LOL.

One Facebook post saying tomorrow will announce an international fixture = "a huge PR campaign". Nowhere did it say it was a "MAJOR announcement". and "only Japan?" well it could have been Tahiti... this is the exact type of game we should have in every window.

Don't know what your issue is - Japan drew with the Netherlands last month so they certainly aren't some tinpot team from nowhere. Honestly get a grip, who the hell were you expecting to invite the All Whites to play them, I mean after their games against Mexico I'm surprised Japan, let alone any other World Cup team would be interested in playing them.

Colombia clearly.

Japan is an awesome game for us. Considering their WC opponents - Colombia, Ivory Coast, Greece - it looks like pure goodwill to reschedule the cancelled game. Japans Olympics team finished 4th in 2012.

Get Ramon to coach the AW's...........just watched him coach an ASB side of part timers nearly get a point against a pro Morrocan team with full international players. Auckland did not look out of place. They also did OK against Espanyol????....a team fielding plenty of Spanish first Div players.

Japan is a great game for the AW's...will be a tough game for us...but we should have Reid back.

All Whites to Participate in Historic Game - Last Event at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium Before Demolition

Every time the All Whites are scheduled to play in Japan, it seems to be followed by destruction, this time hopefully after the game is played.

The AW's - Japan game will be the last ever event at the Olympic Stadium, longtime home of the Japanese national football team.

http://www.nzfootball.co.nz/index.php?id=11&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=2658&tx_ttnews[backPid]=10&cHash=4c661d70ee

"The new match, the last to be played at the National Olympic Stadium, will act as a farewell to the home of Japanese football before the venue is demolished and rebuilt in time for the 2020 Olympic Games."

Built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics but due for demolition next year to make way for a new US$ one billion stadium for the 2020 Olympics Japan is hosting.

There is of course a strong New Zealand connection with the Olympic Stadium with Kiwi athletes winning several medals there in 1964 - most famously Peter Snell two golds in the 800 and 1500 m, John Davies the bronze in the 1500 and Chamberlain the bronze in the women's 800 m.

Rare colour footage of the stadium in the '64 Olympics - Snell wins gold in the 1500 m at 23.20, Chamberlain races at  22:

Was pretty pleased with the Japan fixture. Good time for NZ to pressure Japan about the promise to reschedule the 2011 match given that it must be difficult for us at the moment to get meaningful opposition, and I wonder whether the Japanese fans and team would actually quite like to have a more straight-forward fixture (relatively speaking) after what has been a very heavy schedule of high quality matches this year.

Just looked up their schedule and holy shit they have played alot this year. 19 matches according to wikipedia, including a number of very high quality European teams, Uruguay, Brazil, Mexico, Ghana and all of the top Asian teams.

Makes you realise once again how poor NZ's football fixture list has been, but that conversation has been done to death already.

Actually he CAN still change - those games he played for NZ weren't official competition games (v China, Mexico & Australia) so he can still change.

FIFA Statutes:

8 Change of Association

1. If a Player has more than one nationality, or if a Player acquires a new

nationality, or if a Player is eligible to play for several representative teams

due to nationality, he may, only once, request to change the Association for

which he is eligible to play international matches to the Association of another

Country of which he holds nationality, subject to the following conditions:

 a) He has not played a match (either in full or in part) in an Official

Competition at “A” international level for his current Association, and at

the time of his first full or partial appearance in an international match

in an Official Competition for his current Association, he already had the

nationality of the representative team for which he wishes to play.

 b) He is not permitted to play for his new Association in any competition

in which he has already played for his previous Association.

Whether he would want to is another matter. Surely he has better chances of being picked again by NZ than by Japan.

Oh lord. You even posted the answer and don't realise it.

He can't and before you tell me I am wrong, really think about it. Think about Vince Lia, think about Andrew Durante, think about Marco Rojas and ask yourself why Lia could not play for NZ, why Durante could play for NZ and why Marco was eligible to play for Chile until he played for us

Overseas

Vince Lia couldn't play for NZ because he'd already played for Australia in an Official Competition, and wasn't eligible for NZ at the time.

Andrew Durante never played for Australia.

Marco was eligible to play for Chile until he played for us in an official competition.

Until Fitzgerald plays for NZ in an official competition match, he can switch allegiances.

Incorrect.

You have to have held the other nationality at the time you played for the other country for a friendly to be able to change. Because Durante never played for Australia in that friendly, he thus was deemed never to have played international football (for anyone) so when he played his 1st international friendly, he had dual nationality and was not tied to Australia. If subsequent to Durante playing for us (for example) in a friendly only, he would still have been able to switch to Australia. Fitzgerald didn't have the option of choosing another nation like Marco thus, to make the switch to another nationality (Japan) he can't have ever had taken the field for NZ because at the time of that game for NZ, he was not eligible for Japan regardless if it was an official game or not. To be able to change nationalities, you much have had another one at the time you played in any international game (although competition games tie you to that country)

Article 17 Acquisition of a new nationality

Any Player who ... [assumes] a new nationality and who has not played international football [in a match ... in an official competition of any category or any type of football for one Association] shall be eligible to play for the new representative team only if he fulfills one of the following conditions:
(a) He was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
(b) His biological mother or biological father was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
(c) His grandmother or grandfather was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
(d) He has lived continuously for at least five years after reaching the age of 18 on the territory of the relevant Association.

He has played for NZ so the rest is irrelevant.

Wikipedia even mentions it

Unless geopolitical changes play a role, players are generally not allowed to switch nationalities if they have made senior appearances for one FIFA-recognised country in competitive fixtures. Friendly match appearances do not commit a player to one country (though a player is usually able to switch to another national side only if he held the nationality of the second country at the time he represented his first choice national team);

Wiki isn't the be all and end all. FIFA rules are - but what they mean on that wiki page by 'competitive fixtures' is a match in a competition, be it qualifying or the finals of a competition.

The reason Durante's eligibilty was up in the air (aside from the stupid games he played for Sydney) was that he was on the bench for an Australian game in an official competition. (It was a qualifying match for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup NOT a friendly).

If you're still not convinced, explain this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Cunningham

He played for Jamaica BEFORE getting US citizenship and subsequently playing for the USA. He could do this because he hadn't played for Jamaica in an official competition match.

So you tell me Wikipedia is not the be all and end all yet you point me to a Wikipedia link???

FIFA eligibility has been reviewed many many times since 2001. The rules then are nowhere near the same now.

You also forgot to bold the other bit. I have copied and pasted it for you

"Friendly match appearances do not commit a player to one country (though a player is usually able to switch to another national side only if he held the nationality of the second country at the time he represented his first choice national team)"

When he played the friendly for NZ, he did not have eligibility for Japan. I'm not quite sure now clear you need it Wibble but I'm done with it. If you want to believe it, you do so. It makes no difference to me. You also failed to note the Article 17 as well so......

Nowhere in the FIFA statutes is your quoted paragraph written.
Article 17? There also is no article 17. Try Article 7.

7 Acquisition of a new nationality

Any Player who refers to art. 5 par. 1 to assume a new nationality and who

has not played international football in accordance with art. 5 par. 2 shall be

eligible to play for the new representative team only if he fulfi ls one of the

following conditions:

 a) He was born on the territory of the relevant Association;

 b) His biological mother or biological father was born on the territory of

the relevant Association;

 c) His grandmother or grandfather was born on the territory of the

relevant Association;

 d) He has lived continuously for at least fi ve years after reaching the age of

18 on the territory of the relevant Association.

Article 5:

5 Principle

1. Any person holding a permanent nationality that is not dependent on

residence in a certain Country is eligible to play for the representative teams of

the Association of that Country.

2. With the exception of the conditions specifi ed in article 8 below, any Player

who has already participated in a match (either in full or in part) in an Official

Competition of any category or any type of football for one Association

may not play an international match for a representative team of another

Association.
