Reid gets none of the ball.  Should be a penalty.

Just got in, what number and position is Reid? Hard to see on the screen a bit. His team is the black colour tops?

In the HT replay, Just saw Reid slip and tumble against the attacker in the box. Was never a penalty, no foul intent but a heartstoppernevertheless. He is wearing 29 and is centre right back.AllWhitebelievr2010-05-14 04:01:08

Wasn't definitely a penalty like I thought at first, but he was no where near the ball and bought the player down.  Could've gone either way.

While there is quality in these teams they make more basic errors than you see in the A-League.  I've seen a whole heap in quick succession.

Was that Sibusiso Zuma who just came on?  I'd wondered where that guy had gone but never had the initiative to bother looking.

Nordsjaelland hit the upright.

Surprised there was no cards than there is, shoving and pulling, quite loose with the ref. They certain go hard, direct dribbling with the ball, more or less time on the ball than normal. Some shocking passing selections, didn't quite expect that.AllWhitebelievr2010-05-14 04:41:20

It was a professional foul, he was playing the player with no intention for the ball.

I know that, but the ball went straight to another attacker and Winston took himself out of the play by doing it.  He gained no advantage from it and was lucky the ref called it back when they could have scored, about 15 seconds later.

So for the first goal Reid jumped into a challenge, missed sort of and was then unable to keep up with the man and they scored.  2nd goal he charged in and the player with the ball passed it just in front of Reid, and another striker ran through and after a few attempted clearances scored.

Based on me seeing him this one game it seems as though he has brain explosions and doesn't think things through rationally, which exposes the rest of the defence.

Not sure that it is that straight forward.

For the first goal, Reid had to tuck inside to get goal side of the player and then that player pulled back at the same time while receiving the ball leaving a space between him and Reid. Since Reid was close by, he was drawn to reach out to the ball being passed to that player just as he tucked in a different direction, so when he couldn't get a foot on it, he was spun around stretched with a dead/inactive leg moment which that player was able to just spin with the ball and move pass him. Just a luck and chance moment that any defender can't do much about it.

The second goal, he was drawn to the player (eventual goal scorer) initially because that was the space/position he was to cover and then he saw and realised that some of his teammates covered that space behind him and he was also the man closest to the ball carrier and so it was up to him to charge and place pressure on the man with the ball, there was no choice in the matter. His teammates let him down by not covering the goal scorer and not him. There was five defenders and two attackers bunched up. But the passer of the ball only just squeezed the ball through, however the goal scorer had even more space to shoot. There is not much you can do, once the man of the ball has total ball control, you can only narrow his options down and hope for a mistake.AllWhitebelievr2010-05-14 06:20:11

From what I see I'm actually quite reasonably satisfied that Reid can do well in our AW set up.

First and foremost, he is a professional and does know how to tough it enough to the letter of the law. You can't say that for half the AW's lineup.

Second, he can get forward well enough and is very useful on the headers in set plays/long throw ins and still get back to the defense, occasionally doing defending in front of the defensive line to stop the counterattck from progressing like an extra defensive midfielder. Which makes sense when it is a long way back to the defensive line after surging forward as an heading option. It shows that he is aware when he has to get into the play quicker and close near space rather than far space.

Thirdly, he does have a decent nose for the ball interception, stopping passes further up into the defensive midfield area from the defensive and breaking down potentially dangerous breakaways/counterattacks before they get a start. This definitely says that his starting point is served best when he is a defender rather than a defensive midfielder because he is able to sneek up and intercept from a longer way out. He might lose his effectiveness at interception if he was positioned more as a defensive midfielder being on the opposition radar early on.

He definitely at his best playing the RCB position. Need to see if he can do RB or be in a three man defense. I somewhat think he can 3 man but RB can be done but not as well as he can intercept centrally that allows him more area to cover whereas at RB it does not give him as much room to intercept. Mmmmm need to see how he does at RB or in 3 man defense. The warm up games are important to assess that.

OMG I randomly met Winston Reid's cousin!

Spent much of a day together before this person took off for a flight to see Winston in Auckland with plans to fly onto Melbourne for the big game!

Winston is rumoured to be very nervous about the game due to the level of expectation! A little bit of nervousness is good - let's hope he doesn't crack under the pressure!

Go Winston!

New Zealand defender Winston Reid is hoping for a chance to prove his talents in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old, who currently plays in the Danish league with FC Midtjylland, impressed in the All Whites' World Cup campaign which ended in the group stages, where they were unbeaten, claiming three draws.

Reid was instrumental for the Kiwis, scoring a last-minute equaliser against Slovakia in their opening game to claim a 1-1 draw and putting in excellent performances against 2006 champions Italy and Paraguay to help Ricki Herbert's team to third place.

Blackburn Rovers boss Sam Allardyce is rumoured to be eyeing a bid for Reid, where he could link up at the heart of defence with international team-mate Ryan Nelsen, who enjoyed an outstanding tournament.

Reid, who moved to Scandinavia at the age of 10, confessed that he was ready for a switch away from Denmark, with the South Africa tournament able to give him a chance to show what he could do.

"One of the reasons I decided to represent New Zealand at the World Cup was to attract more attention," Reid told bt.dk

"I feel ready to try something else than FC Midtjylland."

If the Arsenal rumors are also true then there may be a bit if a bidding war. I wonder if his NZ Junior club has an on-sell clause
