The Fifa World Rankings for men are due out today. Bummer that our win against Mexico wont count.

The Women's rankings are due out 12th March. We should improve on that.
See the Cyprus Cup Thread in this section for current standings of the teams that are in Cyprus

That's a more interesting statistic, than 1st in Oceania.

Cheers for the summary Uiron.

If we build it, they will come...

north korea down to 102, they are in the group of death at the world cup and the TAB still has them twice as likely as us to win the World Cup. boooo

i dont understand why this has been dubbed the group of death? theres only two traditional WC strongholds, the 4th best african nation, and the only nation not in the top 100.

ok, group of death isnt the right description bc north korea is there. but it is the most difficult group from which to progress if you are the 4th ranked side in it.

What?

Exactly what i said. If they didnt have Drogba there would be little mention of them. And based on Africas constant disappointment at the world cup, i just dont see them being that much of a threat to Brazil or Portugal. Maybe if Egypt were in there instead, and either Australia or Japan in place of DPR. Then you could call it the group of death.

Brazil and Portugal to advance, with ease.

Oh. My. God.

A side with Drogba, the Toure brothers, Salomon Kalou, Didier Zokora, Bakari Kone, Romaric, Emmanuel Eboue, Guy Demel is not a threat to Brazil and Portugal (who, by the way, aren't all that these days)in the first ever World Cup held in Africa?

I don't really like backing up something that Aged13 has said, but to be fair he has a point.

Ivory Coast were really, really bad in the ACN (in the 2 games that I saw them, which didn't include the game they went out in), and apparently have massive political problems in the camp.

They have no chance of making it out of the group (caveat - unless they appoint Hiidinck as coach).

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

He doesn't have a point - traditionally, African sides don't play with a lot of intensity in the ANC in World Cup years, which is in part the reason why Egypt has been so successful in the ANC in the last few tournaments.

Add into the mix that during the ANC they were under the threat of a similar attack like the Togolese team had been and had to travel to games and training under armed escort to ensure that something like that didn't happen probably meant that football wasn't exactly the foremost thing on their mind.

And further add into the mix that Portugal should be counting their lucky stars they're in the tournament at all, and that they haven't put together a decent performance since the group stages of EURO 2008, and you realise A13 has no idea what he's talking about.

I still dont rate their chances, Portugal and Brazil are still overwhelming favourites. I dont think SA will make things any easier for them just because its closer to home than ever before, and although there was the threat of violence at the ACN, other teams were still able to perform. And keep in mind they recently sacked their manager. History just isnt on their side, and neither am I.

And whats with the personal attacks? You dont even know me.

1. Portugal overwhelming favourites? Those of the glorious 0-0 draw with Albania in Lisbon during the qualifying (just to give one example of their brilliant results in the last 2 years)? But Ivory Coast only made the quarters of a tournament in which their primary concern was to leave the place in one piece, so they should really just not even bother going to the World Cup.

2. Ivory Coast was in the group with Togo, which was played in a province with breakaway rebels in it, and which has no actual physical contact with the Angolan mainland (there's a big chunk of Congo in between the two). The rebels threatened all the 'world stars' coming to the province, with Drogba and Adebayor especially singled out. The rebels obviously tried to live up to the threat with the attack on Togo bus, and the Ivory Coast team spent most of their time during the group stages pretty much absolutely sh*tting themselves every time they had to leave their hotel. Ivory Coast's group was the only one played in this province, all other teams played on the mainland and had no such problems.

3. All African teams will get massive support in South Africa - just as an example, Egypt had tremendous support in Confed Cup last year.

4. I'm not attacking you on a personal level, just expressing doubts into your football knowledge based on some of the posts you've made in the last couple of days. I hope you prove me wrong.

Portugal, in their group, would be favourites. TAnd the Coast had equally unconvincing results (1-1 with 119th ranked Botswana, 0-0 with 157th ranked Madagascar - teams you would back the AWs to beat easily). Its hard for me to favour them over the 6th ranked side in the world. Africa are long overdue for a decent performance in a WC, which could suggest a decent performance is near... so I may have given Coast a chance at the round of 16 if they were in another group. We'll have to just wait and see.

So in one case you argue rankings are the be all and end all when comparing teams and in the other you disagree? Interesting.
