A SEPARATED A-League is imminent after Football Federation Australia told club owners that they were finally prepared to relinquish control of their competition.

No transition plan was revealed by FFA and an expansion criteria is now unlikely to be released prior to the unveiling of separation plan, though the split could happen in time for next season with A-League clubs set to work on a blueprint in coming weeks.

My question is, good or bad for the Phoenix' future in the A-League? Will our 4-3-3 license still apply if the clubs are in charge or will that idea be scrapped with the split between the FFA and the A-League?

Definitely good. For a start WelNix will be part of the governance of the competition, rather than subject to the FFA's whims. Even more importantly the other club owners were all in favour of the Nix staying and there isn't any business reason to ditch the Nix. Remove the Australian football politics from it and our future looks a lot more secure.

Now we just need to start fudgeing winning some games.

Thank you, that's very reassuring, Fudge the FFA and power to the clubs!

I missed this story when it first broke, but now I'm wondering why there is so little 'chatter' about it on this forum. Especially as it could take us out of the clutches of FFA  and be a club saver for the Nix.

If the FFA lose control of the competition, the salary cap will probably go and if that happens we won't have a chance of winning the thing.

You think that the majority of club owners want to scrap the cap?

I feel that if there is, it would be simplified - none of this FFA approving marquees (Pandev and Diamanti both supposedly being declined by the FFA, Pandev is crazy, he's actually won important competitions rather Ca$hill) - and also possibly no min, or lower min, cap spend which is currently 90% of salary cap.

which would be good. At the moment there may as well not be a cap, with all the marquees etc the FFA keep adding whenever Sydney or Melbourne need it.

Yeah I can see it being reformed, simplified and maybe raised but not scrapped entirely. The current system is bollocks anyway thougg

surely it'd just result in us getting screwed over by a different lot?

If FFA gives up control of the A-League, would the new owners have the power to grant the Nix a proper licence to match all the other clubs in the comp?

The FFA doesn't even have that right, every extension has to be signed off on by the AFC, NZF, OFC and FIFA.

But on the direction of the FFA? Surely if the FFA had asked for 20yrs it probably would have been ok with all parties involved. They must have all approved 10yrs because our participation in the 433 is between us and the FFA not the other stakeholders.

Ya, everything beyond the FFA, or a new indie body, is a box-ticking exercise.

I remember Rob Morison was on the radio when the whole extension saga was playing out that the AFC were the ones who suggested ten years.

AFC and FIFA just go along with whatever FFA suggest. Don't see that changing with IndyLeague

Is this on the way for FFA?

FIFA put a 'normalisation committee' into Argentina in 2016.

Be careful what you wish for... you may not like Lowy ... But ...

Those demanding change over here want to move to a full FIFA model... i.e. at least two divisions and P & R.... in time multi divisions ...

The current franchise / licence FFA system protects the Nix from having a bad year...  have a bad year and the cost to maintain a second division team will be huge ... and if you fall from the second division ... the cost at a third division to take part could be huge compared to revenue.

I don't see a way for the Phoenix to exist in a pro/rel system in Australia. Unless they allow our National League to act as a state league in the pyramid, pro/rel in Australia will be the end of the Nix.

If that's what FIFA wants, I'm against FIFA involvement and would prefer the (admittedly awful) status quo as the lesser evil.

They don't mind the US not having pro rel. If it is something that they want then it's going to be a ten year thing as Australia can't afford it.

It's the governance structure that FIFA have issue with, not the lack of pro/rel.

One of the outcomes with an expanded governance structure could be that the new governance will force in pro/rel, but FIFA aren't going to force that to happen.

AFC, on the other hand, place much higher expectations on FFA that they will have pro/rel in place sooner rather than later. But thats a seperate issue.

Yeah I see it as an inevitable outcome of the review and the direction football in Australia is progressing towards, FIFA stepping in (and therefore a change in governance structure) will simply accelerate the process.

I assume one of the owners like Henry or Rob as back office staff have stuff for the upcoming season to get ready for
