Anyone watching?

HT and 1-0 Spurs (Lamela) who seem to have more a first 11 starting than Bayern.

Another pinch me moment for Singh. Probably his biggest yet. Starting at the Allianz, against some big names of the EPL.

HT Bayern 0:1 Spurs.

Not a top game, Singh had a few shots on goal. Watching with german commentary, She thinks he is the most agile player but not overly impressed with the overall performance of the team. That said, Spurs is not very impressive as well.

Slightly off topic, but this has always bugged me.

In English the city is Munich and the region is Bavaria. In German the city is München and the region is Bayern. Why do we call them Bayern Munich? Why is half in English and half in German? Why isn't it Bavaria Munich or Bayern München?

I think the general convention is not to translate the name of the club, but if needed, to use the name of the place they come from in English. This also explains the Roma/Torino/Milan situation in Italy, and Atletico/Athletic in Spain. The other example I thought of is Red Star, which back in the day was referred to by the English translation outside of Serbia, but these days is referred to as Crvena Zvezda, so the club's actual name, even in English media.

But aren't the city names in Bayern Munich and AC Milan part of the club name, like Roma or Torino or Nurnberg or whatever, so they should be Bayern München and AC Milano?

As far as I remember, Bayern is referred to as just Bayern in Germany. I'm guessing that Munchen was used to distinguish it from other Bayerns around, but since these have fallen away or play pub football these days, it's not really necessary I guess.

AC Milan was founded by English individuals (as a cricket club no less) so that's why the club's name is the English name for the city. Same goes for Genoa. That's in contrast to clubs like Roma, Torino, Napoli, etc that didn't have such founding fathers so their names are the actual Italian names for cities they come from.

A couple of things: Bayern München is on the back of their shirts. Interesting bit about the English names of clubs, like in Argentina - Newell Old Boys, I wonder about teams like Young Boys and Go Ahead Eagles - English names (although not used how English speakers might...) in countries that hav3 their own language.

90 min for Singh. FT 2:2

Spurs win after penalty shootout. Singh converted his penalty. Sensational 2nd half for him, great stuff.

great stuff to see Singh starting and playing the full game for the mighty Bavaria München!

One last point on the English names thing - there's also that elite group of clubs whose names mean something in their own language and something else entirely in English. Deportivo Wanka and Semen Padang, for instance. I'd say both those clubs struggle to keep clean sheets

English names are more common than you'd think in South America - guessing it's probably related to the fact that the game was brought over there by English/British sailors. In addition to Newell's Old Boys, there's River Plate and Arsenal in Argentina, The Strongest, Always Ready, Destroyers, and Sport Boys in Bolivia, Corinthians in Brazil, Everton in Chile, another River Plate in Paraguay, another Sport Boys in Peru, and there's also a whole bunch of them in Uruguay (including yet another River Plate and also Liverpool).

Anyway, this has gone way beyond Sarpreet so I'll stop now.

I've been reading comments over on Bayern's reddit page. Apart from scoring his penalty this morning, their fans were pretty impressed with his performance.

Just seriously wow! Looks like Sapreet has gone from one club with a great young-player development/opportunity system to another. Just perhaps two clubs operating at opposite ends of the professional football spectrum. How encouraging this all is!

If Singh continues to go well at Bayern what are the odds of them continue to look at NZ/the nix for future developing kids? Potential relationship between the two clubs?

Or maybe they will look at Canada first. That was some hit by Davies!

Wow 90 minutes is impressive, especially since it's still pre-season (but close to a cup game).

Had Kovac started Singh to take him off at HT, we'd still be celebrating what an amazing feat he'd achieved, so start a home game for Bayern!
The fact that he played the started and was one of only three players (along with Davies and Pavard), to see out the game means they're taking a proper look at him and I agree, it looks like he's got a serious chance of making the first team.

Let's see what happens on the weekend but how incredible all this is already!

A year with the reserves and then maybe a loan deal to another bundesliga club. It would set him up very well for a career in Europe.

How about just staying where he is and playing in the first team? Lol

Watching the replay right now. He doesn't look out of place at all and has had some nice touches and shots at goal. Really unlucky to not have scored at least a couple of goals in these past few friendlies.

Commentator said that Singh was the stand out of the youngsters for Bayern in the first half. Have also read some overall positive comments from Bayern fans who seem to be encouraged and excited by Singh.

I still think he has a lot of work to do and is a bit raw in some situations but that's to be expected. He definitely has the potential and talent to kick on from here.

I think it is, quite frankly, amazing that he has pretty much not looked out of place. His strength and conditioning would be well behind most of the other players.

Watching the highlights; it looked like it didn't quite come off for him most of the time - a 4 or 5 poor passes, a loopy header, 2 poor attempted shots, one semi decent cross.

so Singh played a full 90 against Harry Kane's team. That should get some Kiwi attention

Sensational was that he played the full 90 min as the only one of the 2nd team, he had a lot of touches and and a few shots on goal. He was clearly one of the outstanding players in the first half. Very positive attitude try to create things. The last 30 min he switched back into the middle and you could see what he is missing when likes of Sanchez. Mueller and Lewandowski where playing, there are just a different class, imagine the chance to play and learn from them. At the end they collected the players for the pen and you could see Kovac walking to him and pinching his check and asked him to take one, Singh smiled and said OK. This is super sensational because the coach trusted him, rewarded him for his work and Singh delivered by converting it.

I think you can’t expect more for his career than the last few weeks. Singh’s learning curve must be exponential. The pundits mentioned  that Kovacs wants a team with top level players and 2-4 young developing players. Singh is clearly on that list for the first team, everything is possible after yesterday. My guess they won’t loan him to another team and keep a close eye on him.

I even saw on twitter someone asking for members for a Singh fan club, the ultimate footballer stardom to have one :-)

Yeah it's developed into an awesome NZ sports, let alone football story.

Really no one can know what will happen from here. Doubt even one of the world's top club football coaching setups, will be fully certain.

To think last year when football in Aotearoa was pretty much dominated by gloomy stories about survival of the Nix etc. Lap it up.

Don't know much about Niko Kovac, but read he is a renowned family man, plus has a blue belt in judo!

Anyway sounds cool that he is looking after Singh. Comes across in this article as well that Singh is feeling the love, which is fuelling his confidence -

Lot of people calling for Singh to start in the Super Cup vs Dortmund, in place of the injured Coman. Think Davies will start as he's the better player right now but incredible that it's even being considered as a remote possibility

I remember when Simon Elliot was bought by Fulham and he looked like one of their better players. At the time I thought he was one of our best players ever but didnt think he would be any good at Fulham, turned out he was superb, shame his injuries ruined it for him. Heres hoping Singh ends up becoming a major player, this makes me sure there are others capable of going further if given the chance.

I watched that press conference. Super important for Singh's development that Kovac stays around, he clearly rates Sarpreet very highly and wants to give him minutes this season. Dunno if he will get on the pitch against dortmund but I think he will be on the bench for sure. Regardless, everything that Kovac has said so far and how Singh has performed indicates that we will see him get at least a few competitive first team minutes this season and I bloody love it

Also said that Singh and Alphonso Davies are much futher developed than the rest of the reserve team players. Bayern have a cup game a few days later against a 3rd or 4th tier team so could be another good chance to make hos competitive first team debut.

In this day and age of inflated and outrageous transfer deals, Bayern have found a diamond in the rough - A talented youngster who sounds like he'll be in, or at least, on the periphery of the first team, and he cost them less than €1,000,000!

It's only the German Supercup, but how good would it be if he won it? Having been mooted for reserve team appearances and further development before being chucked in the first team mix and now he could potentially win a trophy (yeah yeah...) in his first competitive match with the first team.

Who said this football lark was going to be a struggle eh?

Particularly when you consider Bayern paid almost 20 times that amount for Davies (including add-ons).
