Young All Whites World Cup squad named

Young All Whites coach Aaron McFarland has named a squad he says has the mental toughness and versatility to get out of their group at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico next month.

May 29, 2011

AUCKLAND Young All Whites coach Aaron McFarland has named a squad he says has the mental toughness and versatility to get out of their group at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico next month.

McFarland has named a squad of 21 players with five new faces from the group which secured qualification for the 24-nation age group finals by winning the OFC U-17 Championship in January.

Goalkeeper Liam Anderson, midfielder Stephen Carmichael and forwards James Debenham and Dylan Stansfield make the squad after staking successful claims during a tour to Doha in March while Jesse Edge and Harley Tahau, uncapped at age group level, are the squads bolters.

The Young All Whites have set their sights on at least matching the class of 2009s second round appearance and McFarland believes his players have the mental toughness to get enough points from its pool games against Uzbekistan, Czech Republic and USA.

They are an ambitious group and among them they are some relatively seasoned campaigners for 16 and 17 year olds, McFarland said.

Weve got a good core of players who have played in the ASB Premiership or in the Phoenix A side so theres a probably a bigger group with exposure at that level than weve had in the past.

McFarland says his side will need to be tactically nimble, employing different game plans at different stages in matches.

"Weve got a mixture of ball players and some dynamic, physical players in both midfield and up front that means we can play the way we need to at certain times of the game and manage the demands of the heat and altitude."

The bulk of the group led the team through qualifying but theres some that have played their way into the squad and just add to our options.

The Young All Whites depart for Mexico on June 10 with their first game against Uzbekistan on June 19.

When we play it will be 10 behind the ball at all times. Formation will go out the window.

Did her son make it... i'd hope no (cause to much friction) but it would be hard to justify not picking him if he was good enough because of what she did.

I think friction is the least of what she was trying to cause ;)

I would not necessarily say Declan is stranger than his old man because that would be nearly impossible but he definitely more dangerous!!!!!! Green Grass2011-06-04 22:27:50

Doesn't appear so at this stage .... NZ's first game is 8am NZT next Monday and there's nothing about the game on the on-screen guide at the moment.

I'm sure if you type the words: "seventeen, mexico, web stream"  into Google you'll find something.

NASCAR, Golf and Indy Car racing are all live at that time of the game, guess there is zero chance if the game being on.

Is this age group feeding through to the 20 WC that we are holding, or is it the group below these guys?

It will probably be a mix JD. Although some of this batch will be ineligible for 2015.

LATEST FROM SKY ON COVERAGE: SEEMS POSSIBLE AT THIS STAGE.
(Maybe Sky are too tight when it come sto spending money on football to fork out for the rights from FIFA. Makes you wonder how much FIFA would charge a small market like NZ for the rights?)
