With it being the anniversary of "that" match in Saudi, a couple of questions that have probably already been asked and answered before;

Had the AWs worn that green (was it green?) uniform before or since? The hue of the green is very unusual.....

Needing a bagful of goals, away in the Middle East, on an unusual pitch.......OK, Saudi probably dialled their performance in, but match fixing has to be raised here, surely? (not by us, as we have no money). The result is standing on a roof, waving a red flag

Great clip from Jeremy Wells and the Unauthorised History of NZ crew on 1981/2 campaign....complete with Osama Bin Laden as centre back for Saudi Arabia;

Hi Russ - the kit was actually blue, but the footage colour was all "washed out" because of the intensity of the light/heat there.  As the sun went down and lights came on, that changed, and by the end of the game it looked blue :)

Cheers Milts; so was that the only time they wore that blue shirt then?

And has there ever been any talk of match fixing?

I remember that one - sort of hideous, but sort of good in that we were trying to break away from the white/black combo. Just hadn't seen the blue/green one from the 82 campaign outside of the fix match in Riyadh.

That team improved with every game and ended up playing some really good football

If I remember correctly, we hadn't played for a while and things were a bit of a mess when John Adshead took over. So Adshead built a team around his Mount Wellington side in order to get started with some cohesion.

The squad was dominated by players from The Mount and Papetoetoe. More seasoned players like Noel Barkley, Billy Wright, Ricki Herbert, Michael Ridenton, Fred de Jong, Darren McClennan, Chris Riley and even Clint Gosling earlier in his career all played for either club and they were joined by The Mount's Martin Jennison, Nigel Debenham and Dave Witteveen, and Papetoetoe's Tommy Mason and Tony Levy. Some of these dudes weren't our best All Whites ever, but they were very good national league players who were used to playing well in what was a very tough league.

Unfortunately we got dicked by the Aussies over there. As usual, the Aussies were good, but we were massively under done and we also didn't have Wynton available. But by the end of this campaign, the team were humming. Typical NZ football, still preparing half way through.

I remember being at this game with a couple of friends from school - we went right to the top of the stand at Mt Smart and yelled and carried on... the crowd was so small that at a couple of places on the tape I could actually hear us yelling, and that would've picked up by the sideline mic...

On the bright side, at least it wasn't the curtain raiser for a rugby game, as the game the week before against Australia had been...

Hi everyone,

I've added a new playlist for the 1995 tour to South America:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8aDhxPE4J9...

After a warmup match in Tahiti, there was a 3-game tournament in Chile, and then 2 matches in Uruguay.  Was an interesting series of games - Bobby Clark in charge, some young players breaking through, and the All Whites scoring goals against impressive opposition. Includes the two clips below that were just uploaded - enjoy :)

Ouch!

This was an interesting side. There were no A games in 1994 and we had a new coach, Bobby Clark, who held trials and came up with a squad full of new players. Over time, the squad gradually welcomed back many players who were involved pre-Clark and then by the time we played the World Cup qualifiers against the Socceroos, the team had little resemblance to the side first picked and contained even more new additions.

This game was about half way through that 'process'

Fans of 'defenders in midfield' will be delighted to see that Stu Jacobs played regularly in a holding role. In this game he was joined by Graeme Marshall, who in fairness was a utility and who was subbed early just before the floodgates began to open.

The lineup for this side was Batty - Zoricich, Rennie, Gray, A. Evans - McGarry, Jacobs, Marshall, Elliott - Jackson - McClennan

Normally Clark played a 4-1-3-2 with either Coveny or Elrick up front with McClennan
