What's your favourite podcast?

Best football podcast IMO is the Football Ramble.  Have loved their Tournament work.  Of course if you don't have any interest in English/British/European football then its probably not for you.  But they are funny as fudge and knowledgable to boot

The Empire podcast.. if you are into films. Or even if you aren't.

Arsenal wise, The Tuesday Club with Alan Davies, DJ Tayo et al. Sporadic but brilliant. 

Non-football, real-crime stuff like Serial (seasons 1 and 2) and Untold: The Daniel Morgan Murder

For non football stuff, 'The Generation Why' Pod is good, they talk about crimes, mysteries etc. A few weeks ago they covered the David Bain case...

what apps are people using for their podcasts? im using a simple one called 'podcast'. its ok, but it seems to get things very slowly. are there any people would recommend?

DoggCatcher, it's a paid one but I've had it for years and never felt the need to change.

I've used podkicker for years.  There is a free version but the paid version was only a few bucks.

I use pocketcasts which seems to work well, paid for but only a ocuple of bucks.  I'm a fan of Planet Money, kind of off beat with a focus on financial stuff but presented in an interesting accessible way

Anyone listen to black hands? I thought it was great.

To be completley honest, Phoenix City is my favourite podcast

I have just picked up two new podcasts. the first is the totally football show. With some familiar voices from the old guardian football podcast. its pretty good and the new guest they get in are quite interesting. They also do a english league football one which sounds mildly interesting...

the second is Unburnable, a podcast following a court case against the Norwegian government. Very informative and emotive. The outcome of the case will have ramifications for most oil/coal producing nations.

I get my US politics fix by listening  to a few from the Crooked Media stable out of America: Pod Save America, Lovett or Leave It and Pod Save the World. They've launched a couple more but I find them a bit preachy. Also the FiveThirtyEight pod is a good listen. West Wing Weekly is excellent if you loved the show, The West Wing. Hosted by Josh Malina who played Will Bailey. They've interviewed almost all of the cast now (Stockard Channing the main exception) and have worked through the first 4 and a half seasons. They talk about an episode a week.

ESPN are up to a second series of 30 for 30 pods, some really good episodes and some dud ones. 

S-Town was good for a half the series then just fizzled out, I really didn't get how all that went. Black Hands was excellent, it even got quite big in the UK and a lot of my workmates were listening to it. I've just started, well it's sitting there for me to listen to, this series called Slow Burn which is about Watergate.

Football wise I listen to the big three that have been discussed on here, Football Weekly, The Football Ramble and the Totally Show. Impressed with the Totally Show in how they've been able to stay pretty true to what worked with FW but have mixed it up because they can access a wider network of guests.

I'm probably going to unsubscribe from the Crooked Media podcasts, I'm pretty sick of US politics now and they've gotten to that phase that all podcasts get when they grow into a "network" where they pretty much fall into in jokes and spend half their time interviewing hosts from other podcasts and talking about what's happening elsewhere in the network. It becomes a thing where there main job is to get people to subscribe to the other podcasts and it gets annoying.

Never the fever one as the presenters ain't attractive enough

Revolutions is a fantastic podcast. I finished the Haitian revolution yesterday, which I thought would be the least interesting but it was much more dramatic than the rest of the revolutions he's talked about (I listened out of order).

I thought History of Rome was kinda dry and plodding, but I only tried the earliest episodes.

Big fan of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. I just prefer the longer formats to get a real picture of what a person is saying.

Also for a shorter listen, RadioLab is excellent. Varied topics, often science-based, with a cultural twist, almost always mindblowingly interesting. Sometimes they get a bit preachish with their far left agenda but that's rare enough not to phase me.

These two podcasts are for people who just have a weird interest in pretty much anything to be honest. They cover such a wide range.

Also someone mentioned Serial. I was totally gripped by series 1, that was really good. Series 2 was interesting in a different way, but still good. 

I use "Podbean" on my android phone to download and listen. It was honestly the first one someone suggested I try and I've never tried anything else, seems to work fine. 

I stopped listening to season 2 of serial.

Back on the crooked media podcasts after a break. Also some of the giblet ones are pretty good, although I'm sick of the NPR faux hesitation™

New favourites are The Walk and Alex Hornes Horne Section podcast. Both very good and the latter is hilarious. 

Apart from the Awesome Fever ones which are presented by amazing people ;-P

Oh yea, this is AMAZING. 

Loved his WW1 series, I was gripped, start to finish. The man has a serious talent at putting these podcasts together. 

In fact calling them podcasts probably isn't quite right, the series ones are more like documentary series. He is so good with his delivery, and I love the way he cites research and sources - he is careful to tell you what is accepted as fact and what is disputed, and he gives good background on different historians as he goes.

Thanks for the recommendation.  Can only do back to "Show 50"  which appears to be the first from the WW1 series mentioned above.  I'll give that a shot.  3+ hours is pretty epic for a pod

Okay, so in a couple of days I've gotten through several hours of the ww1 series, as you said it's griping

Yeah it's amazing - and how nice is it when you have the whole series to binge? When you're up to speed unfortunately you have to wait several weeks before a new podcast is released (not even sure he's still producing them actually).

He released one 24 days ago, so based on his history it's a few months until the next one.

With the level of detail and the clarity of explanation I'm not surprised they don't come out often.  The research must take forever let alone writing it up.  Would love to see what was before Show 50

Joey Barton (that one) has just started a new series called the edge where he interviews successful people from the world of sport and business.

Despite his reputation, the interviews are excellent. Best so far have been Sean Dyche, Gary Neville and Clive Woodward
