No, but I expected us to be competitive and to try and play possession football - neither occured. Other than some occasional short work out of the back which often then resulted in kicking possession away 2 seconds later I spotted none of the things Hay claimed he was going to change.

That display could easily have been a Hudson or Herbert coached team.

utter bollocks, as a team we haven't played in almost two years. This squad has been together for a few days at best and travelled across the world to be here. None of them have trained under hay as the NZ coach so will need regular game and training time to gel. As a first time performance this wasn't bad at all.

My takeaways.

Joe Bell looks quality and surely has the holding role locked in with Thomas looking ahead. Great engine, decent on the ball and not afraid to carry it forward. The guy has literally come across the Atlantic from playing college football to taking on a team of full time professionals and looked every part the player.

Just and McCowatt were decent, a little slow at times to make a decision, or weak on the ball. Both both showed good movement and a willingness to run with the ball, which is encouraging to see. It's great having players looking to make attacking runs with the ball.

Singh, struggled to get involved at times, but looks calm and like he generally has an age on the ball. More time together as a squad will help them to read his little passes etc.

I'm happy with what we tried to do - the subs didn't help, but I think this is more to do with the lack of time together than anything else. Reid looked class for a guy out for the last 18 months.

And I forgot,

Anyone thinking Ireland took it easy is having a laugh.

They are one win away from the Euro's. Every chance you get might be your last to earn a spot in the squad or to working your way onto the bench. None of their players would have cruised, it against their own interests.

Also its hard to get away with now, with all the GPS tracking and heart monitors etc.

Time to move on, Lithuania next up. They finished their EURO 2020 qualifying campaign with a 6-0 loss to Portugal this morning.

They finished last in Group B, with 7 losses and 1 draw from 8 games, and 5 goals scored and 25 conceded.

Anything but a win here will be a massive disappointment for me.

1. Baiter is being absolutely ridiculous

2.Bell and Thomas is the best we've had at CM since Simon Elliott. Those two could work really well together going forward.

I'd be confident of a win with a full team, but not the B-Team

No way Ireland was just strolling around. They scored two goals from headers and one from a defensive error (possible foul)... for significant parts of that game they were completely up against it and struggling.

That game was in Portugal. Ronnie with a hatty

Any AWs team sans it’s 3 best players (Reid, Wood and Thomas) would currently struggle to keep Portugal away under 6.

So I figure the match in Vilnius could be pretty even, unless the Lithuanians experiment with a host of youngsters.

Results this early in the WC cycle matter squat. Giving the likes of Collier a start does.

Need to give Hay 12 months and more than 2 days with his players, before can pass any real judgement.

disappointing result, but was good to see Winston make his comeback, team needs to improve but the young players in this side have me confident we will get better if we get more regular fictures

I tuned into the second half to see an NZ side under the pump by an Ireleand team that really only put the foot down when they needed to (as others have said)

I can say that Boxall and Tuiloma are not the answer to any question worth answering. Seems like Reid, despite his injury(s) still has the goods but I only state that based on others comments.

(again, only saw second half)

What interests me is when you get a fit again Clayton Lewis, where he sits. Also is Storm Roux really our only RB option?
Interested where a Kosta also comes in, for Just? Rojas?

If you were picking a full strength side for your most important game tomorrow, whom would you pick? Its an interesting question.

Fenton a right back option as well JV, although like Roux he's more of a wing back. Shame we can't clone Libby.

A solid start - the intent to play a passing style is there to see - and some times you just need to clear it! Great to see.  The young talent will grow into - I think - a quality team...could peak nicely for 2022!

However, if NZ can't get more games under their belt........Can someone explain why we don't play Aussie any more?

We did three deliberate nutmegs today to get past players today, by three different players.

Unheard of... but it shows the confidence of the young players!

Re: matches going forward...

NZF will be looking to secure European friendlies for March once Euro 2020 qualifying ends this coming week and it's known who's free (16 teams will be headed to playoffs).

The Nations Cup is going to be held in June 2020, as per the Fifa letter posted. There is talk this could effectively be used as buildup for the OlyWhites heading into Tokyo.

OFC World Cup qualifying is set to start in September 2020 and take up the three windows at the end of 2020 and two of the five in 2021, leaving one or two windows at the end of 2021 for the remaining Oceania team to prepare for the March 2022 intercontinental playoff.

There should also be a free window or two early in 2021 for potential friendlies.

From what I saw at the game last night i'd play Boxall at RB and have one of Smith/Tuiloma play beside Reid.

Libby was brilliant last night, Bell too. Both will be in Europe very soon. Singh appears to have bulked up a lot too from when I saw him play in Mumbai.

Bell had interest from the Bundesliga apparently after the u20... this game would have done is reputation no harm.

Turning down an offer if one did arrive from there would be a lot harder than the one he turned down in Denmark.

Still nothing might eventuate... I would love to know what the NIX offered him.

Just watched the game again, after trying to watch it sneakily at work. I was impressed with the style of play: assured, players taking responsibility. The movement around the midfield was good to watch. Cacace and Roux got forward for good periods of the game. Ireland managed to keep Wood under close wraps, but that gave other players more space.
Boxall did a good job at the back. Bell and Thomas were very impressive.
Well done the new age AWs.

Caught the replay last night.

Good: Bell, Thomas

Bad: Boxall, Roux, Tuiloma

For all this talk of how great our play was, I reckon we had maybe 4/5 phrases of solid passing that lead to anything positive. Then when Ireland decided to press, mostly at the start of the second half, we looked well under the pump. Perhaps that was partly due to Reid going off. And we really need to Marinovic to be better with his ball play if we want to do it more

Surprised not much has be said about our defensive play. We put almost no pressure on the ball until it got 40 yards from goal. No high press. Just retreat to 30 yards from goal.

Think our glaring weekness in our best starting XI is at right back. Roux is good going forward, but can be very turnstile.

Some interesting comments in here about just how good a performance this actually was.

I'm with those who say it was not great. Like Dale said, there was absolutely no press and as a few have said, most times when Ireland bothered, we couldn't cope. I would add that there wasn't much player movement between the thirds and most of the time our ball speed was too slow, but these two things can be excused given this team hasn't played together.

I am hugely excited about the quality of our player pool. We have several players worth watching and we could build a very talented footballing side. I enjoyed what the team attempted to do and I liked the intent. I thoroughly enjoyed the moments where things came together.

I'm relieved that Hay is championing playing this way. But it is only what everyone else in the World is doing.

I'm also going to have trouble tolerating the rhetoric, which is condescending for past players and teams. We tend to forget it, but New Zealand has always produced skillful players and I can think of a many old boys who would add a lot to this current side.

A former national team player, who is about 15 years my senior, once said to me "you young fellas think we just kicked the ball in the air all the time. But we didn't, we played long and short, fast and slow and the better players became much more technical because of it".

Went over for the game, wasn’t expecting us to be too flash considering the circumstances. Not gonna over analyse the game but at the ground you could tell who the top quality players were. Assembled a small group in the ‘away section’, played a game against some of their fans then to the pub pre match. All in all a fun weekend. Bit of a gripe with NZF about fan org/co-op. Pretty sure there were more NZ fans at the pub pre match than were in the away end and a lot of NZ fans were scattered around the stadium. Could only buy tickets to the away section if someone sent you the link so guessing most had no idea there was one. Was a poor crowd overall but we managed to make a bit of noise and have some laughs, just would have been much better if more were involved. Dublin is easily accessible for kiwis in Europe/uk and I can’t help but think NZF could have done a bit more to get the word out, a) try gather more support and b) have the majority of the fans in the same place at the ground. The group Flying Kiwis did a decent job (YF/WN do at home as well) but it’s tough on those with full time jobs etc, and NZF have a platform with a better reach - they put up a token post late on but didn’t really help a lot. Are we expecting too much of them or is this fair?

Sounds fair to me. Awesm that you guys could get to the game. It would be very frustrating to be an AW fan, but stuck elsewhere in the stadium and not able to join your brothers.
