Just came back in this thread to see the Dan Carlin love. So glad you guys have had a crack and you're enjoying it.
I'm nearly ready to go back and listen to that again, it was just so amazing.
It wasn't just the listening hours for me either. Every night after smashing it in the car for my commute, I would look up stuff online and go down rabbit-holes about war time personalities, or more details of the battles etc, it really got me so so interested in the history of WW1.
Also, perhaps a minor spoiler alert, but when he talks in one episode about the ANZACs in Turkey, I must admit I felt my heart swell with pride. I think the quote was something like "Most historians agree, that the best, bravest of all the soldiers in WW1, were the British forces, and in particular the Australians and New Zealanders".
I'm no fan of war in this way usually, but after listening through hours of him talking about the bravery, honour, comradery, and what is required to fight in those battles, to hear him say that about kiwis, made me feel immensely proud of our ancestors, and I get a different feeling now when I drive past the RSA monument in Paraparaumu every morning and afternoon. Much respect. So much respect.
