Side note - What a Shocker from Gillet! Never have liked him or Williams tbh. You can't call that a backpass, and then two penalties out of thin air. Also the amount of soft fouls ffs let the game flow dude if they're not making an attempt to protect the ball it's not worth the foul.

I am not sure if you saw it clearly, Djinksta.  Initially I had no idea what happened - OK, I was just getting a beer - and when I saw the side on replay I thought "how could they not call it offside", just what the linesman saw.  However, the replay from behind the goalposts shows clearly that Burns collected the ball from an opposition player, not from a Nix player.   Backpass or not, the last person who touched the ball before Burnsie was a Melbourne City player, and that means he (Burns) can't be called for offside.

I may of course be mistaken, but the default rule is that you are never "offside" until your team member plays a ball forward to you while you are behind the enemy lines. This was not the case here, so no offside.

The lino raised his flag and from a distance it looked like offside. When the goal was scored I was waiting for the ref to take play back to a FK.

Yeah I don't think you can blame the lino. From 40 feet away, you could easily mistake that for a through ball if you are not watching intently. I have to be honest in saying I have not see the replay where it was shown to be a back pass, only what I have read on here. Live I thought it was offside. If we are relying on replays, I think its fair enough that he probably got that wrong. I guess we have to thank the ref for once for getting it right.

I never saw what happened at first either but looking at the replay i didn't think it was a backpass by Paartalu, but an attempt to intercept the pass. Its an interesting thing to talk about really, because i would have thought that had that made it to the goalie he would have been within his rights to pick it up.

I reckon the law is a bit iffy in this area as i couldn't find any concrete evidence, but looks like it was down to Gillets interpretation. I'm not sure if Mikeys pass was intended for burns but i would have thought that if it had been that he'd have been flagged offside. Ah well we got the goal which quite often goes the other way, but if i was a MebH fan i'd have felt a little aggrevied.

That's what I saw too, from side-on.

In contrast, the replay from behind the goal-line showed exactly what Gillett saw - the last person to touch the ball before Burns was an opposition player, so Burns was not off-side.

It does matter if you are in a potential off-side position as long as the ball is given to you by the opposing team player.

Oh, please....

And Messi's no good because there are some games he doesn't score in.

"Man City to dump Aguero because twelve goals isn't enough."

Mourinho to send Diego Costa on loan because "he should be scoring more than eleven goals in thirteen games."

Man Utd to put Rooney on transfer list "because he hasn't scored much lately."

"Melbourne Victory to let go of Merrick because he did not get them another HAL title"

.... oh, wait a minute....

Rumour going around the Zone is that this may be Jeremy Brockie's last game for the Nix. Off to Sth Africa. #WELvMCY

Very strange... today I heard a rumour that Moss might be off to South Africa.

Here's some interesting info connected to this - both Brockie and Moss have a South African "business manager" Reaz Moorad (long domiciled in NZ) - an interesting character who has been a top businessman plus is a highly-qualified goalkeeping coach with a background in South Africa's national league before immigrating here:

Might be just a matter of covering all angles.

It's probably something a snob football analyzing writer has to write. I like to quote Otto Rehhakles, after winning the European Championship with Greece in 2004 (playing some ugly football)

That whole thjng was a rought. Poor effort imo. You'd be lucky to get a ball through that hole it was so small. As if the Phoenix owners would miss 10k. Probably equals their dinner tab with a bottle of Dom 1953.

On a positive note, does Burns' s goalmean he has broken his 1 on 1 contest?

After Burns scored the first penalty, Dewhurst took about 30 seconds to realize it needed to be taken again. Is he at the stadium or at an Auckland studio ?

Not really. Very lucky for the 1st goal, fluffed a sitter, nice finish for his second, converted a penalty. Would hardly say he was fantastic. He has already cost us points this season with missed one on ones, and I am betting he will again.

I am not saying we should drop him or anything dumb like that, just pointing out that he has hardly been emphatic so far.

You've got the wrong end of the stick on the first quote. I'm fairly certain that he was talking up the Nix, saying that we were still miles better than City even though we weren't overly good in this particular game (I think we can all agree that the first 30 minutes were fudgeing sharkhouse).

It wasn't a mistake from Dewhurst, I was talking to Thomas Ben after the game and he said that the shirts definitely are going up for auction. So unless I misheard (which was entirely possible given it was the 10th pub...)

Just because they also infringed doesn't mean that we didn't infringe. More telling for me was the City penalty, there was a City player encroaching just as far as the Nix players are in this screencap.

It should be a focus on process, if you get the process right then good performances are repeatable. If you get a result, or a string of results, it may not be down to actually having a good processes in place and thus not repeatable long term.

As a keeper, QFT. We train to be able to psych out and anticipate the striker in a 1-on-1 situation. And Redmayne had a pretty good game, as far as I saw - he was let down by stupid mistakes in defence. (Must say he actually looked a bit better than Moss on the day.)

I think he's just prone to getting extremely carried away. So as soon as it's in the net he's going nuts and paying no attention whatsoever to what's actually happening.

This trait also manifests itself in his ridiculous hyperboles. If I had a dollar for every time he's referred to some sharkhouse aleague player as "world class"...

That's quite sobering at first glance but only a trend so far and not an actual record (that would be it at the end of the season). However, this can still be turned around by van't Schipp if he buys some new personnel.  Clearly getting a few games with David Vila in JamTard kit was a "nice to have" and might have attracted extra punters, but a seasoned pair of centrebacks might have helped their season more for less $$$.

Mourinho to send Diego Costa on loan because "he should be scoring more than eleven goals in thirteen games."

Man Utd to put Rooney on transfer list "because he hasn't scored much lately."

You make it sound like every time a player has a one on one, they should put the ball in the net. There's still a goalkeeper to beat...

But he has 0 / 6 which is terrible for a striker... the two he has had got from them came from lucky rebounds that fell at his feet after failing to beat the player in the first place.

Burns is quality, but his 1 on 1 shooting is average at best so far this season.
