NZF have asked FIFA to come up with some cash... I imagine this will happen, which will help out.

I use to play Rugby with a guy whose job was to organise charter flights on private planes (overseas admittedly) according to him, once you got over 30 (@business) people it becomes quite cost effective as the main costs (fuel / pilot / landing) are constant. No idea where NZF got the figure $2million from, but I doubt it very much!

Given the size of the ALL Black wider team, I can imagine them paying $2million plus each time they fly out for a game.

Great to read that three key Peruvian players won't be released until 5 days before the playoff game. We are going to need all the help we can get!

If I was Peru I would keep some key players back home for the second leg, who can be fresh as. Im sure they could send a team to NZ who haven't had to travel around the world, and will still dick us.

This topic has been done to death a few weeks ago when I raised it first. At that time we were talking about Argentina, not Peru (same question though). However, everyone here disagreed with me, and that included people whose opinion I value as they are usually usually spot on. The comments were along the lines of that no opposition worth their salt would risk a potential banana skin by sending pretty much one team to play us here and have say half a fresh team to come in to finish us off in Lima.  As a result, I dropped this topic too.  I couldn't be arsed to start it again.

I don't think I weighed in on the issue a few weeks ago from memory, but while I agree with you that Peru are definitely better than us and could win even by bringing in a team of mostly second stringers, I still don't think any team would ever do that and take that risk.

They will want to kill the game off early - if they score two goals here in Wellington, they will feel the qualification is pretty much in the bag (and rightly so), and for this reason they'll want to have their best players available for the first leg too.

Here's hoping those three who won't be released until 5 days before carry a slight niggle into the game.. :D

Media now saying that FIFA will give NZ, Peru, Hondurous, and Australia $150k each to help with travel costs.

Website estimate calls it $400-500K for a commercial airliner charter the day after the game.

Interesting quote here

The reason it could be of Hudson's making was because Durante returned from the Confederations Cup with a sports hernia. He played through the injury at the tournament, but it required surgery when he returned and delayed the start of his pre-season.

The All Whites went through rigorous fitness training in the leadup to that tournament after Hudson identified many of the players were not fit enough to compete.

There has been a simmering feeling in the Phoenix camp that over-training led to Durante's injury.

*dons devils advocate hat*

Watching 2013 over again, Dura got done for pace a few times by the Mexican forwards.

Perhaps forcing a reshuffle here, maybe Themi in at the back, might not be a disaster.

Suspect it will be Boxall, Smith and Reid rather than Themi.  Durante would have been my third if he wasn't fudgeed by NZ Football.

Depends if Smith recovers properly from his current hamstring strain.

Hudson overtraining a player who'd played through injury for him and then gone for surgery is pretty classic Hudders stuff.

Also, goes out of his way to keep every team happy (including the Jets by not taking their second keeper) except the nix.

He did 90 last week for the U23s and 45 this week.  East Anglian Derby this weekend so if he makes the bench McCarthy must believe he's fit, you would be a brave man taking a selection risk in that game.

Not too fussed about Dura, always seemed so slow, its gotta be Boxall, reid and smith at the back (themi back-up). I was always surpsied to see Dura start ahead of Themi at confeds etc. I think Themi is much the better player.

Agreed, I think Themi is under used as either a CB or DM for us. Has the same sort of mongrel as Durante, just a little more class on the ball... also he scores semi regularly at club level so might be more of an offensive threat.

Agreed, we're only more used to Durante but I think Themi's a lot better player.

Losing any experienced squad player this close to Peru games is a blow. Smith is only just returning from injury, and Reid & Themi both have history of back/hamstring strains.

Suspect Themi at the Confeds Cup was only half fit (hence given no game time) - as he missed the end of the last Greek Super League season with injury.

Brotherton has potential, but we don't want him having to play any minutes against the Peruvians.

Still I'm sure Peru will have their own injured players missing - just they have the depth to plug any gaps.

Maybe the playoffs should be more regional to lessen travel time/Timezone issues and to cut costs...eg Honduras vs Peru (concacaf vs conmebol) and Australia vs NZ (Asia vs oceania) ?

Ipswich vs. Norwich live midnight Sunday beIN Sport 2 (mid-day Sunday kick-off in UK).

Yeah, Smith seems fit enough now:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/nz-teams/98...

"Smith has been sidelined with a hamstring injury recently, but has made two appearances for Ipswich Town's under-23s team and was on the bench for the first team as they lost 1-0 to Sheffield United on Sunday. The most likely beneficiary of Durante's injury would be Sunderland defender Sam Brotherton, who was expected to miss out on selection if Durante and Smith were fit."

La Republica, Peruvian paper, covering the Kiwi Messi...

http://larepublica.pe/deportes/1133205-el-jugador-de-origen-chileno-que-defiende-los-colores-de-nueva-zelanda

Among the figures that has the selection of New Zealand there is one that has Latin American blood. A midfielder often with skills to complicate any defense.

His size (1.68 meters) and talent have served him to be christened the "Messi Kiwi" , but in fact is called Marco Rojas, son of a Chilean immigrant in New Zealand .

Interesting FB vid from Peru supporters off home page here.....best not to keep poking that fire NZF.  A vid of landings at Wellington might be a nice response.

Lately (in this campaign) the fans have been going to Peru's hotel to show support instead of rival hotels to disturb them. Hopefully that continues when the All Whites arrive in Lima

Peru will release its squad tomorrow

There will probably be no surprises. The starting 11 is also pretty much a certainty apart from potential injuries

Starting 11 should be 4-2-3-1

Pedro Gallese - Veracruz (Mex)

Aldo Corzo - Universitario (Peru)

Christian Ramos - Emelec (Ecuador)

Alberto Rodriguez - Universitario (Peru) - injury doubt

Miguel Trauco - Flamengo (Brazil)

Renato Tapia - Feyernord (Netherlands) - injury doubt

Yoshimar Yotun - Orlando City (USA)

Andre Carrillo - Watford (England)

Christian Cueva - Sao Paulo (Brazil)

Edison Flores - AaB (Denmark)

Paolo Guerrero (c) - Flamengo (Brazil)

As soon as I read Martin's comments it was obvious what an idiotic thing it was to say. The last thing you want to do is trigger South American supporters like that...  Any hope we had of not getting a terrible time over there was gone as soon as he said that. It was going to be bad before now it will be even worse...

Regardless of what NZF said there fans would still do the same to our team like they have other touring teams. They haven't qualified since last in 82 so they will do whatever it takes.

We have two MLS starters - Marinovic & Boxall (which yes is more than Peru's one).

Gleeson was once a MLS starter - but lately confined to the bench (not that he will be in AWs squad). The other USA based AWs - Musa, Colvey, Tuiloma, Wynne & Bevan are really all USL players.
