haha...seems everyones on the wrong drugs tonight...as for assuming when was that ever a sensible thing to do...
What's really wrong with the Wellington Phoenix?
Alright, have hidden some posts. Please direct your anger back where it belongs and at the Nix manag
Don't let facts get in the way of your tears and angst.
If they have to play in Auckland a couple of times a season for free to keep the club alive then fudgeing do it, they told us all along 2-3 games would be outside of Wellington before anyone renewed you can't then whine because two of them are out of Wellington.
You can if
a) they are rescheduled at late notice so people's travel arrangements are affected
b) it's the last home game of the season.
Need to get the popcorn out for this thread. Forummers offering out other forummers. Classic.
Sounds interesting, sad I missed it before the mod hammer came out :(
Is this to transfer the club to Auckland??
Aside from the hard facts - declining attendances at Westpac being pre-eminent - it’s the symbolism of this that really sticks in my craw. I wouldn’t mind guessing that a fair majority of season ticket holders/members have left the stadium after many a game asking themselves why they bother. But many of them, including me, keep coming back.
But there’s something about this announcement that makes me think it could be some sort of tipping point. It’s basically the club management saying ‘eff you’ and in my mind this is much much worse than crap performance on the pitch, poor signings etc etc.
I really do think that this is a stupid, short sighted decision that the club may come to regret.
Well, we are unbeaten in Auckland.
Well, we are unbeaten in Auckland.
My view wouldn’t change if Dura scored 5, we won 10 nil, a recalled Cleberman make two brilliant goal line clearances, and Big Dadi smacked a penalty into the top corner.
Still a dumb idea.
Ok so, I can go to the Ticketek website right now and buy tickets for Phoenix vs City at Westpac stadium.

Are they actually going to be issuing refunds to those (if anyone) that have already bought tickets? Why have tickets for this been on sale if it wasn't locked in?
Something about this decision doesn't seem right - even for David Dome and the rest of WelNix.
Is it Fake news?
This is a decision that personally benefits me, however I'm still not happy with it. At all.
Good to see you on TV at Sydney Jaikin. Yes, agree a strange decision, needs explaining.
Well done Domey /clapping/
Yeah, a bit shark is an understatement. I think it would be totally appropriate for the YF to have a polite message on the banner and leave the zone vacated.
Fans are such a key stakeholder of the club and the sport. Should be treated with more respect than this.
Is this an effing joke? Words fail me.
Surely the guys in the zone new about this weeks ago but didn't say anything...coff..coff..Patrick
Not sure what you’re getting at, but weird singling Patrick out. Obviously I can’t speak for the hundreds of YF who stand in the fever zone, but nobody I know knew about it. Saw even Andrew Voerman (journalist) said on twitter that he didn’t see it coming at all.
As for the decision itself, while I don’t like games going to Auckland, I can understand why they do it with sponsors covering the costs - it helps keep the club viable for the owners. I definitely question the wisdom of moving this game so late in the season, the obvious increased angst this causes vs doing it at the start of the season doesn’t seem worth it to me when the club needs to be turning around it’s negative image.
I’m obviously also personally disapppinted at missing out on a game, though when season memberships were sold they did say 2-3 games were moving away - and with the Canberra game falling through, we did kind of get a bonus game out of that. The biggest disapppintment is in potentially missing Duras last game for the club, that would be a real shame.
The club owners are hanging on until the clubs run the A League and their licence is 1000% certain. Then the club has some actual value and they will sell it for millions. Until then they will keep making purely business decisions with little regard for how a football club needs to be run.
With regards to young players, there's obvious issues there. Some of which can probably be attributed to being in NZ and our lack of footballing culture.
What I was getting at was the quality of the players in NZ is generally fairly low given football isn't a popular sport. Kids don't grow up with an aspiration to be an All White, they want to be an All Black as that's popular culture.
With the WeeNix, the quality is poor. I'm not saying every single player will make it to A-league level, but they sit second to bottom of the Handa Prem. One would expect a development team (that often features players from the first team) of the best team in NZ (A-League being a higher level than the Handa Prem) would be in a better position. Obviously they're young and developing, but there aren't many you could say would genuinely be challenging for a place in the first team.

Are they recruiting the right kids? Ole seem to have better players.

I learned about this game yesterday, just like you.
Ha ha, you know who hasn't given up on the Nix? Paul Ifill, who is waging a running Twitter battle with some idiot anti-Nix troll :)
I'm shocked they have done this! I haven't been around as long as others here but this still feels like a kick in the teeth for Wellington based fans who have turned out each week this season when the players haven't turned up. To take the last game and potential Durantes last game away sucks.

I think some assume that the club actually communicates with their active support.
Sack Patrick
not really sure why i still bother, the last game of the season should always be in wellington with no exceptions, this is not a kick in the teeth more like a kick in the balls.
Seeing how some of the players have performed this season I am unsure whether "kick" is an appropriate word as they seem to have no idea what it means!

I have wondered whether we can sustain a team here in Wellington or NZ for the long term but then am steeled by the work of Western Suburbs/ Ole academy who are showing what can be done.
so have they communicated this game change to the media but not the members?
So in my frustration I emailed the man himself - he was quite passionate in his response, and has sworn me not to release the full content of his reply but in short the decision to play another game in Auckland came purely as a financial decision. Essentially to balance the books and keep the primarily Auckland based sponsors on board for the seasons to come. I was angry and Dome, but now I feel really sorry for him, having to battle with a board that wants to make a profit and try to keep us happy. all this when the team is failing on the field.
I don't feel sorry for him at all. Who owns and runs the friggen club? The owners or the sponsors? Wuwau would know before they signed any sponsorship deals what the club were about. The WELLINGTON Phoenix.
If Wuway don't like it, plenty of other sponsors out there. Sony were pretty good. If Wuway want something in Auckland, let them create and sponsor their own club up there. Shark phones anyway, My wife's one is always giving her grief.
On a serious note, the sponsors should have been made to understand that every season the very last home game is or should be in Wellington, it is the majority of fans last chance to farewell any departing players. Should Dura call it a day, I will be fudgeing ropeable that I missed a chance to say thanks at the ground he spent most of his career at.
No Patrick Conga this year, Australian fans for City will be pissed at having to change travel arrangements. Are Wuway going to compensate them as well? If it is for money only, Welnix better hope like hell that Dome's "20,000" show up.

No emails as yet Feverish in my account, don't know about others.

I'm not so sure about there being heaps of sponsors out there that will put their money and name on a team that is last and struggling in a league that doesnt seem to want them.

Really? How about those of us who have booked flights and accommodation to come to Wellington for the game?
I think Gourdie retweeted something about EPL "short-termism". I can't think of any better word than "short-termism" to describe infuriating loyal Wellington fans in order to keep sponsors sweet. Unless you really ARE considering moving the Phoenix to QBE.
At the end of the day the decisions arent just his, he has to answer to the board and they answer to the sponsors and us. If the books say we need more $$ then they travel to Auckland. Once that decision is made all other factors become secondary - besides if you've bought tickets to the last game in Wellington for this season I'd expect they'll be valid for the Aucks game, flights can be cancelled etc.
No, the board owns the club licence, sponsors pay the club an amount in return for shirt logos and mentions as a sponsor, they should not dictate to the club where they should play their games, unless the club has no balls. Sponsors know what they are in for BEFORE they sign the deal.

Flights can’t be cancelled. Well no, sorry they can - but there won’t be any refund.
Is that you David?
