I agree. I think that your 4 import slots should be used for players that are 'first names on the sheet' players. Greenacre (and I don't say this is as a knock against him or his talent and work ethic) is by default because we have no other strikers. If the Phoenix are looking for a gun import striker, then as a 4th option, he can't be retained if they want Sanchez as well. I would say for imports, if you take the Ifill and Sanchez as two spots, you are looking for a cracking striker and a RB. That frees up Manny into his stated preferred DM rol and give Brown and Lia a little more room to use their skills away from that DM role they get tagged with but is not suited. That gives you cover and flexibility.
I think its easier to find a replacement for Manny in the midfield, than it is to find a replacement right back. He might not like it, but it is better for the team to have him at RB.

Judging by what the club said when signing Smith up for rest of the season, I think he would be the replacement for Manny in the midfield.

Ifill, Sanchez should be 2 of the imports for next season, Smith maybe the 3rd. That leaves us 1 spot for a striker.

I do not think Smith is a '1st choice pick me' player. He's got to the end of the season to show it but he is not a stand out for me like Ifill, Durante, Muscat.

Unfortunately I tend to agree. Would have thought Paul Reid would be a good option at DM  for us next season possibly?

Phoenix players off contract at the end of the season:

Mark Paston, Chris Greenacre, Vince Lia, Dani Sanchez, Tony Warner, Daniel, Nick Ward, Niko Tsattalios, Brent Griffiths, Cameron Lindsay

On the books for 2012-2013:

Andrew Durante, Paul Ifill, Manny Muscat, Ben SigmUnd, Tony Lochhead, Jimmy Downey, Tim Brown, Leo Bertos, Lucas Pantelis, Mirjan Pavlovic

Siggy's quote from this article on radio sport today http://www.radiosport.co.nz/news/spsoc/1088453641-Phoenix-stumble-in-Gosford

Stand in Wellington Phoenix skipper Ben SigmUnd has pulled no punches in his assessment of his team's performance in the 2-nil loss to Central Coast in Gosford.

SigmUnd says his side was lucky to go into halftime locked up at nil-all and probably deserved to lose the match by a lot more than two goals.

He says if they don't start showing up and playing for each other, they may not be playing at all next season.

SigmUnd says if they don't start putting their hands up, they might have to find something else to do at the end of the season.

Bolded ones I'd keep.
I'm on the fence for the others except Nick Ward.  Griffiths was ok yesterday.

Its easy to say 'dump this person, that person', but is there anyone available that is better? Imports you can go out and spend money to get someone better, but with squad players, the fact they have to be Aussies or Kiwi's shrinks the pool massively.

It's an interesting one. There are players that I would want re-signed for certain as they are important first XI players like me. There are others that I would not be so concerned about signing again, as they only get game time when there are injuries and suspensions, but I wouldn't mind if they were signed again (Griffiths and Tsats fall into this category). And then there are players that I don't want to be re-signed, either because they would use up an import slot or for other reasons.

He was one of the few good players last night so he wouldn't have to worry even if he didn't have a contract.

I've spent most of the day turning the post above into a little web app (mostly for fun, but it might be useful too).

I've written in all the data in and I think it looks alright. I've saved whether they are a foreign/ youth player also. It's far from finished but good enough to release.

http://bit.ly/nixcontracts

I have some TODO's:
  • Sorting (i.e sort by contract end date)
  • Filtering (show only foreign, players over 30 etc)

And yes, I know it's total overkill. But like I said, I did it for fun :)arnies2012-04-01 01:10:09

I like Lia, Smith, Sanchez.

However there are better players out there and I wouldnt be bothered if all three were dropped and we found upgrades. However I expect 2 out of the 3 to stay, and with Browny leaving, I feel Smith now has the inside running. He is versatile and consistent.

Why would we possibly want to keep Brent Griffiths?

Lets just get a youth option in.

Would be good to drop Daniel he hasn't been a top performer when he made it to the field.
He ahs to be the laziest one on the team.

Alex Smith would be a good one to keep, the team changes and picks up thier game when he is on the field. The middle of the park is completely empty when he is on the bench. Lia and brown seem to hide on the outter edges, allowing the opposition clear runs through the middle.
All the other player ahve given 100% and we should be happy that they stuck with the team through everything.

You mean apart from the 5 games around Christmas where he started and was clearly our best player?

Yep, other than that, when he hasn't been playing its as if he isn't on the field at all. Spends the entire game sitting down on the bench. How lazy is that!?

I agree, I think Daniel has been real hard done by this year.
He offers something that no-one else can, and thats regular penetrating passes and crosses.
He offers balance that Sanchez in that position doesnt.
We have always looked balanced when Smith is in the midfield as well.

They would both be right in the mix in my squad.

I'm gutted about Daniel. I hope he takes the unsatisfactory offer we put on the table.
I feel like we're forcing him into retirement early.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/6696490/Paston-has-fingers-crossed-for-Phoenix-contract

The veteran goalkeeper is off contract at the end of the A-League finals and despite Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert indicating he would like Paston to extend his stay in Wellington, an offer has yet to arrive.

"I haven't had anything put in front of me so it's hard to say `yay' or `nay' to something that's not there yet," said Paston in Sydney where the Phoenix are preparing for Saturday's minor semifinal against the Glory in Perth.

"It would be fair to say the clock's ticking on that one. I've got a family to look after and at some point in the next week and a half I've got to make a decision in the best interests of them. I'm enjoying it in Wellington but it obviously needs to be right for both parties."

I've no idea but apparently not enough to want to check out playing in Indonesia or Thailand or Singapore or where ever he went.

It was reported earlier in the year that he was on more than Iffil which doesn't seem right. Without actually knowing the amount I'm not sure we can really say it is unsatisfactory or not. I'm OK with him staying but don't think he will too difficult to replace either.

Didn't TonyP come on here and douse those rumors?
I thought he came on here and categorically denied that Daniels wage under Seripesos was astronomically high as postulated by the Dom post.
I say unsatisfactory because apparently it is. If it were satisfactory I can only assume he would have taken it...
