Callum McCowatt’s more than earnt it. Ten times the player that Tade was in the grand final, played his ass off and turned in brilliant performances over the season - he’s gonna keep improving.

Not sure I'd go that far. Thought he was pretty anonymous for large parts of the game. Popped up with the goal when needed though.

Also, not disagreeing with the sentiment that he deserves a call up. I agree with that part!

That's if Declan let's him accept a call-up.  Under-20s would be his next test I would think.

Doubt Declan would stop him being called up to All Whites - makes him easier to sell overseas, gives Ole more kudos so sell themselves (not that they don't do that anyway)  and of course theres the development fee they would get

Since the season in most countries is well underway, and in spite of the sharkfest NZF finds itself in right now, I thought I'd resurrect this thread a bit to take a look at some names that could work out for the AWs on merit.

Keegan Linderboom - May be an eligibility crisis but the guy is banging in goals in the Singaporean league and did very well for Waitakere in his time here. May be worth a quick scout.

Fabrizio Tavano - Recently gained his NZ citizenship and he's a guy I'd love to see playing for the AWs or even the Phoenix due to his versatility from DM to striker. Him and his father aren't model citizens but I like the way he plays.

James McGarry - Must be doing something right to get minutes in the Eredivisie?

Niko Kirwan - Playing full matches in Serie C, a respectable league. Chris Ikonomidis was called up for Australia while playing for Lazio's youth, so the level wouldn't be too different, right? Already been called up but hasn't played.

Callum McCowatt - Surely better than Billingsley and Patterson?

James Musa - Been called up under Hudson but since then has become a rock at USL level, integral to Phoenix Rising reaching the USL playoff final.

Jordan Vale - For me he's better than Colvey at right back, done very well in the two ACFC games I've attended along with Dan Morgan, another wildcard

Never heard of Linderboom but sounds like he's worth a look.

Tavano never really impressed me that much - and I hope Schmid calls up professional players only from now on.  The only time I'd consider calling an amateur up is if they're totally ripping up Handy to shreds.

Kirwan < Ikonomidis, but they're also very different types of players.  Serie C is very competitive for NZ standards and I think a couple of steps up from the Primavera leagues (Serie A youth).

If it’s a full strength AWs squad, just given club level they are at, and in Musa’s case week in week out performance - both Musa and McGarry go close.

The others only come close if it’s a weakened AWs side - which for any games in next 12 mths is likely.

Schmid included Kirwan for Canada game but discarded him for tourney in India. That says something.

Like NP I don’t think amateurs should be picked. This is esp true for those guys who turned down the chance to trial with the Nix, ie choose to say amateur. They had their reasons but I think it sends wrong message to their AWs team mates, that we are not serious about playing at the highest level possible. I would however make an exception for young guys like Just, McCowatt etc who you know have ambitions to be pros overseas. If being in an AWs squad potentially assists them with that, that’s good for NZ football long term.

Never heard of Linderboom. Sounds like another Kaye Vincent.

Linderboom spent a bit of time in Handy Prem playing for Waitak. A big, lumbering forward, servicable but not great even at that level.

If he's a potential All White, then so is Hamish Watson.

I'm not sure if Ryan's eligibility was ever sorted through, and if it wasn't, him being out of the country won't be helping the situation.

Assuming we get some games for March who are some names you want to see?

McCowatt, Just, McGarry, Woud as starter, Sail are a couple guys I'd love to have in

Legend

Depends somewhat who we are playing, venue, and who’s available for a game in March.

If was say Socceroos want strongest team possible, but a Thailand/Mynamar/Oman then yeah just experiment. The real men’s focus this year is ensuring Olympic qualification, ie U23s.

Presume none of the MLS/USL contingent would be available, and probably none of the Euro pros who are either injured or if playing, are mostly at clubs trying to stave off relegation (Wood, Lewis, Themi). Boyd unlikely to put his hand up, and maybe neither Rojas (trying to establish himself in Denmark) or N Boxall (club bidding for promotion).

McGarry and Woud yes if doesn’t harm their club ambitions. Maybe Jesse Edge is worth a look. Even guys like Adam Mitchell, Monty Patterson, Cory Brown and Myer Bevan who are club less. Ditto Marinovic if not trialling. Is Gleeson still at Portland or club unattached? Nik Tzanev, Trevor Zwesloot, Max Mata, Logan Rogerson, Andrew Blake - with an eye to the future plus ensure enough for a full squad! They don’t all have to get a game, just be part of the squad.

But yes sounds like NZF are in talks with Handa Prem clubs, about a possible AWs verus Handa Prem semis conflict. If Schmid can’t pick some quality domestic players, sadly he may really struggle to assemble a squad in March, and force NZF to can any possible game(s). Could well be the main reason why AWs game(s) in March haven’t been confirmed as yet.

I’m sure for example Hay/Edge would love to qualify their ES kids for the OCL and then possible CWC.

Those are some pretty huge carrots, so releasing the likes of Payne, De Jong, Just, McCowatt in March to Schmid (thereby missing Handa Prem semi), they would rightly not be happy about.

Marinovic still my first choice definitely, but in friendlies I'd especially like to blood Woud now that he's second choice in the Eredivisie which isn't to be sniffed at at all.

Crocombe not playing in the National League, Gleeson worst save percentage out of any goalkeeper in the MLS and was released, Keegan Smith a rotation option at Tasman, Tzanev may have a good future but playing in 7th tier right now and not international quality yet, and Williams is probably on his pension about now so my constant three would be Marinovic, Woud then Sail

He’d be a RB choice right? Not sure where he’s been playing for Reggina, if it’s in centre midfield though that’s seriously impressive. Not sure of their talent now but they were historically a huge club in the region iirc. Would love to see Kirwan considered

Mainly as a RWB or RM from what I've read. He's playing week in, week out. By all accounts he's not that flashy but very disciplined and tireless. More importantly, he's succeeding where many have failed before: getting regular minutes in a decent European league.
Serie C is fully pro and very competitive. I'd say the top teams would be on level with league one/mid table championship.

He does seem to be getting more mins this season.

However Schmid picked him for that Canada game, had a look, but discarded him for the India tourney when even more players were unavailable. Might say something about his future chances of being picked.

Or they might have agreed not to call him up as Serie C doesn't stop for international breaks? Also, he was still with Mestre at the time of the Canada game iirc and he's had more time to develop since then. Not saying he should be the starting RB, just that he's worth a look.

India tourney was June last year. Presume Serie C season had finished by then.

I think from memory Schmid just overlooked him, but yes he has been getting more mins at Reggina.

Anyway it’s all moot, without any AWs games!

Seem to recall them being here direct from Thailand playing for the Onehunga Nike cup pre season squad, and then on to Waitakere. I seem to remember they were here to gain experience , were very good players. can't recall if they actually played in that Nike Cup team, but also seem to remember Westlake as a school they were at. May be wrong on that but Neil Emblem was coach of both I think.

Nah, would serve little purpose. He's 32 and last week was dropped to the bench by Morecambe (League Two), then when he came on he gifted a goal with a terrible back pass.

Also League Two doesn’t stop for the March FIFA window, and Morecambe are in a relegation scrap.

Reasonable chance come 2021 WC qualifying either (or even both) Smith & Reid will be injured or retired. Time to look at some youth. Mitchell, Brotherton (if released by his USL club), Payne (still only 25), TAHW. Even Cory Brown who is with Unattached FC.
Also have Doyle & Nikko Boxall - though Boxall's club Viborg are gunning for promotion, and the Danish 1st Div (2nd tier) doesn't stop in March either.

Presume Tuiloma & M Boxall will stay in the MLS - which again doesn't stop for FIFA windows.
