Bar some early rustiness (Devere early on then Davila when he came on) I thought we looked pretty good in possession.  New comers Lewis and McGarry were passing with confidence, Muratovic not so much, but getting that goal hopefully adds to his confidence.

Out of possession I thought we have lots to work on. Both there goals were great strikes but poor defending by us. No one putting pressure on there new kid for the first and we looked totally disorganised for Bratans free kick goal. Were they trying to form a wall? Who was taking charge of the situation? Didn't do our selves any favours.

Our attack not surprisingly improved alot when Davila and Hemed came on. Keeping in mind sydney conceded the least number of goals last year and there side is mostly unchanged it was always going to be hard to score against them. Especially once they sat deep.

First half we were pretty predictable in attack, trying to use Sotirio as an outlet and Payne putting in crosses from the right. But encouraging signs as the game wore on. I think Davila and Hemed are going to score alot of goals this year.

Also though Riddenton had good impact when he came on. I feel like we have generally good ball playing depth in this squad, but lack genuine goal scorers. Its going to critical that Davila and Hemed stay fit. I can see why Talay is being careful easing them in.

Did anyone else think that Bratans stud high tackle on Sotirio should have been a red card. (If it was Rufer with a tackle like that on Ninkovich !!!). Also thought the shove by Zuollo on Hemed in the box warranted a second look by VAR.

So a typical match against Sydney then. Played well in patches, didn't get the rub of the green. Lost narrowly but showed promising signs.

I'm sure if these examples and the hand ball in the box by SFC been the other way around there would have been two penalties and a red.

I'm really intrigued by some takes in this thread Re Ridenton.. Thought he was really forward thinking in the final 15 and shifted the ball quickly and with purpose. I was actually quite disappointed with Rufer/Devlin in that last third. Really slowed the play down and tented to go backward or sideways rather than forwards. Really hope we get behind Ridenton this year and he doesn't turn into a scapegoat like Sotirio tends to be on here...

Agreed. Thought he did very well for the short time he was on, and more creative/attacking than I remembered him.

I also agree on Ridenton.  However, the positive look of him was all very well with the short time he had on the pitch. In the past my only criticism of him (when he played with us under Ernie) was that he floated in and out of the game a bit. Once he plays a full game it will be easier for us to assess his progress as a player.

Anyone know what the attendance was? Hard to tell with few TV shots of the crowd. The commentators talked over the stadium announcement of the crowd number.

Not a club record, funnily enough.

Was hoping may still have been more than Western United got for their first home game this season at Geelong. Sadly a bit short.

Don't think the eventual lifting of Covid restrictions will help WU crowds much. New stadium home for the Bitumens might though.

With Covid-19 crowd capacity restrictions still in place in Victoria, the official crowd attendance at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong was 5,128.

Sadly most seemed like Sydney fans, expectedly. The cheer for Brattan's goal was unreal

FOX Sports was very sporting in showing various Nix fans in the crowd, including Devlin's parents.
