I wouldn't want Brown back and I don't want Lia now.
Brown was ok at times and his goals made up for his disappearing the rest of the time.
Lia is simply not good enough and I don't really care if he's slightly better than last season when he was woeful.

Manny at the back as the dedicated sweeping DM. Hicks and Rufer helping out defensively, but both, or one rotating somewhat higher.

More defensively it's 4231 or with one of Rufer and Hicks dropping deeper and Kenny also dropping from the front line. So you'd have a lot of rotation with Hicks and Rufer alternating getting forward, the fullbacks getting forward for width, and Kenny dropping when needed in midfield.
Or play the same players as a 4312, with the FBs pushing forward for more width. Hicks, Manny, Rufer making the three. And when you need goals it pushes to a 4132 and FBs again overlapping for width.
Very flexible set of players, provided Rufer and/or Hicks can do enough defensive work between them, and that Kenny also can play deeper when needed and contribute defensively.
