Whose had the better professional career, Wood or Nelsen?
Nelsen, all of his English career was at the top level.

Both have had fantastic careers and it’s fan-f-n-tastic we’re guna be able to discuss this till the cows come home and a bit more.

Wood has been lucky. At Newcastle not a soul was interested in passing to him. I feel like Cooper did a lot of work talking him up and getting him on the radar of Gibbs-White, who is just a wonderful player, as yesterday’s assist showed.

Thought Wood played quite well outside his goal. He almost got an assist or two, as well.

My only disappointment is that the partnership he and Elanga had sparked up for his hatty hasn’t really been renewed yet.

Origi had a better game and it seems that Nuno is hopeful that he, too, might have a run of goals in him. I’m not really sure what to make of Origi as a player. I don’t think he’s ever been highly prolific. Hudson-Odoi rarely looks for Wood, preferring to cut in and shoot.

I think that like Nelsen was, Wood is generally well liked and held in high esteem, and often the refs will listen to him. He also is a fairly unselfish player and usually holds the ball and links well when he drops deeper to collect it. There’s also a bit of a sneer that accompanied Dyche’s Burnley that follows him, especially after Newcastle in certain quarters. He’s answering that this season and no striker is an island!

Where will Wood be playing next season?

I honestly reckon he’d make Manchester United or West Ham better as a rotation striker. But neither fan base would be particularly happy about that you’d think. But he would improve them. Not many other sides he’d gel with tbh. But strikers like Evan Ferguson struggle at Brighton for example. It’s partly their playing style. (Imo De Zerbi is overrated and doesn’t look after his players. I think he should have rested and rotated Mitoma much more, but he just played him into the ground.)

Anyway- Forest are a good watch in this relegation scrap, but you feel like they should have been better than they’ve been this season. Injuries and cohesion, or concentration to avoid late goals the way they did today. If they stay up and rationalise their squad while keeping Gibbs-White they could finish ahead of the likes of Fulham, Bournemouth and other mid table pretenders.

It was a decent enough game this morning. Even Luton looked better than their position suggests. Wolves look absolute crap, even if they were missing a couple of key players.

Where was Wood best at? Burnley, Leeds, WBA, Newcastle, Forest to name a few. I reckon Leeds or Burnley.

Ryan was at Blackburn, Spuds & a little cameo at QPR at the end of his career - Enough to make him a firm fan favourite.

Sorry a bit off topic, but Luton have really looked the goods at times. I watched a great attacking game between them and Newcastle. They’ve been really entertaining, but inconsistent too. I think they lost to Sheffield?
The Premier League is definitely a good watch for many more games this season. There’s a lot of full pace attacking teams playing.

Loved Nellie both as a player, and a bloke. Fiercely determined, inspirational, highly intelligent but forever a Kiwi and kid from ChCh.

But to me Wood is 2nd to only Wynton. Producing tough top defenders is easier than EPL strikers with 63 goals. We've had Winnie after Nelsen, and one of Bindon, Surman, Leuluai could also one day get to that level. But another Wood. Doubt it will happen in my lifetime. In many countries NZ's size or even bigger around the world, he would be easily their no 1 recognised sportsman.

It’s such a team game as well.

My favourite two short videos I’ve seen of late were Henry’s account of Wenger talking to Henry and getting him to think about players on his team, what kind of runs they made  and how they liked to receive the ball. Even a player as gifted as that.

Another was Rooney talking about Sir Alex laying down the law to him and all the other attacking players when Robin Van Persie came in.
“Find him or I won’t play you” he said “Find him and he’ll win us the league.”

Wood’s time at Leeds everything went to him. At Burnley most of his goals were assists from a couple of chaps- McNeil and one other guy. At Newcastle he rarely got good service imo and so he didn’t score much. At Forest he’s started scoring once Gibbs-White and Elanga started to look for his runs. And that last a classic example- a brilliant (no look?) pass from Gibbs-White between the two defenders that Wood tucks away.

Nelsen’s leadership at the World Cup and overall through that period where he flew the flag for a troubled professional game in New Zealand have to be considered. Was he involved in the win against Serbia too? That and the Italy result are surely our best results so far.

I have to say as well for influential All Whites Shane Smeltz and Winston Reid (and Rory I suppose!) had key important inspirational moments that perhaps Wood hasn’t had in White despite the longevity of his career. If he’d landed the winner against Italy, though!

Rufer's achievements would be brilliant in 2024 - back in the late 80s and early 90s they were just unfeasibly good... bear in mind he played in the era of the "2-3 foreigners" rule, meaning you had to be pretty special to be picked up by a team in Germany, Spain or Italy back then.

Not saying Wood and Nelsen haven't been outstanding, because they have, but their careers are in the post-Bosman era, when there's more scope for more players to get a chance in the top leagues.  If British clubs were only allowed to sign two non-Brits, there's a chance these guys may not have had the chances they got.  But all fairly moot, different eras and all - and these three gentlemen easily sit in our top 5 players of all time, imho.

Today I learnt not only did Chris Wood do a stint with Bristol City. But also that Chris Wood did a stint with Bristol City the same year I was living in Bristol. Can't believe I didn't know this at the time and never went to a game.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Still what a player and servant to New Zealand football. Can't believe I had ample opportunity to see the magic live and never took it.

Forest got points deduction under the  financial rules. Looks like a tough call as they covered the $$ with a player sale but it was not recognized by the authorities. The fan forums are going off. Seems like you can ping the little clubs for financial irregularities but not the big boys. Man City has seventy counts of financial illegalities in the system but the authorities never seem to get around to actioning them.
I read in the Guardian that the Owners of City, non other than the United Arab Emirates have been putting pressure on the British Govt. The Emirates does huge business in the UK.
Tough on Wood as Forest are now near the relegation zone.

4 point deduction is harsh, shows how big that Luton equaliser was the other day. Very real danger now.

Still it amazes me that Evertone and Forest get smacked hard with points deductions for a couple of breaches, yet City who are known to have breached hundreds of regulations are still continuing without punishment.

Yeah on the one hand I agree that the rule needs to be enforced, but that applies doubly to City. I think the hearing/trial date for City is locked in to be fair, but until something concrete comes out of that Forest and Everton fans will be feeling pretty aggrieved.

Probably explains the situation a bit better.

Doesn't excuse it mind you, especially if you are a supporter of Everton or Nottingham Forest, but City's time will come.

Of course CFG will throw money at lawyers over this until the cows come home, let alone the appeals of any penalties they incur as a result of the charges. Will be a very long and drawn out process...

Lots of fans will cheer the day that City finally get what’s due to them. Essentially they have cheated the system. Most of their trophies have been won illegally. This club represents just about everything I hate about modern football. For a start they are owned and financed by a country, which gives them huge financial advantages. They also run like some horrible giant corporate ponzi scheme. They own over a dozen clubs around the globe which allows them to cheat the transfer system….essentially by trading players across their franchises.
They have some much power through their owners that I very much doubt they will be bought to justice.

Forest can only be thinking justice delayed is justice denied.

I wonder if we’ll see Chris tonight. Tbh I wouldn’t mind him being fit and scoring tonight.

Forest’s owner is apparently quite eccentric- which is rich speak for as mad as a hatter, among other things- but the club has had a rough run of injuries and the accounting charges seem tough, and potentially to ignore the nature of how transfer windows work.

It seems unfair the way they’re clamping down at the bottom of the table, while issues at the top go unresolved for decades and are undefined and unclear.

I hope they do well in the run in here and stay up.

Forest slowly waking up, but it looks like a hot day and there’s a lot of mistakes being made by both sides. Not much in the way of football yet. Forest have conceded one already.

Edit: still poor at the end of the first half. Palace had another good chance, but Sels saves. Wood hasn’t looked great- losing possession a few times. Gibbs-White not really able to run the attack. Hudson-Odoi had a couple of early dashes without end product, but nothing much of late.  Forest will hope to smarten up and quickly.

Freakn beaut- great ball from Gibbs-White- partners in crime and what a back headed finish. His tenth this season in the PL.

And his 5th time to 10 goals in a season in the Premier League.

I think the goal came moments after Gibbs-White had been moved into the ten. I don’t think their shape with Origi wide is that good, though apparently he’s an expensive squad member.

And perhaps Hudson-Odoi is just missing a bit of footy intelligence. Flicking over and watching Brennan Johnson, Werner, Son… these are guys that are so smart in their link play. They stuck a double marking on Hudson-Odoi so he just ran down the wing, found 3-4 players between him and goal, danced a bit on the ball and turned back. Time and again.

He wasn’t really looking for Wood’s run. Mainly wants to cut onto his right and shoot or cross imo.

Oh well, we’ll see. Two draws. Surely the fans will be getting nervous.

Don’t think Wood had a vintage game. Perhaps his touch was a bit off or he had international break rustiness, but still took his chance well.

Perhaps if Woodsy had been allowed to play for the AWs he wouldn't have been rusty and Forest might have won!

It's a thing of beauty that header in slow mo. He would have to go down as one of the best headers of a ball in the history of the EPL. The stats from memory say as much.

His goals this year are showing his all round quality too. That header this morning was class, volley vs Luton was an excellent finish, and the hat trick at Newcastle was top rank.  He may be in his 30s, but he is still our best player and a critical component of the All Whites line up.  He gives the impression he takes decent care of himself, so no reason he can't keep doing this for a few more seasons yet...

Goes 8th for all time header goals in the EPL (23), going one ahead of Tim Cahill.

Lukaku, Antonio & Carroll will all be in his sights. Maybe even before this season is completed - 8 games left.

If he finished his career 3rd on that list to only Crouch & Kane, that would be quite astonishing. But 11 more headed goals to get to 34, is a big number. Most importantly he's done enough this season you'd think, that even if Forest go down, there will be other EPL clubs keen to sign him for next season.

Cooper got unlucky imo. He rebuilt Woodsy this season, I believe. Got him in much better condition than he’s been, understood his game and talked him up to particularly Gibbs-White who began to respect him and look for his runs. Only paid off big time after he left though. But truly outside Elanga and Gibbs-White I don’t think anyone else really looks for his movement. Hudson-Odoi has one assist and Aurier maybe…

Even in this game there were few triangles and getting players in behind to square for tap ins. I’m not sure about Reyna yet, but he could be handy too.

Big game. Forest (17th on GD, from Luton 18th) host Fulham (12th).
Almost must win, it feels. Forest with a tough run coming up. Spurs (A), Wolves (H), Everton (A) & Man City (H).

Though Luton are away to both Arsenal & Man City in 2 of their next 3 games, so that's a bonus for Forest. Also lucky that Burnley (19th) & Sheffield U (20th) are both pretty shark. Forest should on balance stay up.

From Niche Cache, a 3 min chat with Wood post Palace draw.
https://youtu.be/MyczZE0gUT8

Couple cool stats from this season. What a Kiwi football legend he is.
  • Wood’s average of 0.25 xG per shot is the best in the Premier League.
  • With 0.8 goals per 90 minutes, Wood ranks third in the Prem behind Erling Haaland (0.84) and Alexander Isak (0.84).
