Thanks for the background Big Pete. And for confirming Zorro played. Was always a big fan of his and wondered why he wasn't in the squad as he was at Orient at the time. He actually went on to have two spells with St Albans, as an aside. First of which was 2yrs after this tour.

The highlight was a 1-0 win over Celtic at Parkhead, the proudest moment in manager Ian Marshall's football career:

Rufer, Coveny and de Jong were the awesome strike force for NZ that day. Chris Zorocich scored.

The Celtic FC 0-1 New Zealand

This game was almost didn't happen. The SFA had a rule that club teams weren't allowed to play international teams and Jim Farry, the secretary at time, was what you could call rather officious. He said the game could go ahead but behind closed doors. I think Celtic said if that was the case then the game wouldn't go ahead but that was an issue for them as they had been advertising it. In the end as it was a tuesday night and didn't affect any league or cup games the SFA relented and the game went ahead

interesting read all this.  Does anyone have a detailed list of who captained the AWs in each fixture we've played?  Ultimate NZ Football is very good but is lacking in this respect.

Received another one of the 1992 UK Tour programmes today. This one was against Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park and I have included the details underneath thanks to the link provided by Big Pete 65:

396. Friendly Feb 14, Birkenhead, Prenton Park Stadium, 3772
Tranmere Rovers 7-0 New Zealand (John Aldridge 6', x', y', z', Ian Muir 35', x+1', Graeme Branch)

Tranmere Rovers (England): Eric Nixon (Paul Collings 46'), Dave Higgins (Mark Hughes 46'), Ian Nolan, Kenny Irons (Graeme Branch 46'), Dave Martindale (Jim Harvey 46'), Steve Vickers, John Morrissey, John Aldridge, Chris Malkin (John McGreal 46'), Ian Muir, Tony Thomas. Coach: John King.

New Zealand: Clint Gosling, Michael Ridenton, Garry Lund, Rodger Gray, Chris Zoricich, Chris Riley, Robert Ironside, Alun Evans (Thomas Edge 56'), Wynton Rufer, Vaughan Coveny, Michael McGarry (Shane Rufer 80'). Coach: Ian Marshall (assisted by Kevin Fallon).

Referee: Terry Lunt (Maghull, England).

Notes: Conditions were cold with drizzle but the pitch was in a good state. The halftime score was 2-0. Goal marked x' was the first goal of the second half (apparently before the hour mark). Graeme Branch scored the seventh and final goal of the match. Tranmere Rovers played in the Football League Second Division (2nd tier of the English football league system).

surely that result must rank as one of our worst (if not the worst of all time?).

Some of the players in that team were half decent as well

It depends on how you define the worst result. But this one is definitely up there

These are the heaviest defeats we have had (in all games)

12-0 v England Amateurs, Dunedin, 1937

12-1 v England Amateurs, Wellington 1937

11-0 v Manchester United, Christchurch, 1967 (Man Utd team included George Best)

10-0 v Australia, Wellington, 1933

8-0 v Nottingham Forest, Nottingham, 1964 (Forest were in Division 1 at the time)

8-1 v Dundee, Dundee, 1979 (apparently the game that made Charlie Dempsey realise John Adshead needed some help and set about getting Kevin Fallon involved)

7-0 v Tranmere Rovers, Wirral, 1992 (Tranmere were Division 2 at the time)

There was also a 7-1 loss to a Bangkok XI in 1964

In terms of worst defeat I would argue that the 2-0 loss to New Caledonia in the 2012 Oceania Nations Cup semi final or the 4-2 loss to Vanuatu (who finished bottom of the group) in the 2004 ONC group stage, were the worst as these were competitive games and the consequences of losing were worse than the ones listed above as these were only friendlies .

To look on the bright side our biggest wins have been

13-0 v Fiji, Auckland, 1981 (Sumner got 6 goals)

12-0 v Samoa, Auckland, 1987

10-0 v Tahiti, Adelaide, 2004

9-0 v New Hebrides (Vanuatu), Nouema, 1951

9-0 v Fiji, Lautoka, 1952

10-2 v Central League Selection, Wellington, 1968

9-1 v Papua New Guinea, Auckland, 2002

8-0 v Tahiti Juniors, Papeete, 1960

8-0 v Indonesia XI, Christchurch, 1975

8-0 v Vanuatu, Auckland, 1992

8-1 v Vanuatu, Brisbane, 1998

7-0 v Samoa, Apia, 1987

7-0 v Papua New Guinea, Auckland, 1997

7-0 v Vanuatu, Auckland, 2001

it's always difficult to assess how strong or weak were were at that time and that tranmere result makes it appear as though we were pretty damn weak.

but positive results against celtic, werder bremen etc say the opposite

we didn't have many pros. but on the other hand, european teams had strict limits on foreigners compared to now

there's no doubt in my mind that many of the all whites from the early nineties would have picked up good pro contracts now

i mean malcolm dunford right!? what a beast of a player

Funny story emerged from this Tranmere match....

Late in the game, the well-beaten All Whites could hear this persistent solo chant coming from one of the stands...

"Bring on Peter Henry; bring on Peter Henry; bring on Peter Henry...."

Which was well weird, because Henry, who last played for the All Whites in 1987, wasn't even in the touring squad.

So a couple of the players took time out to visually track down the instigator of this repetitive but seemingly nonsensical chant... Turns out it was actually Peter Henry himself up in the stand chanting his own name.

They don't make All Whites like that any more.

* Peter Henry played a whole season for Hamilton AFC - had to be last to leave the changing room, and enter the pitch with his long hair wet through. Pretty sure he didn't pass the ball to anyone even once all season, just dribbled till he scored or lost it. A character.

Yes he was; in fact Utd were pretty much full strength barring Denis Law. Here's a link to the games v Auckland & New Zealand:

http://www.rsssf.com/tablesm/manutd-nz67.html

Some interesting players in the Auckland & New Zealand teams: NZ were captained by Graham Bilby and included Mark Burgess. Both were test cricketers/double internationals. Goalkeeper Arthur Stroud was the father of future All White Alan, also a goalie. Also John Legg played in both games: any memories Leggy? Did your love of United start here?

My mum who was a social worker and nurse in Nelson had some involvement in securing the "Say When" sponsorship for football in the 1980's.

She did some work with a Welshman from ALAC, the Alcohol Advisory Council of NZ, who was a big football fan.

Both were big Nelson United supporters. My mum was the team's first-aider in the national league in the late 80's.

The Welshman from ALAC was only too keen to channel funding to football.

Nelson United's national league team in the mid-80's were "Say When Nelson United"

The side's goalkeeper John Brydon owned a nightclub and so had to be very careful about the alcohol thing.

Peter Henry was certainly a legend to us football fans in the 1980's.

South African born I believe (white South African) and good technically with amazing dribbling skills.

Unfortunately, discipline seemed to let him down and he played only a handful of games for NZ.

And he scored a hat-trick (George Best scored two) including a goal that he and the United players remember to this day.

AW's goalie Arthur Stroud (father of future AW's goalie Alan) was wearing two jerseys in the cold conditions.

As he was feeling too hot, he proceed to take one off during the game, pulling it up over his head.

Bobby Charlton spotted Arthur with his jersey up over his head and chipped him from the half-way line.

Two of the NZ players reminisce about the game here:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/8706208/The-...

NZ  (and the Auckland rep team in the previous match which lost 8-0) was coached by Juan Schwanner, a fascinating character who immigrated here after a playing career at the very top level in his native Hungary, Brazil (at the mighty Flamengo) and Chile (Colo Colo). He was of Hungarian and Chilean parentage:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Schwanner

His Hungarian Wikipedia is more detailed:

https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwanner_J%C3%A1nos

He came to NZ after managing Club Brugge in Belgium and returned to Europe to manage Lucerne and FC Zurich in Switzerland.

Schwanner’s first match of ten in charge of NZ was against Manchester United at English Park in Christchurch in May 1967 and he went on to record five wins – including an 8-2 victory over Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur later that year.

According to Wikipedia, Schwanner returned to NZ to settle later in life and passed away in Auckland 8 May 2015 aged 94.

NZ Football obituary:

http://www.nzfootball.co.nz/vale-juan-schwanner/

He coached Blockhouse Bay in Auckland in the 1980's.

Mark Burgess on the Man Utd game:

"Schwanner also coached Auckland, and Burgess says he wanted the team to play positive, attacking football. He remembers Busby generously praising the approach....

Although New Zealand was perpetually on the back foot against such football deities, Burgess says Schwanner again implored them to attack. He deployed the now outmoded 4-2-4 formation..."

After Schwanner left in 1968, former Barcelona, Juventus and PSV Eindhoven coach Lou Brocic took over the All Whites in his second stint in charge (he'd coached the AW's previously in 1962-64):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ljubi%C5%A1a_Bro%C4%...

Brocic had been manager of Barcelona only a year before coming to NZ for his first spell in charge!

He then coached in the Middle East and Australia, passing away in Melbourne in 1995 aged 83.

I knew him reasonably well as I used to pick him up for football training twice/tree times a week. I worked in Kingsland and he lived in Sandringham so it was not out of my way. He had no car and it would have been impossible for him to get to training in Otatuhu ( Courier Rangers) He was a rebel but one of the most talented players I have ever know.

He left Courier and went to North Shore where the then coach Don Jones gave him a job at his service station in Albany  so he could keep an eye on him. I lost touch with him but I know he got divorced and his ex wife married another top player- Tony Jasper.

Interesting comments about Charlie Dempsey and his progressive thinking (for those days).

From my recollection that profit that Auckland made from the Man Utd game was invested in facilities at Newmarket Park - pity it all fell down the gully 10 years or so  later !

And so the latest UK Tour '92 programme to arrive...

I believe this was the third game of the tour (after St. Albans City and Celtic)? The details are:

Friendly
Feb 5, Southend, 2000
Southend United 4-2 New Zealand (Ian Benjamin 2' pen, John Cornwell 12', Andy Sussex 47', Keith Jones 50' - Heremaia Ngata 42', Billy Wright)

Southend United (England): Paul Sansome, Dean Austin (Heffer 70'), Chris Powell, Peter Butler, Pat Scully, Andy Edwards, Keith Jones, John Cornwell (Adam Locke 70'), Kevin O'Callaghan, Ian Benjamin, Andy Sussex (Mark Hall 50').

Coach: David Webb.

New Zealand: Clint Gosling (Michael Utting 75'), Robert Ironside, Garry Lund, Rodger Gray, Chris Zoricich, Michael McGarry, Chris Riley, Michael Ridenton (Jason New 46'), Heremaia Ngata, Vaughan Coveny (Thomas Edge 60'), Carl Jorgensen (Billy Wright 46').

Coach: Ian Marshall (assisted by Kevin Fallon).

Referee: David Axcell (Great Wakering, England).

Notes: Conditions were fine: cool and calm with the pitch in excellent condition. Wright's goal was scored "late". Southend United played in the Football League Second Division (2nd tier of the English football league system).

I also had a sneaky feeling he lived in Rotorua as a youth and maybe played for Suburbs there. I remember a team and work mate of mine having a chat to him on the sidelines at Newmarket Park one night, my mate had played at Suburbs. Henry was a character, loved watching him doing all of those tricks and dribbles with absolutely no consideration of anyone else on the pitch lol
