Watched this game live, Hapoel are pretty terrible and Stefan isn’t helping his cause by making silly mistakes. There is reports he will leave in the January transfer window

That's only because he isn't very good, and crumbles under the slightest pressure. Aside from that though....

He gets a lot of hate (and threats) on his Instagram page by the fans. I don't know if it's normal Israeli football fan behaviour, or if it's just the club's supporters in particular.

From Flying Kiwis.

https://youtu.be/QZuhRtlKqDw

Here’s someone from outside the British Isles who not only had a game scheduled this past week but even got to play it too. And it was a wee bit of a thriller from Big Stef and the team, Hapoel Tel Aviv coming from two goals down in the last fifteen minutes to draw 3-3 against Hapoel Haifa.

A corner kick set them trailing in the 12th minute. Didn’t win the first contact then nobody picked up the man wide open at the back post who swept in the seconds. HTA settled things down after that but didn’t create anything close to an equaliser... and then in first half stoppage time a fella left a leg dangling out and conceded a penalty. Marinovic dove the wrong way and it was 2-0 at HT.

A better start to the second stanza saw HTA nearly get one back as a cross from the left was turned onto the post (then also wasn’t converted at close range by another fella off the rebound), however two minutes later a similar move from the opposite side was saved and then tapped in from a couple yards out and it was back to 2-1. So naturally they conceded again with twenty to play. Marinovic leapt for a looping ball and failed to reach it to punch away and it was buried at the far post. This was shortly after H.Haifa had been given a red card that was scratched off by the VAR.

But that only set up the cracking finish as a powerful header from an open play cross on 78’ and then a deflected shot from outside the area on 84’ somehow hauled HTA back on even terms. In fact they nearly won it as a fella smashed one off the crossbar in the 86th. Marinovic also made a sneaky low save later on followed by a tougher one parrying over from a hard shot from close and best of all was the one he made rushing out as his defence randomly left a gaping hole for a through ball but Stef took care of that one in the ninth minute of time added on. Could have won it... then almost lost it but for a few goalkeeping highlights at the end there.

That’ll go down well after a pair of cup exits since the Isreali league resumed. Last week they went out of the Israel State Cup with a 1-0 defeat to Hapoel Afula, missing out on a place in the round of sixteen. Marinovic didn’t play that game as the reserve keeper got a rare chance instead. Nor did he play in the Toto Cup Ligat Al semi-final against Hapoel Beer-Sheva the week prior. Also a 3-3 draw with HTA conceding the equaliser in the 96th minute and then having two blokes sent off in the aftermath before losing on penalties.

Judging goalkeepers by goals conceded is a fairly reductive view; they are a last line of defense, not the only one. A goalkeeper can be the best in the world and it won't matter if they get no help from the defense. Sail of course conceded 6 to Melbourne City last year, for example, and he has started every proper All Whites match since.

Whether he starts in a full strength team is up for debate, especially if Talay gets the gig, as you'd imagine he'd favour his guys, but I'd be very surprised if he wasn't picked in squads altogether. The last squad featured two 'keepers who aren't even first choice, in Woud and Paulsen and, since Covid, there's also been Gould (in the English 7th or whatever tier), Searle (third choice in English third tier) and Tzanev (mid-table English fourth tier). Just based on his All Whites appearances in the last 18 months, he'd be at worst second choice for me.

totally agree, but if you look at recent form, losses and goals score has been against big stef in a big way, Sail's performances this season will have had any AW's coach asking questions too. But as there hasn't been one in place he may get away with it.

The bigger picture here is Hapoel Be'er Sheva are one of better teams in the Israeli top flight. 2nd last season, lying 3rd this season.

While Hapoel Tel Aviv have been struggling all season. 4th last but only a point off bottom. We really don't have much idea this far away, what Marinovic's form is like. Almost seems we have a cluster of keepers all about a similar level, especially since Sail's star has dimmed.

I'd like to see Tzanev get a game in the March window. He's had a number of clean sheets lately if at only League Two level. But he is a point of difference almost being a sweeper keeper. Plenty of time over next few years for new AWs coach to have a look at the various GK candidates.

Can’t really recall a time Marinovic has let anyone down when he’s played for the AWs, tbf.
If he’s not making howlers and doesn’t have the yips he should still be in the frame imo. The other guys, Woud aside, are untested at international level.

And I don’t think Sail has been particularly poor either. Rufer back will help imo. I enjoyed watching Paulsen play last season. He smashed that shootout. As a fan I wanna see him play too, but that’s football I guess. That’s been the surprising thing- no one really clamoring for him to get another chance considering how good he was.
