Dream team to play Nix exhibition game

Terry S is keen to get a big name team over here to play the Phoenix in an exhibition game (read here), following the success of the Galaxy game in 2007. EPL teams are in his sighst for what would no doubt be a sell out game.

So who would your dream opposition for the Phoenix in an exhibition game be?

Mine would be Blackburn. They're not my EPL team, but it would be great for Nelsen, who I believe does not receive enough praise over here for what he has achieved.

Burnley!!

Seriously, from a financial point of view for Terry surely Chelsea, Arsenal or Man U or City would be his first choices?

I wouldn't mind seeing Messi and Barcelona.

I'd have been all for a game vs Olympiacos.  Might not have broken even/made a profit but I'd have certainly enjoyed it and we all know Terry is happy to fork out hundreds of thousands of dollars to satisfy one fan. loyalgunner2010-04-04 18:58:38

I suppose seeing I said dream team, I suppose I'd love to see one of the big four, Real Madrid or Barca over here. But I'd love to see Nelsen run out against us just as much, before he plays for us in a few year's time!

Am I the only one who thinks bring them (whoever it is) here for 10 days, play a friendly in each of the three major centres in NZ against the Phoenix.  Depending on the team I think each place would easily manage 20 000 and even after all the travelling expenses that would make a lot more money than a one-off at a 35 000 seater stadium.

And of course a game against the oceania all star (maybe ORC's turn this time?).

Would love to see Everton (sell-out for sure) or Hull City (not so sure). Everton have been here (1987 I think) so would love to see them again.

Its no longer a problem.

be interesting to see a Prem team, but unless it were the Tigers (and that is a tad unlikely I'd rather go to another play-offs match (and final) at the RoF next season

I think after the last games we had at the ROF, if you marketed this EPL team right, it could really be anyone and it would sell out.
As long as you attracted the fans from the playoffs.

That said, Barca would rock my socks. I would make a tribute shirt with half nix and half Barca with a fadeout down the middle with the stripes. YES Please!!

Wow, they exist!
Might have to start a stupidest football team names thread! My vote: BSC Young Boys.

I reckon any relatively big name team would sell out.

From a completely impartial perspective, Arsenal.

But I doubt it would be one of the 'big' PL teams tbh.

everton or blackburn lets be realistic the top 4 teams have those pre season tourny's.

I would think that a good size crowd turns up more to see a name player, than a team.

Arizona All Stars (or whatever they were called) didn't bring in the crowds a couple of years back, it was David Beckham.

So shouldn't the thinking be, who is the most talked-about player and which team does he play for; then invite them over .... and money only changes hands if the name player turns up and plays.

And the idea of exhibition matches in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland is a good one - there did seem an element of rivalry creeping in when Christchurch managed to get a better turn-out for the Phoenix than Wellington (. ....and Horus can have a field day running a competitive TIX thread for the 3 matches )

Somebody has made the pointed out already, look at the LA game, I think there was a sizeable number of that crowd who have never been to a football game before, or have been since (including the finals) because of the David Beckham factor. Netball mums, girls etc

Reality is probably any other team outside the EPL big 4 would struggle to sell out.

Realistically..we would be looking at a team out of the top level of the EPL. They tend to tour Asia where they have a huge following. More likely to be a Fulham or Everton or Blackburn. WE would probably have to tie it in with games in Australia to make it worth while for the team to come out.

Still, its a bloody good idea....I'm sure fans would come from all over the country for a game against a EPL side. Plus the media would get into as well.

So how would the Nix go?...well it would depend on how serious the EPL side was. I would expect they would trial lots of their youngsters who would be keen to make an impression. A 1-2 loss  would probably be OK

Maybe we could get West Ham...the Nix might be able to beat them.
