Central Coast and Newcastle are both within an easy drive of Sydney (and each other) which gives them 3 teams where they can expect home fixtures against them to have significantly boosted croud figures thanks to travelling fans. What about Perth, with a much bigger population than Wellington and only marginally bigger crouds (even when they were top of the league too)? Anyway, I know it wasn't your intention Peter but I think the issue is that the feeling from most fans is that the constant discussion of disappointing crouds is counterproductive - it changes the narrative from the club doing well because its top of the table to the club doing poorly because it can't attract crouds. And telling the public that not enough people are turning up isn't likely to make people want to come - they're more likely to think there must be a reason that people aren't going and then not go themselves.

Nailed it

And when you have a GM whom keeps threatening to push the nuclear button for the croud that do not turn up, it gets really fudgeing boring, really fudgeing quick. Domes' approach to this has been widely panned across this forum.

When you are dealing with a minority interest sport (in NZ) behind rugby, cricket and league (all of which are going on at the same time I might add) our crouds are bloody decent. How are the Lions and Hurricanes going historically in rugby mad NZ?? THERE is your context. Comparing it with what's going on in NZ not what's going on in Australia. I think you will find a graph that 2nd Best has done that will show you that and we measure up very very well in the Wellington market.

I will be very interested to see how the Hurricanes croud numbers are this season compare to last few now that they are top of the table and unbeaten.

Exactly Yakcall because sporting fans are bandwagoners. If the the product on the field is going well, the fans come. Where are all the Americas Cup fans from not long ago that captured a nation and now no one wants to put money into. That was 18 months ago?

Our biggest croud was right before AFC break with Brockies last game. Then we had a break and went to the Hutt which was unfortunate as crouds may have been larger but they catered to the existing market (and fair enough) and then compete against a CWC final for the 1st game back at Westpac. How would those crouds have been if there was no Hutt and no CWC and AFC break? I bet it would be different.

Good on you for having a go Peter.

Invariably any statistics are flawed and/or lacking context by somebody's measure - as people are viewing/interpreting from different angles. The people you've targetted your article at are not those who are on here and nor will they have the knowledge or understanding of many of those who are... the BWB do now know (or care) the reasons behind our seemingly low croud's, nor do they care the comparisons with other A-league clubs are fundamentally flawed for several reasons (hell, even A-league media commentators "forget" to acknowledge these points) as outlined above.

If your article causes ten people to go from "I might go" to "bugger it, I'm in" then that's bluddy awesome! And if not, good on you for giving it a go - that's more than most of us have done.

COYN!

Nothing wrong with your article Peter, its over to the individual as to whether they agree or not but I don't think it deserved the level of abuse received on here. Some of the people you are dealing with here have heart attacks when someone calls the game soccer....[don't do that whatever you do....]

Must be a Hawkes Bay problem - I thought that the article was a good conversation piece.   Obviously we aren't experts like others on this forum.

Soccer - there, I said it, and I'm not going to the naughty step.

I see there's a new Stuff Nation "assignment":Do the Wellington Phoenix have a future? This is fudgeing poor timing. Just when we reach the finals instead of positive stories Stuff are focussing on the bullshark about our license extension. I hope the FFA realise that there not encouraging positive coverage of the A League and Nix by dragging this out so fudgeing long. Makes me so mad - this shark so easily becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Joe Public doesn't read stories about the club's future being in doubt and then decide he will attend a game, he thinks why bother going to support a team which is doomed anyway.

Inote that "stuff" would not allow comments on this opinion piece. Wonder if they realised much more well informed people would shoot their argument to pieces.

Fair comment. My bitch was more about the editorial slant which Stuff/Fairfax are showing they have by making that "assignment" in the first place.

I probably won't write anything though because I hate the whole concept of Stuff Nation really - the way they try to pass it off as news until you click the link and realise it's basically a letter to the editor. Plus I'm kind of lazy.
