I get the argument that a 1-0 loss against a team like NI is pretty creditable, and in terms of pure result I agree. But I do think that there was a lot wrong with that performance and a combination of them not finishing more chances and then their structure getting disrupted by making a triple substitution at halftime meant that the score flattered us. We couldn't get a shot off in the first half, and only 3 in the whole game,  and we were just giving them possession and space in our own half constantly. We weren't pressing but we weren't dropping back into a solid defensive shape either. When we had the ball we just hoofed it away. We could have been 3 or 4 down at half time the way we were going. The second half performance was an improvement in patches.

Hopefully we take some confidence and lessons from that and play a bit more compactly and try to use our pace on the break a bit more at the Confeds because that's easily when we look our best.

For me this is just preperation and the proof will be in how we play at the Confeds. I don't expect to win any of the games - lets be honest, every team there is far better than us - but I want us to compete and play football.

What really frustrates me is not that we a behind most teams in terms of skill and experience, but some of the basic stuff we seem always to get wrong. Watching this game ( and the under 20s) it is amazing how many times the ball is passed just behind the player. So even a simple square pass, with neither play u der pressure, moves us slightly backwards. Seldom does the ball seem to go directly to feet, or a meter in front to run onto it. It looks like a nervousness thing- fear of putting the ball into a space that might mean a challenge is made or something. But looking at better quality teams, it is not often players have to take a step or two back each time to get the ball.

This is NZ your talking about haha, you sound like a world class coach

What a weirdly snarky response. I was just giving my observation on a part of the game- which is what I thought the forum was for. And no, I don't sound like any sort of coach, nor trying to.

Most of our guys play at really low levels where those mistakes aren't punished like they are at international level.

Think Smith was rusty (hasn't played a lot), but will improve with more game time. Why wasnt Themi playing? Durante is past it.

Lewis and Colvey shouldnt play in confeds, will get destroyed, Roux and Bill gotta start

Themi was out injured in Greece since March 31 - he hasn't played any football for two months.

But I hope he's fit enough to take the field for NZ soon because he's one of our better players in the middle of defence or midfield.

Gotta say, Colvey looks pretty green and a bit overawed at times.

Still. he went to the same high school as me (Nelson College - though decades apart) and there hasn't been a fellow Nelsonian in the All Whites since Brockie got dropped.

So I'm prepared to cut him some slack....

Themi will probably play against Cabinteely, to see where his fitness is at.

3-2 at half time, Tuiloma gave up a penalty. Hudson has ringed the changes to start the second half

I would agree it largely looks like our top side. I would not have thought Wynne was better than Doyle but there is probably not much between them. I am surprised Themi can't get a run but then I read he has been injured? Also I think Marinovic is too 'accident' prone and would prefer Moss in the absence of Gleeson.

Tamati Williams all day long over Moss, surely?

Agree that Marinovic has a case of the oopsies at inappropriate times (ie: when on the field)

I've felt comfortable with Marinovic. Maybe I've missed the games he didn't look so sure.

Him and his near post do not seem to get on too well.  Next season in Bundesliga 3 will show how good or otherwise he actually is.

The commentary is wonderfully one-eyed. Michael O'Neil must walk on water to work and then Tommy Smith 'just caught the elbow there' as blood pours out of his nose.

Smith looks well off the pace, probably at least partially at fault for the goal?

If you're referring to the goals he conceded against NI and USA in both cases he was blinded by defenders until the shot came through them. He might have been able to do slightly better on both but they were hardly howlers.

Sorry but a top GK [2 Euro/Champions L Cup wins] coach would be calling the NI goal a GK error for being in the wrong position, too far off his line.

The same Coach has made Hugo Lloris the player he is today if you remember how average he was five years ago.

Huh? I don't follow sorry. Who is the coach and where did he say that?

It might be right, I'm no goalkeeping expert, but my interpretation was that it was the delay caused by being blinded which was the issue rather than the positioning.

I thought he was a little late getting down to the ball but pretty certain it was because he saw it late. Not all strikes on goal are in the open where you [as a GK] can see the initial strike of the ball.

Not so much these two, especially this one,  but other times against the Islands etc and I'm sure we will see at least one in Russia but really hope to be proved wrong.

Given how average we are, Russia will be his chance to shine and land a decent gig somewhere, putting all us naysayers to bed.
