well done! Good to see your support through thick and thin. This year feels special as good as that season when Ifill was on fire and even Vukovich scored!

Still 2/3 teams better than us right now.

Perth and Sydney maybe Adelaide....but up there. Sydney will easily win regular season but play offs could be very interesting

Try following the Fox Sport coverage. Both half time and now post match the only, and I mean only thing they have talked about is how poor WSW have been. Not one single positive comment about the Nix except that the result was deserved.

Comment on Libby's goal from Slater: it was a goalkeeping mistake!

I like Pine and Fred but jesus sometimes I wish they would just commentate the game

they talk irrelevant bollocks from wo to go, don't know how you can listen to them.

I've just finished watching it on a ferry between Krabi and Phuket. Find a stream with no Aussie or Kiwi commentary, Bliss.

Also damn Thailand has awesome 4G. No way could I have watched that in Europe or Australasia on a boat at sea.

p.s. thanks to all those nix fans who called into the Duke of Wellington on the way home and let our 2 year old grand kids run riot and not not spill what the result was. Massive respect to your discretion and tolerance
We had a great afternoon re inforced with a great home win!

So far it's been a good season for you.

A few seasons ago the drive to and from Masterton for every home game was rough when we consistently sucked so your hike is nothing short or brilliant.

it has indeed and loving every minute of it, it is like the days of old when we made the playoffs for a few years in a row and every time you came to the stadium you were expecting points out of the game and most of the time those points came, it may not have been pretty football but it was still football and the crowds were good but not great until the playoff matches came round then crowds really took off and seeing 30,000+ watching a phoenix game was a real thing and the atmosphere was something else. good times.

FTBL review

Wellington Phoenix equalled their club record nine matches unbeaten as they continued their impressive recent form with a 2-0 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.

The first half was dominated by the men in yellow, their passing crisper and more menacing, with Wanderers ponderous when they did get the ball.

The little master Ulises Davila - by far the standout player on the field - deservedly opened the scoring after hitting the post with a similar effort moments before.

Gary Hooper expertly laid off the ball to him on the edge of the Wanderers box and the attacker did the rest, taking a quick look up before unleashing a driven shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

Wanderers, to their credit, did their utmost to find a way back into the game.

Mitchell Duke came close on three separate occasions, with powerful shots that unfortunately couldn't find their target.

Phoenix sealed the three points in the later stages, however, when the excellent Liberato Cacace drove forward from left back, jinked into the box past Dylan McCowan and nestled his shot past the scrambling Daniel Lopar.

Given their earlier struggles, this win remarkably brings Phoenix into third spot in the A-League table, just one point behind Melbourne City.

They next face Brisbane Roar and who would currently count against them finding another victory there?

As for the woeful Wanderers, Markus Babbel is a man under massive pressure.

They occupy eighth position, a mere five points from last spot, and things don't get any easier next weekend when the in-form Perth Glory come to visit them in Sydney.

WELLINGTON PHOENIX

Stefan Marinovic - 6

Was steady in the home goal and was rarely troubled by Wanderers in truth.

Tim Payne - 6

Enjoyed a good battle with Duke down his right hand side of the pitch. A solid defender.

Luke DeVere - 5.5

Had a few tense moments when Wanderers appealed for penalty calls but he escaped unscathed.

Steven Taylor - 6.5

Led by example as always and ensured the Wanderers attack were restricted to little space.

Liberato Cacace - 7.5

A delight when moving forward with the ball from defence. His speed and movement were too much in the leadup to his goal.

Matti Steinmann - 6

A steady operator at the base of midfield. Calmly offered the ball to the more expressive players in front of him to do the damage in attack.

Cameron Devlin - 6

Similar to his partner Steinmann. Kept it simple in possession and put in several robust tackles to limit Wanderers momentum.

Ulises Davila - 8.5

What a talent. The Wanderers defence couldn’t handle his dribbling, his movement, and his creativity. Took his goal well.

Jaushua Sotirio - 6

An able diminutive partner to the more lethal Davila but not as much came off for him.

Callum McCowatt - 7

Had a strong game down the left in attack. Always ran at his man and never shied away from possession.

Gary Hooper - 7

Tired in the second half as he finds maximum fitness but was a class act in the first half. His link up play with Davila was a joy to behold.

Substitutes

Te Atawhai Hudson-Wihongi - 4.5

No time to show what he’s got.

Sam Sutton - 5.5

Through himself into proceedings with appreciative gusto. Not afraid to make some tough challenges.

Ben Waine - 4.5

Similar to Hudson-Wihongi. More opportunities will come.

think the comments are ok, but the ratings are very harsh on some of the team - could easily add a point to de vere, Steinman, Devlin, Taylor and Payne

Gary Hooper is seriously still unfit.

Not sure I agree with that, I think people are just not used to watching a proper centre forward operate. I've watched Wood play enough times in the Prem to know that workrate and fitness aren't entirely correlated to how many touches a forward has or how influential they are on the game. What matters is goals (and possibly assists) and he's still got respectable stats with this in mind.

To back up my point, around the 60 minute mark Hooper made a clearing header from a WSW corner around the 6 yard box. Long story short, the ball ended up with the Wanderers keeper in his own box not long after, and it was Hooper who had made the run to close down the keeper and start the press. Seriously unfit players don't make 90 metre runs at that stage of the game.

You’re 100% right, I had a close look at him during the game and his little touches, flicks, passes and positioning were spot on. You could just tell he was a proper striker with EPL status. Just the little things he does are valuable.

He's a lot better than some import strikers from England that have graced the A League. Thinking of the one that played for Adelaide ? not Heskey, but of similar looks and build.

Agree as well with the others.  This is exactly what I meant earlier when posting about Sotirio who relies on speed for his effectiveness but needs someone like Ball who also runs quite a bit but has a better footballing brain.  Hooper does not hare about the field yet someone like Davila is a perfect foil for him (excellent vision and positioning, much like Hooper).

7yo: I'm making a sign for the game. How do you spell phoenix? I know it starts with p-h but is it e after that?

Me: No, it's a little bit unusual. Have a guess.

7yo: i?

Me: No

7yo: o?

Me: Yes good one! What next?

7yo: Hmmm I don't know, it's weird

Me: It's actually an e after that, it is a tricky one.

7yo: So it goes p-h-o-e?

Me: Yep that's it... oh and of course nix after that bit

Result:

No she didn't take this sign, she's a bit of a perfectionist so when I informed her of the error there was no way she was being caught dead with it. She ran out of time to make a replacement as well, so we went sign-less. She was badgering me all the way there to buy her a flag, I was like maybe maybe, we got there and whaddaya know, free flags. Blimmin stoked. She's got hers hanging out her bedroom window now for the street to see.

The kids loved it. Younger ones lost interest by halftime when our food ran out, but the 7yo was well into it, and she was not happy we were so far from the YF to be able to hear all the words, aside from the obvious basic chants. She was all over the match programme, reading about the players, and I was quite chuffed with myself as I told her to watch Davila because he is really good and scores a lot, and also told her to watch Cacace as he is my favourite player. Of course they both scored and she thinks I'm some kind of oracle now, so I'm letting her run with that.

Now she wants to get back, and she wants to be in the yellow fever zone. We've earmarked Feb 15 to do just that. I think I might take her up the back of Aisle 21 so she can hear the chants loud and clear, and also watch the YF going bananas without having to turn around and miss the game.

So all in all, fairy tale performance from my perspective really. Thanks to the Phoenix for delivering, thanks to the Yellow Fever for delivering, we've now recruited another youngster to our cult.

Although we didn't get the results, from what I remember we outplayed Sydney in the first game and, but for a horrendous miss by Davila, could have beaten them the 2nd time we played them. I'd probably agree that Sydney are better, but not by that much and I'd be reasonably confident in playing them these days.

Geez some of those people are absolutely deranged.

Well done to Valeo and others fighting the good fight in there, but man, might be easier just to leave them to their cesspit.

Can't believe people are so angry about our existence. And then to claim that we detract from Australian football development just for being in the league, when we've massively helped the careers of so many Australian coaches and players, including better exposure for young *australian* players than most of their own clubs, I mean wow.

Rudan definitely played a massive part in restoring the club identity and culture, and the benefits of that have been left behind.

Nothing else was left behind though, except some snake droppings here and there.
