Sure is, it tells four current players you might have been good enough to win the league for us but by the way you're average and we don't want you. Brilliant.

Not that I'm against it, this has been a long time coming and so good for the game in the Sth Island, we really need to see the best players playing. Good work DTech. I'm sure other clubs will respond in kind.

Ronaldknow....  In my opinion it is extremely disappointing that the Irish boys have chosen to do this and that Football South as their employer has allowed.

Lets start off by saying the boys seem really nice guys and Tech are doing an impressive job this season. I wish Tech all the best for the combined league!

Football South has employed the Irish boys as FDO's for the last two seasons, positions that are not available to local's or kiwi's. It would be fair to say they have been employed to provide players for Southern United Mens Team. (the three other SU teams are run on a voluntary basis with local players only)

They have chosen not to play in the FS premier competition in the last two seasons. It would have been good if they had made themselves available to play for clubs this season rather than pick choose.

I would like to wish them the best but I cant, once they go Football in the south may not have improved and all the Irish experiment has done is fund OE's.

Oh, wow didn't know that. Not a new technique though as quite a few clubs in ChCh do the same with Clapham at Cashmere, Kelly at Halswell and Hoyle at Nomads. I guess clubs should do what they can to lift the level. I've just been to the Cashmere v Coastal Chatham Cup game and man it was awesome to see such a high calibre game with so many young players on the pitch so I'm in favour of clubs bringing in players if it raises the standard of the game as witnessed today. Looking forward to the league and the best the Otago teams can bring but agree it's tough on the local lads, hopefully they knuckle down on go on to prove that they are better and worthy of consideration. Also hope the Irish lads show the respect this decision deserves and go out and show why they are in the team.

Normally the PDO 's play for the clubs they work at in Christchurch. A good formula started at Coastal, we also have Mainland employees picking and choosing their winter clubs, so good luck DT for your initiative and bring it on. Better players, hopefully better football.

By the sounds of things the reason the Irish boys didn't play winter league last year was because they were after a break following the season at SU, as before that they had come straight from playing football in Ireland. I imagine this season was reasonably similar, all SU players are encouraged to have a break before committing to a SPL club - makes sense to wait to see who actually qualifies rather than have to transfer mid season from a club. All in all, it raises the standard at an already decent looking Tech side. I'm sure Southland and Queenstown are busy strengthening too - I know Ridden is from down south so don't be surprised to see him turning out for them this coming Sunday.

Wow, that is one crazy-arse draw with dates, times and locations all over the place.

I especially look forward to the midnight game between Coastal and Nomads.

We will have probably won the league by then anyways so may not need to play it. :-)

It was originally down for the 1st of September at Cuthberts. This makes sense as they will fly in and out on the same day, perhaps it got missed when they were entering the games.

Maybe they are moving to a weekend set down as a chatham cup weekend since both are not in that competition??

I'm just telling you what most, if not all National League sides tell their players going into the winter season. Players do choose to get straight back into it but many take what is offered, as i'm sure you would do too.

Yep same happens here in Mainland, the players are asked to stand down for the a few weeks at least.

It's not just the 14 games, it's usually the fact that they have played a whole winter season before those games, and they are training at least twice a week. Even EPL players get a month off before restarting

Well done on drawing the line at the date that is most convenient. I think a break is justified. Not ideal in terms of improving the quality of the top football in the region but understandable.

March 2016 - Oct 2016 = Irish League (33 games)
Oct 2016 - March 2017 = NZ League (14)

Oct 2017 - March 2018 = NZ League (14)

Also looking forward to the Southern League, back after almost two decades.

Who knows what the decision, to cancel the old Southern League has meant for football in the South Island?

Clearly it has not helped, judging by the number of southern players selected in national age group teams in recent years and results on the national stage - Chatham Cup, Super Club, ISPS Handa League etc.

At the time the 'cost' of the league was a one of the main reasons for many of the Christchurch club sited to exit what was a very compeititive league, with officials from clubs stating that the money 'saved' would be used for player development and ground development. Sadly in most cases this never happen, with many club happy to tread water.

Over the years I have always stated that it is up to the South Island clubs to work together to raise the bar as the North Island clubs are not worried about us and there is more than a good case to say the same about NZ Football.

Here is to the 'new' Southern Football League, hopefully it can grow into quality, cost effective competition, which will growth players and officials and hopefully bring in new sponsership leading to a full league in the not to distant future.

Yup, it'll be great if people get behind it, and for some sponsorship to make it more club-friendly.

The selfish side of me is happy with a 2 round MPL and a one round SPL, as it means I get to see my team every week pretty much.

I am conscious of the fact that in order to get buy-in from fans and non-fans, we have to do a better job of promoting it. A business will want to see a return for its money. Will be interesting to see how many clubs/federations report on the games via twitter/fb/whatever, plus some post match reports. I don't see many on the clubs websites or social media. The MPL has been pretty poor this year from clubs, Gavin Searle still does a great job but you know, get volunteers to do the work when there's enough paid people around.

I mean look at this week for example. Nothing on Mainland's website previewing the league, just a copy from the SPL. Meanwhile Football South produce this quality document. And the league starts tomorrow!

I hope for better when the games kick off tomorrow. I see that Bet365 don't have options so I can't keep up with scores that way either.

Football South have been producing this programme for a number of years, mainly thanks to the good work by Rab Smith with the editorship now in the hands of Morgan Jarvis, with clubs providing information weekly.

Technical dominated but did not take their chances and Rovers got their goal against the run of play, even their coach turned once they scored and said we really don't deserve to be in front.

Great day of football yesterday, got to see 2 games.

The first one was a cracker between Tech and Queenstown. The visitors under the pump for most of the game however managed to score on the counter three times. Clapham was simply too good weaving his way through players and just being able to dink and shoot with amazing accuracy. The Nomads Bays game was a bit of a let down to be honest but at least it was football in the sun.

Hoping for lots of updates from up north for the big match this arvo.

Looking at the Nelson Suburbs squad list that both Bertie Fish and Matt Tod-Smith must both be back from the OE so strenghten their squad.

I will do my best. Ben Wright birthday today so Suburbs will be out to give him a present.

So will Coastal ?
