With the Spain trip coming up within a month, it's a great time to test out new uncapped or unproven players with a stake to claim in the team - not talking about your Higgins and Dyers and Prelevićes, but more guys like Nikko Boxall, Ridenton and maybe Steven Old/Fitzgerald in defense - players who have been knocking at the door for a while. Niko Kirwan as a dark horse.

More national league players too - Gulley, Hudson-Wihongi, White and Tavano (if eligible) sound great. Too early for McCowatt?

Why? He's certainly playing well enough and is so much better than a lot of dross Hudson dished up. Obviously Old is old and might not be a starter but it is just a friendly camp and he's earned it

Fitzgerald remains ineligible for the mean time.

If he wants to play for the All Whites he needs to leave Japan.

Back in 2012/2013, he declined a call up from Herbert stating he couldn't play for the national side.

Each Japanese club only has five spots for foreign imports - Similar to the A-League. Except Japan doesn't allow dual citizenship.

So Fitzgerald spent most of his youth there and gained Japanese citizenship, meaning he had to hand in his NZ passport. This freed up a spot at his former club Albirex Niigata and Fitzgerald was no longer counted as a foreigner. He now holds a jap passport, but had to throw away his NZ one meaning he can't represent NZ, unless he makes a move outside of Japan and get's his NZ passport back.

Adam Mitchell.

Nikko Boxall.

Tyler Boyd - but up to him to prove to team mates & coach, he wants in.

And yes agree great opportunity to look at some fresh faces. Seems pointless to me bringing across the Atlantic, the MLS contingent (except probably Bevan), as they will be pushing for match day spots in their club sides.

happy to see Old get another run. He's going well in the UK and has 10 years plus pro experience now. How has Wihongi played since his injury, he looked a real prospect.

I know it won't happen but damn I want to see Fitzgerald. Imagine having him, Reid, Smith, Boxall and Tzimopoulos plus some young CB (Brotherton, Mitchell, Edge) qwho could crack in the near future. That's a lot of depth in there. But talking about those who might get called, I think Ridenton and Sarpeet Singh deserve a chance, specially considering how thin our midfield looks

Tim Payne interests me as a CB.

Has done well there recently, and given his earlier days as an attacker come DM - he probably could play the role of a ball playing CB.

Nikko Boxall - Probably the most deserving, has gone from playing pub football in Germany to a solid couple of years in Finland before signing on in Denmark.

Tyler Boyd - With Hudson out the picture might still be keen to be involved with the AW's. Needs to show he wants it though.

Ryan de Vries - Surprised no one has mentioned him thus far, although his season in Japan will just be getting underway.

Sam Brotherton - Recall, looking to the future.

Adam Mitchell - One for the future, give him a chance and chuck him in a National Team camp, see if he can step up.

Tyler Lissette - Solid first pro season in Sweden last year, 26 years old, lets see what he can bring to the team.

Michael den Heijer - Hasn't made a first team appearance in Holland yet, but another one for the future.

I agree with most of the above (not sure about Lissette personally), but almost feel like we should look at the list this way:

a) Current eligible players who are good enough

b) Players who are eligible to represent other countries, whether we believe they're the next Messi or the next BMIngham, so they're cap-tied and also trialed at the same time.

Only way to lock players in is to play them in a competitive fixture ie. Nations Cup or a World Cup Qualifier.

Not sure either of those places is where you want to be giving players a "trial".

Yeah only time we are ever really able to do that is when it is meaningless - bit like how we played Durante against Fiji (or was it New Caledonia), to se if he was eligible, we'd already qualified so result didn't matter

Agree with what you guys are saying, but couldn't we call up one or two possible players during early WC qualifiers (or even earlier, even though that won't cap-tie them), take a look at them in training, and if we like what we see, either start them or give them 2' off the bench, so they ours?

we could, but are there actually many (if any) players in that position?
