Herald said the Peruvians don't like the hotel or training options in Wellington and are probably going to stay and train in Orkland and fly down for the match......good luck finding seats on a flight.

Shame if this happens.....it would be great for Peru to arrive and have to train for a few days  in a good ól Wellington NW gale.

Four of the top six football crowds in NZ history were for Nix games which is pretty amazing.

I don't know, I think having them fly down just before the game and land in a Wellington gale then have to play in the swirling wind of Westpac after training in the relative calm of Auckland would be a bit of an advantage to us. Espeacially as one of their players apparently is afraid of flying.

I'm always afraid of flying in to Wellington too.

Why the All Whites should have played in Auckland

The following excerpt really grated me. The primary purpose of this fixture is to help us qualify for the World Cup! We would make money regardless of whether this match is in Auckland or not.

Auckland has had it's chance to be the focal point for football in this country, and fortunately that time has passed. Just because it is logistically easier to get in and out of the country is not the selling point here.

Also, If he thinks it's not 'home' advantage because only 2-3 AW's actually play in Wellington, I'd question why he would think playing such an important game at a stadium that our national team haven't graced since 1988, would somehow strike some chord or affinity within our squad.

Sorry Auckland (not really) stick to your rugby!

Would be great if the crowds would turn up to an All Whites game in Auckland, maybe they should start off small like attending the #Handy team games or getting a professional team in the A-league.

There's an argument that playing the game in Auckland could have given them a greater chance of success on both fronts.

Surely the only argument for the game in Auckland is the extra 20k seats? Not saying its a reason to have the game in Auckland but its the only big advantage I could see over Wellington.

It's a moot point anyway. The game is at Westpac, let's move on. Gourdie's just looking for clicks with his article, if he really meant it, he would have written it back when the venue was announced, not now.

I don't get that list of big crowds

I went to a Phoenix game in Christchurch played at Lancaster Park back in around 2010 I think and there was a big crowd yet its not on the list?

There seems to a lot of assumption in this article.

Firstly, that you could sell an extra 12,000 seats at the same price. Demand hasn’t been hugely greater than supply. People who wanted to get tickets have got them. Even in a bigger city, there is no indication that Auckland would come out for this game. There is no previous history to go on. Most of the evidence suggest the opposite. Most wouldn’t have experienced 09 or 13 to entice them to go again.

Cost of running event is not the same. Eden Park costs a lot more. Coupled with likely differences in support offered by each council, it’s safe to say Eden Park would be a more expensive exercise.

So you’d probably have to have lower ticket prices, with higher costs. Even with the added ticket sales, would it be that much more gate takings?

The atmosphere at Eden Park would be significantly worse. That’s undeniable.

While there isn’t a big Nix contingent, all of the All Whites would have played at Westpac before. How many would have played at Eden Park. 5? 6? Our players are more familiar with Westpac.

It’s really not that much harder to fly from Wellington to Lima than from Auckland to Lima. NZF aren’t looking at chartering flights because of the Wellington to Auckland leg. It’s only an hour away! With over a dozen of flights a day.

Peru are hardly doing us a favour playing in Lima. Playing at altitude is only really helpful if your whole team is acclimatised for that. Only a couple of their players play at altitude. If it was really helpful for them, why wouldn’t they play all their WCQ at altitude? Because they want to play at their home stadium. Heck they even moved a concert to do it. 

It would have made sense if it ended up being Argentina we played. But they had to make the call on the stadium quite early, and think given how our opposition, ticket sales etc have played out since I’d say they made the right decision. 

If I'm not mistaken. We had a good 10,000 people turn out against Fiji. And I don't think Auckland got that many against the Solly's, including the White Noise. For me Wellington fans are more likely to come and get loud.

When West Ham played Phoenix at Eden Park the attendance was crap and so too the atmosphere, Compare that when Nix played New Castle and W Ham played that aussie club at the cake tin. Awesome atmosphere. Awesome crowd. 

I agree - this stuff is really a side show.  Where are the article (a) analysing the Peru side and thinking about how we stand a chance of beating them and (b) talking about the form/fitness of our own players?  Not blaming anyone for responding but we've had 2 weeks talking about ticket prices, the location of the game and travel arrangements for the 2 teams and it's bloody boring!  I like that Gourdie promotes football but this is all very superficial stuff

In defence of Eden Park Auckland got out large for the Black Caps during the world cup and it was a cracking atmosphere. It's also a better stadium for football as you're closer to the pitch - the cake tin is woeful from that perspective.

However I agree that Eden Park has to sit lower down the priority list.

Also doesn't NZF have an agreement with the stadium in Albany? If they did have it in Auckland wouldn't it be there?
