Also something to think about, with regards to the A-League rights. Sky does the TV coverage for NZ based games. If they lost the rights, the A-League would have to bring in an outside broadcasting unit (maybe GGW could finally get a go then).

Can't believe this.  Absolutely devastated.  As much as I like the A-League, the only reason I have Sky are for the EPL and the Tour de France.  Time to get rid.

They mentioned on 3 News that it might be a football channel. Which is all fine and dandy, however will it be broadcast on Sky channels so we can mysky? Will it be freeviewable? How much extra will it cost? Where do I cry?

All the people saying oh well just stream it, it's nowhere near as good. Being able to tape a whole nights worth of football and get up hungover and watch on the couch is one of life's pleasures.

Can't believe this, fuck you Sky and your piece of shit negotiators! God knows there won't be a reduction in premium either. They will come up with some tripe about the quality of the A League blah blah blah. I will conduct a short survey for you Sky: "Would you, dear Sky subscriber who is passionate about football, and has played for over 25 years, rather watch the English Premier League, or the A-League?"...100% will say rather watch EPL you muppets! So don't you fucking dare try and make this OK.

I have SKY for EPL and A - League. That's it. I can't believe this. If this company that bought the rights makes a football channel, will it be broadcast through SKY do you think ?

Am really suprised people will be forced to watch through an internet connection, totally agree with all the posts of the ease or recording through My Sky and having the payment for subscription with the rest of the pay tv setup.

Can't see any reason to keep Sports channels now as we only watch EPL, gave up on the A League long ago.

Although I am sure some people will keep Sky, it will be interesting to see how many people drop their Sports subscription from their package.

Gee I am conisdering even getting rid of Sky and getting a Freeview recorder

I cant understand all the foul language and anger being directed at Sky. Do you think they lost the rights on purpose or are happy that they no longer have the rights?

We have no idea how this is going to play out and yet you'd think we are never gonna see another game of football on TV again the way some people are re-acting to the annoucement on here.

Sit back and wait to see what we are going to be offered before upsetting yourself over nothing.

They must be confident that this new consortium are going to bring a product to NZ screens - the EPL aren't going to continue to deal with these guys if they sell rights onwards and they don't end up on TV.  Talk of this being an online only offering sounds premature to me -f if this is the start of a new soccer channel then perhaps this could end up being a good thing.

Funny that competition in pay TV isn't necessarily a great thing for consumers when things you want to watch get split between channels

Becasuse clearly they were trying to pay as little as possible by bullying the PL for rights. Just like they did with the NRL (only confirming one day before the season). Only this time it has backfired and they lost out. They've made in excess of 100m profit each year for the last couple of years so there is no way they should get out bid.

Gotta say, this is a big deal.  If the new guys get La Liga, I am gone from Sky. I always wondered why we had a Rugby Channel. Aging, white, baby-boomers, like me, watching games from the 1960's/70's/80's is not the future. Jeez, I am old enough to remember Ian Kilpatrick actually playing, but I don't want to pay to see these games  on TV - when the haka was a bunch of pakehas waving their arms about.   Yeah I know, that's not very often, but still.  Why don't we had a Football Channel?  That is a much better bet and the absence of such a channel on SkyTV speaks volumes about their view of the world. Milk the crowd while you can.  Meanwhile the rest of the world embraces football and SkyTV has a rugby channel, but no football channel.  And now SkyTV has been out-bid by some crowd who are not doubt in it for the money but at least see there is a dollar or two to be made from catering for the football crowd.  History is on their side, and SkyTV's failure to adequately  acknowledge that football is actually played by more Kiwi's than rugby is coming home to oost.

so I'll have to watch the EPL on my 15inch computer screen instead of the 42inch telly? Fail, no way I'm gonna pay/subscribe to get a worse deal than I did with sky. Of course it will also mean I'll probably cut sky altogether if I can't any decent footy on telly.

Spot on Sunset. Sky has seriously misread this. Really basic business decision. Whoever is giving them advice about current future trends has no effing idea.

Medium to long term this could be great for sports in NZ. If there are multiple providers that means more content and points of competitive difference.

Short term, it's going to mean punters like me will have to keep Sky (World Cup, Phoenix, etc) AND shell out for this alternate service.

I reckon there must be a chance that Sky will still try to buy at least a subset of rights. Assuming they're not just being bloody minded about it, they must have some budget for EPL games and be prepared to spend that to get games that they want.

Yeah looking at what MP and Silva have bought it's rights to every single game live, presumably the same thing has been bought by Colleseum

This company https://www.business.govt.nz/companies/app/ui/pages/companies/3869656/shareholdings is the only shareholder in the one i posted earlier. and this one looks like it's 50% owned by cooper capital partners, so it looks like that's where the money's coming from.

Cooper and Company this looks like cooper capital partners. founded by Peter Cooper

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/8810945/Sky-loses-rights-to-English-Premier-League/

One of the founders of Sky Television looks to have returned to haunt the network after stealing the lucrative English Premier League football rights from the Kiwi pay television giant.

American-based Kiwi entrepreneur Craig Heatley is believed to have teamed up with another prominent New Zealand businessman to form an alternative sporting channel to Sky Television.

The company, called 818, is understood to have been successful in securing the English football which is regarded by Sky as premium content and critical to the network's sporting menu.
