Don't understand this post either. TW Youth was a mix of Ole players and non Ole players (about 50:50 from memory), so half had never experienced Ole coaching. Weren't Youth coaches one of the other Ole coaches and someone from Miramar?. So it was like any rep team - a bunch of players coming together for a coupe of months under coaches they hardly knew.

^This.

The results were LLWWDWWWL

The first two whilst they were trying to settle in and the last one when IIRC they rotated the starting team knowing they couldn't win the competition.

One of those W was a 1-7 hiding of Hamilton up there too.

SKY Sport and NZF requirements being met.  Think I saw frame for media box in the 15-1 cap 1 photo

wasn't it $30k per team hence the entry went up from $65k to $95k - NZF didn't put any of their own money in, it was the clubs that paid it

TW paid the same yet didn't get a single home game televised, and it seemed Auckland had a lot of games televised.

At least TW got on TV a bit even if it was away games, Southern United got on TV 3 times and had to pay the same!

Sky and NZF were up front when they started the TV coverage, saying it would initially be focused on Auckland but they have learnt -things - like games at QBE don't work, thursday night games were silly and after the semi final debacle they should get some TW hoime games this season on TV

Actually TW did get a home game - when they hammered Hamilton Wanderers 5-2 after being 2-0 down - it was played at Newtown though not Davey F

I'd be genuinely curious to understand what outside broadcast costs for a single match, and why it makes sense to pay sky for the right to then show it on tv, rather than get placed on a platform with wider reach be it FTA tv or directly out via youtube?

I had to sound repitious (as i have mentioned this before), but i really don't understand what the point of the National League is.  Yes, i've read the Strategic plan, and it seems to suggest that the plan is for the NL to develop the market to make the league sustainable.

http://www.nzfootball.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/201...

It still strikes me that

  • There is no obvious link between the senior version of the national league and improved national team outcomes, if its existance encourage pokies money being spent on 25 yr old + foreign players
  • Spending money on building an audience on a distribution platform that is looking tired, has a declining customer base,  and with a rocky future is not a good use of current funds, if you're trying to build a market.
  • You don't build sustainability out of pokies funding, which is a form of funding base likely at the whim of government policy of the day.

I promise i will shut up about this now, especially if someone can make a coherent argument about the reasons that mandate the NL's existance.

Why does Junior Football exist, heavily supported by parents and pokie money is a matching question.

Fair question, but I would suggest a pay to play model is more substainable, and with under 24 year Olds there is always the chance of development compensation from professional clubs, something that is missing from foreign players over that age in the national league.

The National League is our main chance for Club World Championships. It is an aspiration (goal) for youth who do not make the "Professional/US College grade.  Footballs equivalent of Rugby's NPC.  Club based with a good funding model would be ideal but not achievable.   All Junior Football  has heavy support from pokies for gear and coaches I would suspect, just less obvious to find.

You assume that a youtube channel would get more hits but is that definite?  Would also require NZF to take a lot more financial risk in that they would need to contract a broadcaster to film and produce the content and then agree a distribution model with a distributor.  Maybe in the long term that's a good idea but certainly doesn't seem as clean.  Maybe also being shown on SKY is a better selling point for sponsors as opposed to distribution through youtube?

The pokie argument has been done to death but at the end of the day if you can think of a replacement source of funds I am sure NZ Football is all ears.  You say it isn't sustainable but much of sport in NZ is funded through pokies and has been for many years.  It's an arrangement that seems to suit most people.

I for one support the idea of youtube/an alternative streaming option.

Look at OFCTV - I am a subscriber on youtube and receive almost daily emails, reminders, and get to watch a lot of live football for free, and actually really enjoy it.

If HANDA P'ship were to do something similar, I think they would soon get more hits than they currently do on Sky personally.

Think they have 1 more season with Sky

then they should look at what Basketball did with streaming via the NZ Herald - they were getting 20k+ views for some games

Not when Taranaki played Hawkes Bay or Nelson they weren't.

It'd be a good move though, especially if it meant they could have more than one live game per week.

Kilkolly is an excellent replacement for Harris.

Robertson going back to HBU. Wonder who they will get in because there aren't many good CBs floating around the country.

young Wellington born and bred lad who grew up near Miramar Park and used for ball boy for Team Wellington?

Only started following national League last year when Tasman joined, and didn't grow up with football in Wellington.

Scott grew up in Matamata. played northern league for several seasons with Melville United in midfield, then at right back for WaiBop United in the summer, initially with the youth team.

Moved to Auckland, transferred to Central United and played a couple of summers with Waitakere United.

Scott's main claim to fame is that he was NZ's U-20 800m champion circa 2012. Terrific athlete. First-rate team and club man.
