Agree, Paston was amazing in both games. Without him, I doubt that we would have qualified for the World Cup, and without him in the Italy and Paraguay games we would have lost, without a doubt.

2-2 last time they played as well and that was with New Zealand including most of the players you are rubbishing.
Was at the game and Wales was lucky to draw. Half of our boys were amateur then too. Wales might have quality but I watched them get taken to the cleaners back in August by Aussie who didn't even get out of second gear in Cardiff. Only cost �5 to go but wasn't a briliant game to watch.
We would be a lot higher then this if we managed to play every window like Australia does. When did the AWs last play? I cant even remember it was so long ago!

The last game was the 3-0 loss to Australia in Adelaide on June 5 which was off the back of the 3-0 loss to Mexico on June 1.
The only other game this year was the 1-1 draw with China on March 25.

Note that we're actually ranked 120th EQUAL with Namibia- and that's a rare distinction, to be ranked equal with another country in FIFA's convoluted system! (Same points- couldn't be separated...)
What's done us in is St Kitts and Nevis' (pop.53,000: smallest country in the Americas) amazing form over their CONCACAF neighbours in the past year to leap over us into 117th place: W:2 D:5 L:1 including a recent 0-0 draw with Canada.
Also the Faroes (pop. 50,000) have leapt above us into 118th spot on the sole strength of a 2-0 win over Estonia last June (worth millions of points in FIFA's esoteric calculation system) in an otherwise dismal habitual run from Aug.2010 of:
W:1 D:1 L:8
Congo beat a country with a name longer and more difficult than New Zealand's that even fewer people internationally have heard of- "Sao Tome e Principe" as well as Swaziland (also obscure) and so got millions of extra points to make number 119.
Alas, Namibia beat African whipping boys Djibouti twice 4-0 in a week, convincing FIFA the "Brave Warriors" must be as good as the more prestigious teams in Africa who regularly thrash Djibouti, though not famous enough to be ranked higher.

Just checked out how FIFA actually calculate World Rankings. See:
"The basic logic of these calculations is simple: any team that does well in world football wins points which enable it to climb the world ranking.
A team�s total number of points over a four-year period is determined by adding:
� the average number of points gained from matches during the past 12 months;
and
� the average number of points gained from matches older than 12 months (depreciates yearly).
Calculation of points for a single match
The number of points that can be won in a match depends on the following factors:
� Was the match won or drawn? (M)
� How important was the match (ranging from a friendly match to a FIFA World Cup� match)? (I)
� How strong was the opposing team in terms of ranking position and the confederation to which they belong? (T and C)
These factors are brought together in the following formula to ascertain the total number of points (P).
P = M x I x T x C
The following criteria apply to the calculation of points:
M: Points for match result
Teams gain 3 points for a victory, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a defeat. In a penalty shoot-out, the winning team gains 2 points and the losing team gains 1 point.
I: Importance of match
Friendly match (including small competitions): I = 1.0
FIFA World Cup� qualifier or confederation-level qualifier: I = 2.5
Confederation-level final competition or FIFA Confederations Cup: I = 3.0
FIFA World Cup� final competition: I = 4.0
T: Strength of opposing team
The strength of the opponents is based on the formula: 200 � the ranking position of the opponents
As an exception to this formula, the team at the top of the ranking is always assigned the value 200 and the teams ranked 150th and below are assigned a minimum value of 50. The ranking position is taken from the opponents� ranking in the most recently published FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.
C: Strength of confederation
When calculating matches between teams from different confederations, the mean value of the confederations to which the two competing teams belong is used. The strength of a confederation is calculated on the basis of the number of victories by that confederation at the last three FIFA World Cup� competitions (see following page). Their values are as follows:

The rating doesn't really reflect how compeditive we are, it reflects our lack of matches due to our location.

We haven't had a great run of results either, 5 losses and 5 draws since our last win - Serbia before the WC. Including the win against Bahrain in Nov '09 we have had only 2 wins in 14 games.
Still, most of those games have been against decent opposition with Honduras and China the lowest ranked (currently both in the top 70)
I expect a bit of a leap in our ranking after June
Dunno if this has been brought up before but there's an alternative ranking system which uses a different approach called ELO (not to be confused with Electric Light Orchestra). Info on how it works here.

Hmm, I think that overrates us a bit. Canada, too.
I dunno, Bahrain and Slovakia are both there and we beat one of those by a single goal over 2 legs, and drew with the other. Bahrain also knocked Saudi Arabia out of the Asian qualifying for the WC last time too. I think a full strength AWs side against most of those sides would be close match, whereas we should dominate the teams around us in the FIFA rankings.

Actually, it's probably fairer to say that some of those teams are underrated (probably Austria, Slovakia, Finland, maybe Morocco and Gabon too). The others are probably there or thereabouts in terms of overall quality.
Fair call. Still, I think this ranking system is overall a fairer reflection of the comparative strength of teams than the official FIFA one. Interestingly, the FIFA women's rankings use the ELO system but the men's don't.
