Nelson is officially the best youth club in the south island after winning South Island U19s even without their best player Adam Smith who was with Tawa.

Nayland College is second best in the country. The talent is there, just got to keep it in the region!

Maybe you should test yourself in Napier and see how you get on.

You'd still have to beat Woolston Tech to claim that title. You guys would be better off in Napier.

If Woolston is the best, which I doubt, there cant be much talent down south. Look at their Napier result.

They may well do next year given they are looking at relegation after poor results this year in Napier. Plenty of Tech hierachy down having a look at the Tsunami tourney ove the weekend, watch this space.
May have some Nth Island teams next year as well with the success of this years event, tourney needs to turn into a 20 or 24 team event. And the winner should meet the winner of the Napier tourney in a play off game in Wellington 2 - 3 weeks later as a curtain raiser to a Phoenix game as part of 1st prize for both events courtesy of a giant national sponsor like the ASB .
Now that's a cunning plan!

They could just do North vs South. Top two from each meet in a semi final. Final is televised.

If they can't televise the Chatham Cup, then what chance do you think that this would get televised.

Woolston also got turned over by Coastal Spirit the week before the tournament, Coastal ended up in 7th - 8th playoff at the Tsunami tournament which gives a rough approximation of relative ability, while Nelson and Western were both very good. Again speculation only though.

But Nayland College are the second best school in the country. I'm sure a team from the South Island would be very competitive, I just don't get why only one team from the South Island is entered the whole "National Champs"

Cost. Which is why Dunedin Tech came to ChCh this year even though they won the Satellite tournament in Napier last year.

I wouldn't say that. It never used to get Akld teams or Sth Island teams.
Sth Island are probably better off having their own one with the cost involved. I thought the talent at the Tsunami Sth Island tournie was very good -and it is still growing (and I have seen about a bizzillion Napier tournies).

Before 2006 there weren't any South Island teams up there.

2006: Chch Tech - Satellite Tounament Winners. Qualify for main draw.
2007: Chch Tech only south island team in competition - winners
2008: Runners up
2009: Dunedin Tech win Satellite Tournament (didn't have the bankroll to send team up this year)

In the short time that the South Island teams have taken part, they have been successful.

So really 07 and 08 they have done well, as they should given they have the pick of the bunch down there being the only team from Chch that enters. Relegated this year btw.

And Feverish, even the top Welly teams would dominate the Sth Island, let alone the top Auckland teams.

Do you think the rules are different for SI teams? They are allowed the same amount of guest spots as any other team in the competition. Given they have been in Napier 5 times, won twice and got runner up once. That's a better success rate than any North Island team, No? This is Tech's first poor finish since they've competed, and in your eyes, that's grounds to call the quality of football from the entire south island sh*t. Stop being so ignorant.

The competition where they do have "the pick of the bunch" is the National Youth League. And we all know what happened there.

A committed defensive effort paved the way for success for the Nelson Suburbs under-19 football team at the South Island club championships at Labour Weekend.

The side, which was coached by John Slotemaker and Brendan Crichton, went through the tournament unbeaten, scoring 32 goals in their six matches and conceding only one.

In the final they beat two-time defending champion Western, from Christchurch, 2-0, with Nayland College's Gagame Feni, recently selected in the Canterbury United ASB Bank premiership side, scoring a brace.

Slotemaker said all members of the team played their part over the weekend, but he gave special praise to the the defensive unit of James Hockley, Erik Panzer, Niall Young and Isaiah Dayman.

"The reason we did so well was because the defence played so well."

Panzer and Young had their best matches in the final, Dayman was unflappable throughout, and Hockley provided some mongrel.

He said the team also had Feni and Jerry Donga scoring seven goals each, and substitute Darrell Hannah providing impact off the bench.

Slotemaker said the victory was especially pleasing given the strength of some of the teams at the tournament, with Western fielding a number of players from its Mainland side, and two Dunedin clubs entering strong lineups.

"All 16 players would have played in every game, including the final ... that was one of the keys. We've got a really strong group of players, right through the 16."

It was more evidence of Nelson's ability to find and develop promising footballers.

"We've never had any problems producing young players, it's just a continuation of the last four or five years of youth development."

Zara Walker, Bridget Milne and Emily Jensen were part of the Coastal Spirit side that lost the women's under-19 final to Waterside Karori

Any Nth Island club is welcome to come on down and have a crack, while you're at it bring your girls team for the National Girl's U19's at the same time. I think you'd get a surprise.

I enjoyed reading the last page or so.
I will put my twopence in for what it maybe worth.
Tech will not get relagated to the SI tournament as is taken over more than the one year of results. Tech had early games on both the first two days. The speed and strength of the NI teams played a big factor in the outcome this comes back to playing week in week out in a mens grade
as Birkenhead u19 do. The years Tech have done well they have had players playing in the MPL, Tane Gent only went up to Napier on the Sunday.

Tsunami TM
Dunedin Tech I thought may have done better after the Saturday morning showing.
How many of the Nelson team at the Tsunami T/M can play again next year or the year after?
The Nomads team at the tournament have 14 of their guys available for the next 2 years and a couple of them 3 or more years.

North Island or South Island, who's the best this year?
Makes the NYL a not to miss set of games, lets see what the NI teams can do this time.

I'd say there are three who will be too old. Adam Smith who was a guest player for Tawa anyway, will be taking up a US scholarship too.

I dont really see how you can rip out s.i football just because tech has had one bad year. I play in chch and have been up to napier as i guest player for a north island team so know what the quality is like. If western and nelson were able to send teams up to napier they would both be challenging for the title. The true test of where the best under 19 football is played is the NYL. All the best u19 players that are playing in NZ are included rather than just the ones whose clubs go 2 napier. And as previous people have said...we won that final 6 nil. From that result you would have to say the mainland region has the best youth football in the country...

Still though other teams would not get that for a final. At the very least it means that Nelson should be given two games a season to host as a minimum.

If Nelson were to get a team it would probably be the biggest team in Nelson (that does not mean they would get the highest crowds) because they only get a few ITM Cup games and a few 20/20 games per season.
