I say: Bollocks. Here is the programme of Eastern Suburbs (see page 5) where the Chairman talks about the ~$100k entry fee. My understanding is that it's $65k to enter and $30k towards the TV coverage. Most SSP clubs will have public accounts, taking a quick look at the last two sets of TWs they show line items of $65k for "Entry Fee". Those two sets predate the TV deal.

That's about it really.

As posted by Patrick earlier, the $65K Entry fee covers cost of travel etc. And I presume the Phoenix pay that, as well.

But, and this is where you need to pay attention to the detail, I said "Wellington Phoenix are the ONLY domestic club that have to pay NZF to PLAY in the SS Premiership" & in a later post I stated that this was due to "us having professional youth players"

I have no reason to doubt the source of this information, & as I dont take a great deal of interest in the SSP, I don't really care what it costs to participate in it, unless NZF are charging the Phoenix extra, over & above what it costs everyone else!

every team has to pay to play. If they don't, they don't get to participate.

You are conveniently forgetting about "us having professional youth players"

yes. because it wasn't in your original post about it. Your original statement is clearly wrong based on NZF reg. I think we can all agree that.

Your clarifying stated might be correct. More than likely it is given your source.

Regardless, having a reserve side is clearly beneficial in keeping some players match fit and developing younger players. That ends up benefiting the first team. And I've seen no evidence that it is taking resource away from the first team.

I didn't mention it in my original post as I was using it as a demonstration of how resources are going to NZF & not into other areas that could develop the A-league team & improve our metrics which is a reason that has been given for the need to have the Traveling Circus.

I also didn't mention an Entry Fee.

Does the entry fee cover the cost of travel & accommodation for up to 18 players & officials?

Do any other teams in SSP pay NZF another fee for the right to have professional youth players PLAY in the SSP?

You are comparing two different things.

This is quite interesting (the extra fee). I have asked my sauce for more info, not that I'm doubting yours. Sounds authoritative.

It's not Travelling Circus related though so we should probably move it to the SS Prem thread. Or just change this thread title to "Circus".

QPR did for one but after a few years got it back. They had a youth team but not an academy.

Nice job.

Because you love the Nix, and more people love what you do than people that are dicks about it, and lots of people kinda like your kinda ok drumming?

That last bits a lie, everyone loves your kinda ok drumming.

Gah, off topic and apologies for that but Hatter having done some digging I can confirm from a sauce that everyone who enters the SSPrem pays the exact same fee. The Phoenix do not pay any additional fee. So your sauce was misleading you.

I would be very surprised if the information I was given is incorrect, but, I will bow to your apparently far superior source, & accept that comments from  Phoenix Admin, no matter who they come from, cannot be trusted, even when a comment is made in writing!

More entertaining than the last two Phoenix matches. I reckon if Hatter and I held a debate we'd get a bigger croud than New Plymouth too.

Wonder if the discrepancy between Hatter's source and others is related to Trillian, who, per that Suburbs programme Smithy posted, help every team except the Phoenix, so in practical terms, the Phoenix have to pay costs the others don't.

Probably a misprint. Smithy will have the true facts, as my source has been proven, beyond any doubt, to be full of the proverbial!

There is probably more truth in that statement than you realise. And possibly for the next few games too. (Insert Sad/Crying Smilie).

I'm not sure if you do this on purpose or just can't tell that you do it?

Anyway, obviously there is a difference between a) everyone pays a fee but the Phoenix can't get gaming machine funding because they're a professional club and b) only the Phoenix have to pay a fee.

You said (b) was true. I don't think it is.

By the way Hatter if your source a) works for the Phoenix and b) was having a huge whinge about how the world is so unfair and the deck is stacked against them and NZF are clueless then I reckon I can narrow it down to one man.

I haven't actually said that the Academy/Reserve thing is wonderful. I've said that the Phoenix are doing a lot more with a lot less. Is that for the better of the club? I haven't really thought about it to be honest.

It's a complicated question because some of the Academy/Reserve costs are funded from gaming machine money so if they vanished so would the cash; it's not like that cash can be immediately redirected to marketing. But maybe some of it could, I'm not sure. I guess it's inarguable that the club's focus would be entirely on the first team, and maybe they need that.

Last I saw someone drops 100k donation into a charity dodgily set up a while back and then they add with some pokie $ and then pay coaches and the likes of Rogerson, McGarry out of it.

Not sure what they see the benefits of the academy being- nor what it has to do with this thread!

Close but not quite correct.

What I said was "Wellington Phoenix are the ONLY domestic club that have to pay NZF to PLAY in the SS Premiership."

I made no mention of a fee!

It's irrelevant now though, as my source has been exposed as being unreliable.

So, who's looking forward to the game at QBE Stadium on March 4? I predict a much better crowd of 7109 ??

It's a long drive, anyone interested in accompanying me? Driving up early morning, go to game, driving back. Not sure about a stop for the night, depends on the mood. Another loss and grrrrrr. Just prefer to get out of Auckland asap. With the new Waikato expressway, this could be a shorter or quicker drive.

Ps: Even though I am one of the most critical of the Travelling Circus, for some strange reason I still feel compelled to attend. Perhaps it is to keep up the 100% attendence record or what? Who knows?

Can't wait to hear how many outings there will be next season for the Traveling Circus, especially after last nights magnificent crowd of 6285!

Four Traveling Circus games this season have had crowds totalling 22k. Is that good enough for Rob Morrison? People NOT buying season memberships next season due to loss of perceived value & lack of connection with the club. Was this the aim of the Traveling Circus?

I would be interested to see what targets were set for the Traveling Circus & if any of those targets were achieved. If they weren't achieved are there steps going to be taken to find out why they failed?

The winners are the people who live in the towns that the Traveling Circus visits, & it is great for them to see their club locally for once. But if they only go to that one game each year, it is surely offset by the Wellington based supporter who doesn't go & follow the Traveling Circus.

The people who reside outside of Wellington & choose to support a team from Wellington, do not have to support a team from a different City, but, they have made that choice to do so.

In my view, the Traveling Circus is a good concept, if it was working, but, its not. The crowds are terrible, the games are played on ridiculous days, where they are competing against other events, or having two games on consecutive weekends before Christmas.

If they are evenly spaced & promoted so that locals know that the game is on, & they are not competing against a bigger/better event on the same day, they could be succesful. But, it is glaringly obvious that over the past few years, the management of the Phoenix look at the Traveling Circus as a way of losing less money, as opposed to costing them to have a home game in Wellington. I'm no expert, but, is this the attitude of owners that say they want to expand the club? I don't think it is.

Due to the Traveling Circus not working any more, I feel it is time to scrap it.
