Back to earth on Saturday, unfortunaly it will be a draw against the BumbleBees..

Is the Australian import playing for the Onions?

A Mosgoilan loss calls for a celebration..!!!

I understand that Old Boys have applied to enter the league next year. Could be a chant, Who killed Southland Football, Keny did..

Yep, heard that too. Apparently the decision is either cut one team out for an 8 team league or let Old Boys in for a 10 team league.

1 game left in the round and GI is sitting in 3rd, quite humbling. Didnt get to the game but from sources it was good to take  the 3 points. Joel in the team is a bonus. The Aussie is meant to have a nice touch and plays a good ball. Could be a good game against Tech this weekend. Here's hoping for an upset!

Heard the Cavvy Mosgiel game was a lot tighter than the score showed.

The Shetland Pony supporters have gone very quiet, isnt it meant to be their year, something about a reunion!

Onions vs Grumpy Old Mens didnt quite live up to the billing! Someone described it as Boys playing Men. Probably a good description.

The GI team thought they were in with a chance when Techs right back "Judda" decided to throw a punch in the 10th Minute and take an early shower. (If I have the TECH player incorrect, apologies)

Trouble is the two front runners Burgess and Rickerby gave the four GI defenders a hard time, first goal was a deflected shot, 2nd was a Rickerby header from a long throw. Third after half time and with a man advantage GI was 3 down. GI lacked the ability to really get round the flanks of Tech and kept trying to hit 30 yard cross field passes. Pulled one back after the keeper fumbled under a challenge. Tech were tiring but GI lacked options to get closer.

TECH deserved the win, GI can improve.

The Aussie got under the skin of "Judda", sprayed passes cross field and had a nice touch, did seem to lack a physical presence and the combination in the middle needs some time to develop. Joel was perpetual motion but did seem to be trying too hard at times.

Tech had quality across the whole field and were also very physical, not just in size but also speed to the ball.

Taking into account Old Boys performance on Monday it probably will be an eight team league next year. Im voting Mosgiel for the drop... Just joshing..

Thinking that Tech, Cavvy, GI form a SI league with 5 from ChCh North.

That leaves 6 from Otago plus Queens Park to make a bye..

Barney, if you press Old Boys they give you the ball.

Stitcher, you need to take some Crigs/Gobber training sessions.

I'll chip in then Dino to get your traffic up.

Interesting read about the referee using racial abuse, that's terrible.  Not a lot of emphasis on the fact that it was a referee doing it, however will see what happens in the report. I believe it should be a harsher punishment as the referees are there to enforce the rules and not break them.

A couple of years back an assistant referee pushed a player in a Canty Utd game, and he only got a minor punishment. If referees expect players to get mega bans when they get assaulted I think it should be returned if not worse if they themselves do it.

Rant over.

Totally agree with what you're saying Vim, the ref in question is never far from controversy down here & i'm not surprised it's involved him & the Grants Braes club aka "the hills have eyes"

Thanks Vim,

Im taking a deep breath on this because so far it is a beat up in the ODT. An assessor has commented in his report. Until I know what the original comment is I cant make one myself. If it is the Ref in question he has been getting a fair amount of stick lately.

We are really short of Refs in football in general. The major reason is the abuse that is directed at them is horrendeous. An example is a 6"6 keeper drops the ball in an inncouous challenge from a 5"8 player (keeper went over the player to get the ball). Totally nuts off at the ref and linesman. Player flatten's an oppo with a roundhouse, his team mates are chasing the ref when he goes to talk to the linesman. A team is 4 nil up in old mans football, 50/50 on a handball in the box not given and a player calls the ref a fucking cheat. Great last ditch tackle and a women is going nuts at the linesman for not flagging a foul.

What happens when a person fronts up to you, there face is a centimeter from your face and they are giving you a serve, would you push them away?

Keep warm..

Dino, everbody knows referees can get a rough time, the players are flying around the field, the adrenaline is pumping, some passion or even anger is naturally evident in these types of situations. Referees know this, and are taught to deal with it using several different types of management techniques. Making negative comments towards players is not one of them.

Nevertheless, I have to agree with Vim's statement regarding referees being the protectors of the laws of football. They are certainly not above the law and should be there to set an example to players, coaches and spectators. Now I'm not aware of this particular situation, of course innocence must be assumed until guilt proven etc etc, however should their be even a shred of truth to this story then it is a sad day for referees and the local game. One incident by one referee could potentially undermine confidence in all the referees that go out there each Saturday and give up their time to help players have a fair and safe contest. By making national news (yes it was run by stuff.co.nz) its impacts could effect referees outside of Dunedin and possibly even referees of other sporting codes.

Despite whatever the truth, it truly highlights the pressure referees are under to perform without creating controversy, and how every action has a consequence and that referees should be (and the better ones are) aware of this.

I understand a hearing on the subject is scheduled for Monday and am interested to see how this develops.
