If the Basin redevelopments ever happen I suspect there will be actions taken to make it a more versatile venue in order to hold more events and make more coin. This could benefit the Nix in the pocket if Westpac all of a sudden have competition across town. Of course this hinges on the redevelopments taking place but I know there is serious thought going into the idea of hosting multiple events in the same season. In the past it's been pretty unrealistic to even think about.

It's kind of a shit position. We aren't getting big enough crowds to be properly sustainable in Wellington which is forcing us to take home games to other cities; but in doing that we are potentially losing the ability to attract a few more (more likely to be long term) fans in Wellington.

... or maybe the slightly increased scarcity of games in Wellington will actually get more  turning out for the games that we do have
it's the hard core that are getting upset; the punter that is going to take your crowd from 7k-12k at home isn't bothered if there are 12 or 13 home games.
and you won't loose any but the most negative hardcore fans, and probably not even them; the hardcore  will still turn up, specially if the side is performing and playing decent football
I think the business case of the away games in three different locations should be strong and marketable for decent crowds as a novelty one game a year factor, and especially when combined with other events, like in Napier, AND especially if the Nix are doing well and playing "attractive" football.  the vids of last nights game on the other thread certainly suggest we are in for a more exciting style of football

Away games are also probably good for selling merchandise, I know I bought various things when they were in the Tron last.

What confuses me is a few years back we got 12-15k for a pre-season friendly in Hamilton. We have had nothing since, even a friendly would be nice.

Personally, it would be a pain in the arse. The location of the basin is bad, parking is bad. Would not want it there.

The 3 colleges in close proximity would love it. $5.00 a car and they could accommodate 3 x what the stadium could.

Does Wellington, specifically the council, actually want the stadium and the Basin in direct competition though?

Are there enough events to sustain both? If the Basin was a more attractive venue would it put the stadium's viability at risk?

You can park out on the street for free. I find it much easier and quicker to get a close park at the Caketin than the Basin. I must admit to being unfamiliar with those colleges, do they actually open up and allow parking for Cricket games?

That statement should be in the "shit nobody says" thread shouldn't it?

Unless the redevelopment involves kicking cricket out and turning the Basin into a rectangle then there's no way on earth it will ever be a suitable venue for football.

Romanticising for a minute though, turning it into a rectangle with a 15,000 - 20,000 stadium on it is a very attractive idea that would suit football and rugby perfectly. However, it would risk turning Westpac Stadium into a white elephant and there are far too many old-school cricket-heads around who would be crying about all the tradition and history at the Basin that would be lost.

Westpac hosts football and cricket in summer. Its all just chat at the moment but some of the powers that be feel the basin is under utilised as a small venue. That is why some feel it won't be in direct completion with westpac.

In a perfect world they would redevelop both. Make the Basin able to host ODI and 20/20s at night with better facilities and make Westpac a rectangular stadium with a roof of some kind (a covered walk way too).

how about you have seating on the grass at the basin????? I still say perfect, why do you need parking? bus, or catch a train and walk in - it aint that far. Or train in and the nix can put opn shuttles or the bus trip for free.

The stand is closed due to Earthquake and there are no lights so no night games. if they got those sorted it would be ideal. What does a full basin hold? 11,000?

Watching football at the Basin is awful.

The playing surface is significantly larger than Westpac Stadium and most of the seating in the ground does not have sufficient elevation to compensate. Trust me on this. It is so long since they had football there that nobody remembers just how far you actually are from the action.

The only way it could ever host football/rugby is if you kicked cricket out completely and did a total redevelopment to a rectangular stadium. But as I said before there is too much sentiment attached to cricket at the Basin for that to ever happen.

And redeveloping Westpac Stadium to be rectangular would just be too expensive.

I watched Leo Bertos play for Olympic at the Basin a few times. And you're right, it was dreadful.

It's like going to watch a game at your local park, but sitting in your car across the road.

Actually both of them are pretty much bang on 1.6ha but i guess the basin is more circular so side on you would be a little bit further away. The elevation is a key point though. I agree with all of what you said, it's far from good enough to host A-League as it is. People are entertaining the idea though (which isn't new really).

Yeah the pitch was always closer to the grandstand side. No one used to be on the tunnel side of the ground.

Interesting interview with the new CEO of the stadium. Sounds like he's at least listening to some of the issues...

Such an in depth article, it's a pity football and the Phoenix only get a small mention. Good to see that the problems are out there in the open now and can hopefully be addressed.
This is outrageous if true:

"There were claims that the caterer had charged the Phoenix Football Club about $4 for every bottle of Powerade or water it brought into the stadium."

I can see why Domey and Morrison seemed pissed off with Westpac Stadium at the meeting.
