Interesting for those who were around when the RoF was built to know: how bad is the damage? I.e. was the stadium well designed for earthquakes?

Structurally, it's fine. There is basically cosmetic damage (broken pipes, small bits of liquefaction, etc.) that needs to be repaired. This just takes time (about two weeks they say).

The stadium is well designed for earthquakes. With modern engineering, there are two standards: a functionality standard (so after a 'small' earthquake, it's relatively simple to repair -- this earthquake fits into this category) and a 'don't kill people' standard, with no regard for functionality afterwards. Older buildings typically only have one point of failure, and that point is catastrophic. A good example is the two houses in the south island - the homestead that collapsed was built using old techniques, so when it failed, it failed with fatal consequences. Compare this to that house that was shunted 10m because it was on the faultline. It's a write-off, but the person inside survived, and it's still standing (it's actually more complicated than this, but it's the basic idea).

Obviously not designed and built by those who built the center port buildings .Sounds like its bloody lucky they struck at the time they did or things could have very different.Going to need to be some serious questions asked due to how new those buildings  are and that its the 2nd time know that they have had issues after a major jolt.

Not surprised there are some issues.Given how it shook around for the small one just before the squad game dont think i would have wanted to in there for that one.

Anyone know how long it will take for them to find a new date for the game?

Dont really care when they reschedule it.More concerned about where they reschedule it.

In March there is a split round because of ACL commitments for teams. They can move 1 game and fit the rescheduled game in there, so its strange they mention Jan/Feb as a possible date.

Working on that at the moment, an update will come through later this afternoon/evening hopefully

Not sure what people are thinking, but happy to help out if there is want for one for the round in Hamilton v CCM

Are any players over 20 allowed in the team? Could several first-team players be playing for the Reserves this weekend? I know that's what I do in Football Manager when my seniors don't have a match.

Not Sure on rules on over age players this year but Italiano has been in goal for them.

Nix are using that split round to try to get international window game moved out of the window.

Westpac Stadium seems well-designed and lets hope it really is up to the stresses that are going to be placed by a really major quake in the future.

My feeling is that we can learn a lot from other countries that are earthquake-prone (California, Japan, Chile etc.) but we haven't been doing this much. For example Chile is well ahead of us in terms of sports stadium design for earthquake preparedness. A much bigger quake of 8.3 hit Chile on September 16 2015 and yet the FIFA u-17 World Cup went ahead from October 17 at venues close to the epicentre such as Coquimbo and Vina del Mar which had also been hit by major tsunamis.

A certain amount of skepticism about the earthquake safety of modern NZ buildings is healthy - without living in fear (most modern public buildings and commercial premises stood up very well in the Canterbury quakes  i.e. they didn't collapse and the people inside escaped even if the buildings were often not repairable). The collapse of the CTV and Pyne Gould Guinness buildings in Christchurch, which were declared safe after construction and after the September 2010 quake and numerous aftershocks, raises many questions about the building standards even of structures built from the 1980's on and reliability of engineering assessments in this country.

The problem is that there are a number of public buildings and commercial premises in Wellington, including many built since the 1960's, that are known to be dangerous or else have not yet been discovered to be dangerous. There are hundreds of buildings on the Wellington City Council's list of "Earthquake Prone Buildings" here  - and this is only in the central city, not the suburbs (and little is being done to remedy the situation it seems):

http://wellington.govt.nz/~/media/services/rates-a...

Major structural failures as have occurred this week to the Statistics NZ Building ( eleven years old) and 61 Molesworth St should not be happening after what was in fact only a mild quake. What will happen when eventually there is a really large quake centred close to or under Wellington city?

Evidently basic stuff like demolishing unreinforced brick chimneys has not been carried out in Wellington  - a basic lesson to learn from the Canterbury quakes. Pretty much all unreinforced brick chimneys will collapse in a major quake either inwards or outwards. Put pressure on your council to remove all unreinforced brick chimneys city-wide and replace yours if you own a house that has one.

I agree with that.  My house was less than than one km from the Feb 2011 ChCh quake epicentre and it faced the "wrong" way (it was at a right angle to the oncoming seismic wave).. The house was a complete write-off (walls on all four sides essentially collapsed and the slab was a mess) but the roof was intact except for the brick chimney which luckily fell into the empty garage.  None of us was injured and we were able to sleep there for another few nights before moving in with friends; the house was demolished since but the ruin stood proud until demolition.

Heh, booked tickets from Auckland to Wellington for the November game that got rescheduled. Yesterday I booked tickets from the 12th to the 16th to do 12 Pubs. Seems like the Nix are trying to avoid me, might have to call Air NZ and see what the damage will be to stay a day or two longer so I can catch two games while I'm down.

Phoenix worked with the stadium, Melbourne Victory and Football Federation Australia to find a new fixture date that suited all parties
- See more at: http://www.wellingtonphoenix.com/article/phoenix-...

I guess fans aren't regarded as a member of "all parties".

Exposes the lack of an 'official' channel of communication to the Phoenix fans

I'd expect it to be later in the season such as mid-week March 7/8th or on weekend March 12th/13th rather than just after most people's holidays and return to work/school
(Not sure if that's already booked for cup/international fixtures or rugby)

See I'd expect it to be in the school holiday because you would probably get a few more fans in the door than on a normal school night.

See I'd expect fixtures on 1st, 14th, & 21st to satisfy the demand from the  'school holiday' crowd. Four home fixtures in three weeks is not going to stimulate a big crowd for a Tue night match

it'll just be a $50 fee to change your flight, plus you'll need to make up the different in flight costs. $50 to see the Nix play another game? Worth it.

Nix pushing hard to get Jets game in March international window moved to that March 12 weekend.

Sounds like they almost had it locked in when the earthquake hit, and the need to reschedule this complicated things.

Playing a game without our team being decimated by the All Whites is probably more important than leaving a bigger gap after people got back from their holidays.

Probably a higher crowd than if it was in February for example. And it's given a chance for the Phoenix to pump their Jan Membership more because you get the 4 game free now.

FFA said that they didn't like teams having played different games. Which indicates they want this game to be played asap. Given all that, having it during the holidays is the only real option.

The whole situation isn't ideal, but it's been thrown at us. No matter what date was picked it would have been shark. This is probably the less sharky.

No date would please everyone but I like this one. I'm having to miss the next 3 "home" games. The next two because I can't justify the expense of trips away the 2 weekends before Xmas when I'm already going away over Xmas time for family etc (and went to Auckland for Coldplay last weekend) and then the one on the 1st because I'm not back in Wellington yet. Having also missed the last home game played due to another commitment that night, we'll only have been to 2 games in the first half of the season. So getting another game when we're back from from the holidays in January suits us.
