PSV will be up against BATE Borisov in the play-off for the Champions League over the next couple of weeks, first game in Belarus next Wednesday. Will be interesting to see if Thomas makes the squad.

He should do, has had a whole preseason with Pec and has started training with PSV.

He's only been officially unveiled overnight, they may not want to rush him in.

If he takes the field against BATE then I believe he would be the first Kiwi to play Champions League since Chris Killen for Celtic in 2007/08.

Rufer is the only other Kiwi who immediately comes to mind to have played Champions League, but surely there are others...

In recent(ish) times we've had Wood (Birmingham & Burnley) and Nelsen (Blackburn) play UEFA/Europa league.

Really looking forward to keep following Ryan's journey at the moment. Potential to do big things for PSV!

Pretty sure that Danny Hay got a couple of minutes off the bench for Leeds, maybe against Barcelona? Don't think that any other Kiwi has appeared in that competition.

Although not sure if Thomas' potential appearance/s against BATE will be classed as Champions League appearances, seeing as UEFA classes it as a play-off, rather than the competition proper. Otherwise then you can start counting players like Draper as having made appearances, and I'm not sure that that's quite right.

Of course, if PSV get past BATE, you'd expect Thomas to get some actual and decent playing time in the Champions League.

Yep, Danny Hay's Leeds debut was a CL match at the Nou Camp when he came on as a sub. ESPN commentator Tommy Smyth then proceeded to constantly call him Danny Mills...

Thank you Ryan for having been instrumental in PEC Zwolle’s famous and clinical 5-1 rout over Ajax in the cup final of 2014, ensuring the biggest Dutch Cup shock of all time.

You will be remembered as one of the best midfielders and versatile players that has come forward in our colours. And I have been watching PEC Zwolle home and away from 1961onwards.

Please anticipate a rapturous reception when you come to visit us with PSV this season in Zwolle. Good luck at reigning Dutch champions PSV in Europe!.

I have always enjoyed your contribution here, it’s been very inteiguing watching Ryan’s journey and it of course helps to get some insight from a fan like yourself. Thanks for all the updates and I hope PEC benefit somwhet from the sale, to help achieve some success in the future. Hopefully a PSV supporter can fill the void! Thanks and don’t be a stranger!

He was unavailable due to a knock at training. PSV very lucky not to concede 5-6 goals in that game. Quite a miracle they came away with the win. All is not right at PSV, albeit early in the season they have not looked as sharp and consistent as last season. Ryan will still need to fight for his place but if things don’t get better ASAP his chances of playing regularly increase.

Yeah, a great result for them - a win, and three away goals. But they didn't look all that great, don't see them doing much in the Champions League. I said in another thread that the Dutch league is in a bit of rut, not sure what the reasons for it are, but if PSV and Ajax don't have good European campaigns this season things could get even uglier.

You’re right el g, Dutch football as a whole is at a low point and everyone here is well aware of it. Seems difficult to pin point why exactly but it seems it needs a shake up. I read some comments from Willem II fans when they signed McGarry and Woud. There was a general theme along the lines of ‘signing young players from other countries is a glaring sign of the sad state of Dutch football’. No doubt the two kiwis are great talents and NZ is on the up in development terms but I agree with them that maybe it’s an easier league to crack now. Those contracts would have been Dutch kids 10-15 years ago, maybe even more recently.

or another team recognised that he was a better footballer than any one of Burns, Ridenton, Lia, Parkhouse, Doyle, Cacace and Galloway. The Nix awful record in the last few seasons doesn't really indicate that they were any good at talent spotting and/or selecting the right players

Huge setback PSV newcomer Thomas: 'I'm out of it for a long time'

PSV can not appeal to newcomer Ryan Thomas for several months. The 23-year old midfielder recently came from PEC Zwolle and has now suffered a serious knee injury during a training session. "It seemed an innocent thing, but I'm out of it for a long time."

'During the inspection you have to undergo for a transfer, I have been completely screened, everything looked good,' explains Thomas on the club site. 'When I blocked a ball on the training, I suffered this injury. At first it did not seem serious, but we have had a scan made for safety. And it did not look good. "

Thomas is waiting for a long rehabilitation, but is militant. 'It is not fun, but this also belongs to the life of a top athlete. In the coming days we will look at the best plan and then I will get to work. '

The chance that PSV will attract a new midfielder seems to have increased due to Thomas's injury. This is partly due to the status of Bart Ramselaar, who sat in the stands on Tuesday against BATE Borisov and possibly still leaves.

Ryan Thomas looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. You’ve presumably been reading details in the press. Today, it has been suggested he’d be out for six to nine months.

As I previously anticipated, Ryan Thomas will have his rapturous reception in Zwolle on Saturday 25th August 2018 when the domestic champions PSV are coming to town. A warm and appreciative ' get-well' has been scheduled in the 30th minute, coinciding with his squad numbers at PEC Zwolle and PSV.

It’s a shame really a gesture has been engineered, captured and orchestrated by a group of supporters who feel they are bigger than the club and have manoeuvred themselves in a position to dictate terrace emotions. The kind of robotic nono’s and bloated bokito’s who’d hush the crowd for applauding too early to their liking; it’s nothing short of moral hijacking. He would have spontaneously received his accolades at any rate in the first place.

Criticasters, galloping on their hobbyhorse in the pundit and talk shows merry-go-round, feeding on juicy quotes, speculated Ryan Thomas injured himself in training, too eager to prove them wrong and PSV right. Thomas has been labeled by supporters and mainstream media as an ‘excuse of a contingency signing ‘ and as 'a lightweight substitute back-up bargain'  for the void left by the failed transfer of long-held prospect Mexican Erick Gutierrez. PSV cannot afford him.

Diabolical irony dictates that the unlucky Thomas incident occurred on the immaculately maintained surface of purpose-cultivated natural grass PSV are renowned for. PEC Zwolle have been the whipping boys of the Dutch top flight for years and years, exploiting what has been grotesquely classified as ‘ injury-prone semi-hybrid artificial turf, larded with tiny rubber particles’.

If PSV qualifies for the first proper stage of the 2018/19 European Champions League, it would generate €35mio as an entry bonus; enough to snatch Erck Gutierrrez from the natural green, green grass at home in Mexico as a stand-in for Ryan Thomas. Ooh, the diabolical and twisted irony.

Ryan Thomas’ character dictates that he and his knee will come out stronger out of this recovery period, although I will always have my concern about his fragile physique, regardless of his visits to gyms.

Saturday 25th August 2018. Football’s coming home…

With respect to you PECZwolle and the club, the kuntsgras has to go. I know there’s discussions/actions in place with the KNVB to phase it out but I think it’s crazy that a top European league had allowed it in the first place. To me it cheapens the competition. The clubs (apart from the big 3) seem to undervalue good grass surfaces. It’s not cheap, I get that but artificial pitches are not what they are/were perceived to be. Great for lower level football don’t get me wrong, but it has no place in professional football.

I don’t buy into the notion that kuntsgras doesn’t cause more injuries than natural grass. That’s a whole different debate but it’s a relevant one in the industry. Going a long way off topic with this rant but in relation to Ryan’s injury - without knowing more details I won’t be drawing any assumptions.

Maybe the KNVB need to do more to ensure the clubs have the resources/knowledge to maintain natural grass pitches to a high standard. I believe this is the root of the problem (and it’s their problem).

The game ended 2-1 to PSV but PEC dominated the whole second half, a bit wasteful with chances of which they had plenty to PSV’s few. PSV scored in the final minute of added time to save their blushes once again. PSV went completely off the boil second half while PEC looked like a totally different side to the one that grinded out a 0-2 loss away to Utrecht last week.

Yeah, they signed him basically as soon as CL was secured. Before that the club basically couldn’t afford him. A lot of fans were of the opinion that Ryan was the cheap option while they were all hoping for Gutierrez. He is close with current PSV star Lozano so they’re likely to form a good combination. It’s a real shame for Ryan but now they have their man, the fans will be quietly happy. No doubt Ryan still adds value when he’s fit though, just might be a lot less game time than at PEC.

'PSV-debuut weer een stapje dichterbij voor Thomas door voorspoedige revalidatie'

19 December 2018

'Maiden PSV performance one small step closer for Thomas as a result of a prosperous revalidation'

Ryan Thomas can make his debut for PSV during the second half of the 2018/19 season, as the Eindhovens Dagblad from 19/12/2018 announces.

‘The midfielder from New Zealand came over from PEC Zwolle this summer, but almost immediately tore off his cruciate ligament. Because of that injury, which he sustained four months ago, Ryan Thomas did not yet get to play in an official match for the Eindhoven team. The rehabilitation period for a cruciate ligament injury is six to nine months, according to the Eindhovens Dagblad. Ryan Thomas is on schedule.

There is still no concrete date for the return on the pitch of Ryan Thomas, but the newspaper indicates ‘it is going in the right direction’

As part of his rehabilitation, Ryan Thomas received a number of tips from olympic swimming champion Pieter van den Hoogenband, who helped him during his exercises and sessions in the pool.

Mark van Bommel: “The Australia internationals Aziz Behich and Trent Sainsbury will join up with the senior squad after the weekend, while long-term absentee Ryan Thomas has embarked on his first running sessions.”

Hey alright, that’s what we love to hear! Back into the ol’ running stuff and that means he should only be a couple months away from a full return. One more milestone ticked off. Thommo was initially hurt in August and a cruciate ligament tends to take nine months to recover, longer if things go awry but it’s been so far so good for Thomas to hit that nine month schedule. Which would mean he’s cutting it fine to get out there before this season comes to an end but he’ll be all good for a full preseason at the least.

As for the club without him, absolutely no dramas there. PSV just beat Fortuna Sittard 5-0 at home, with Luuk de Jong scoring a hattrick, and that puts them five points clear at the top after 20 games. 18 wins in those 20, with 1 draw and 1 defeat. Champions League is basically a certainty again sitting 16 points clear of third place with 14 games to play.
