I've a few friends (Surprise surprise) whom also use Telstra Clears broadband and TV service. Is it just us, or do other users around the Wellington Region have any of the following porblems?

On almost a daily basis (sometimes more than once per day) had their TV decoder locks up and then reboots it'self. I have the Broadband modem also reboot usually once per day too. Has anyone else experienced this?

I use a Linksys wireless network with my broadband modem and it's brilliant. It also tells me when my broadband has been reset at Telstra-Clear by showing me error pages. Once I power down my broadband modem it resets and I get my service back.

Now I've had two broadband modems changed, I've had my TV modem changed twice, I'm on my third cable TV digital box. The faultment have come and checked out everything going back into the cable in the street. All their meter readings & testing are telling them that as far as they are concerned the problem is not in my residence, everything is perfect.

A faultman has told me that a few faultmen get together on a regular basis to discuss any technical issues and that the same problem is appearing quite often and it's all pointing towards the telstra-clear exchange.

It would be nice to recieve a e-mail or phone call from Telstra-clear to let me know they are having problems, even compensation & an apology. But I wont hold my breath. I know the main competition is offering an even sh*ttier service. ASDL modems are so historical and Telecon (NOT a typo)  have said ASDL2 is not going to happen very soon to residential customers. I wonder what Oracom are offering? I've heard some very good things on the grape vine.

What do others think??

up to a couple of months ago I would have agreed with you about the system falling over with regular monotony - could almost guarantee that at 6:50 pm the TV cable connection would fail (if I'd known TV2 were going to do a complete re-rerun of Friends maybe I wouldn't have got so annoyed ).

Having phoned Telstra for the nth time they did say they were in the midst of upgrading the whole network (no further details) and were experiencing problems.

They now seem to be sorted as far as I am concerned (tempting fate here) and have not had a failure for at least 4 weeks.

They are advertising a big re-launch in ?November, so maybe they are gearing up the system for that?

a couple of tales of failure in the early days;
the feed to the Kapiti Coast comes over the Paekak Hill Road - one weekend a keen farmer managed to blast a hole in the cable when out shooting; blacked out the whole of the Kapiti Coast. Saturn (as it used to be) then trenched the cable rather than just running it alongside the road - that's the cable beneath the tarmac strip you can see in the road.
Second time the whole network blanked out was during a southerly in Wellington - the above ground cable in Miramar was oscillating in the wind at exactly the same frequency as the signal it was carrying and this amplified transmission swamped and shut down the whole system.
Didn't allow for that, did they?
The loose cable strung between lamp posts in Miramar was tensioned up as a result.

I'm also with Telstra Clear, but far too technically inept to know if this is happening.  Plus the kids keep the TV on Disney, and the Internet on Bratz and Polly Pocket (etc etc) so I couldn't tell you what's happening.  Talking to people with xtra it sounds like we are better off.

I knew about the network upgrades (or maybe that was Vodafone), but they didn't effect me.

I heard a rumour that they're going to substantially up their cable speed in November (or whenever that upgrade is). Competing with ADSL2. Or showing that phone lines still give useless speed. But unless they have a really bad infrastructure, they shouldn't need to upgrade it that much...

its good for me my only complaint is switching between my laptop and desktop(to cheap to get a hub) sometimes it takes ages for the modem to reconnect.

TV is great once or twice it goes down but not often only get some of those due to the position of the sun messages
