Slight change of tack - did anyone play Close Combat?

One of the more enjoyable computer games that was pretty close to actual mucking round with airfix 1/72 troops, rolling lots of die and consulting damage tables etc.

The sound effects were pretty cool too - like how Commando comics would have sounded in real life (or if they had been made into a computer game).

If you guys are on tonight Id be happy to run a training room to help you improve your accuracy firing at moving tanks

Just been ready some arty strat guides and realised I was doing things wrong, will check out the SU26 and then hopefully later on in the week see u around.

Basically the key seems to not stay so static.

Not played them but still making them by the looks, started in 1996 and the last one made last year?

Are you playing WOT's yet Junior? Stupidly addictive game. It's gone straight into the top ten of all time fav games and is rising fast. Even if you are a bit crap like me it's still plenty of fun.

Have been very tempted but so far resisted it.  A bit too much else happening at the moment to attend to and my "recreational time sink" is still FIFA 13.

Last CC I played was Invasion of Normandy.  Amusingly as a young nerd I assembled a legion of WW2 Germans (or Jerry as they werr known) but now as a middle-aged nerd I tend to play the Allies (or Yanks/Britscher Pigdogs), yet politically I am more tory now as opposed to my rebellious "up the workers" yoof.

There must be reference to 10,000 spoons in there somewhere.

I don't know.  I got smashed by a 'Tank Girl <something or other>' in a pink and blue T18 while tootling around Tier 2 the other day.

Tier 2 at this time of day is suprisingly competitive whereas in the evening I can usually pick up 3 or 4 kills a battle if I don't do anything stupid.

Yes apparently so: http://nzgamer.com/pc/reviews/1828/close-combat-panthers-in-the-fog.html

Like the reviewer I played the first one and the Russian Front and I then went away from it for whatever reason.

"If you have any interest in strategy games based on WW2, then I urge you to get this game. I might add this has been a hard game to score, particularly when in reality this game does not break any new ground but rather adds gloss to what is already a successful series.

Casual gamers may rate it in the lower sixes however, if you are a mad keen WW2 strategy gamer, then you will understand the score I have given it."

The reviewer's score was 8

I've never seen the movie (just a scene or two briefly).  My interest is now piqued, but my data cap and evening time available are over 80% used up.

Tonight.  War in the East.  Should I launch the Leningrad scenario one more time (normal difficulty)?  Or the Army Group South scenario?  Barbarossa is too mental.

I think you are vulnerable on either front.

1.  Your mechanised forces will be bogged down by mud at various stages

2. Your opponents will either draw you into urban warfare which you are ill-equipped to deal with and will take a long time or

3. They will draw you into battles where you have to attack across muddy fields flanked by two dense woods.  As you advance their longbows will wreck havoc on your front armoured mounts and you will then have to negotiate a serios of sharpened wooden stakes before, weary, reaching fresh enemy troops who spare no mercy.  This will change the face of armed confrontation for a long time and demonstrate that you shouldn't rely on un-manoeuvrable  mounted units or heavy, long-ranged crossbows but which have a slow reload rate.

Me in my Churchill.

Doesn't explain my SU-76 as that has paper instead of armour and I'm spectacularly poor in it.

I showed Mrs. News the footage of you ramming his corpse the other day on Fjords when we were calling you commie scum.

You're of his Xmas card list.

I might have to dig up the replay of that sea of vermin running straight at us from the spawn down that road last night.  Hilarious.

17 turn scenario.  Army Group South - with no support from Guderian.  They have to do everything on their own.  The (fateful) 6th Army to drive on Kiev.  1st Panzer Group to meet up with the 11th Army based in Romania.  17th Army to take care of the "pocket".  Drive eastwards, forever eastwards.

PS: Downloading WOT to see what the fuss is all about.

hi- add tmunkee to your contact list
These 2 links have a wealth of information - Id suggest,if you can afford it, getting a camo net and binoculars -you can swap these from tank to tank without payment. Its probably not worth spending anything on a t2-3-4 tank unless its a keeper - i think the camo net is 100-200k cant remeber-most useful equipment is about 500k -if yr tank is akeeper, a rammer is a good choice -10% faster load time.

User : Siggy.

Have a number of nets and a couple of binocs just so if I'm running two tanks in a tier (like my tier 2s when platooning with Junior News) I don't have to remember to shift them.  I permanently leave them on the T40 so I never go into battle without it.  Also forked out for a 100% crew on that as well - have to keep up with dbart.

Only tank I have bought with Gold was my Churchill.

Currently have:

Tier II - M2 Light, T18, T57 (will probably get out of this as I've decided artillery isn't my thing)

Tier III - Marder, SU-76

Tier IV - Hetzer (105 - Comedy gold), T40

Tier V - Churchill V (The Russian one). Wolverine (forgot I had this)

I also sometimes play as Junior News in Tier I and II.  He's got a good crew in a BT-2 and has just got a BT-7 which we put a 75% crew in.  He has no extra equipment. I've been using his to get to grips with scouting, either in the charge at a million miles an hour way or sneak in and light things up way.

My weekend mission is to grind the SU-76 which is doing my head in to get to a T34.

Also -I learnt the hard way -patience is good! All stock tanks are rubbish - dont judge a tank until youve fully upgraded it - patience also applies to waiting until the aiming reticle has fully closed before firing -and remember-a 50% crew is also terrible -as they get closer to 100% they get a lot faster, accurate etc. Dont be in a hurry to rush to Tier10 - Tier 3-4-5 are where the fun is.

A question for you munk.

How many vehicles can a crew be trained for?  If I moved my T40 crew to the Wolverine and got them to 100% on that, would they retain 100% on the T40 when I move them back?

Best advice from that website dbart:

Be a good player:

1. Always greet other players
2. Quit raging
3. Shoot the red team only and not the green team
4. Push slow but powerful tanks
5. Help tank that got stuck in map physic
6. Always say thanks to people who help u...

PS: Can you just jump in tier 2+???

PSS: Sleep will be a massive issue this weekend,  Masters, plus this...it could be a good one!

No unfortunately - apparently when a crew is moved to another tank, they forget all their training on the old tank -i think its just WGs way of getting us to part with gold

I wish i could have put it as eloquently -
Its polite to ask slow tanks first before pushing them
Parking behind a tank as they peek out to shoot is bad -they cant back into cover - easy to do in city battles
also 555+ is laughing in thai -you see it in chat a lot

Theres 2 ways to get into the higher tier tanks -grind through -it takes time but you learn the ropes along with similar ability players, you can also purchase a premium tank- theres a lot of these through the tiers - however, i wouldnt recommend getting anything too high tiered as getting into a tier 8 battle in your newly purchased T34 heavy tank without any idea of what to do can be embarassing
