we were cut open for the last goal. a sign that we had pushed up to chase the game. While the ref isn't the best, nor his assistant who gave the offside for hoopers goal, we gave them calls to make. Sydney are still an inch more clinical than us. shark to take, but also lots of positives to take away. Especially, that we are easily the 2nd best team in this league now and really not far off the best.

I think we were the better team until Beath kicked us in the head with the sharke calls.

See stats: Better passing, more possession, more shots on goal.

Wow that was a bitter game... We got robbed tonight. Denied a clear penalty and our 2nd goal was ruled out.

On the other hand Sydneys 2nd and 3rd came from a stray pass and lack of concentration. So we shot ourselves in the foot, especially giving away that pen. All 3 Sydney goals were gifted to them from us.

Having said that, I am very happy with the performance by the Nix. We've been the better team for most of the game and caused them loads of trouble. Away from home after a long break against the leaders.

If we play like this the rest of the season we will dominate!

I hate to blame the ref.... but WTF.

If Davilla's was a penalty then Grants had to be as well, simple as that. both hit the chest and rose onto the arm. The offside call for Hooper was poor.

On a positive, I though Fenton was very good first game back and I was happy with how McCowatt put himself about.

I hate Beath!

like it or not, but with VAR we win this game, simple as that.

Agreed, but I would rather lose and have no VAR, I hate VAR

these were the kind of decision VAR was brought into correct, and given we have been consistently on the wrong end of shot reffing calls it has served us well. A win tonight and we are well on the way to securing second, and it makes a massive statement to the rest. ut thanks to the same ol' shark/bias reffing decisions we get robbed. Not sure how anyome can accpet that

BT Sport has just cut off the interviews here in the UK.  Can someone please say whether Talay brings up the sharke calls etc in his interview.

Turning point was the pen to sydney. New rules state if the ball comes off the body and hits the arm, then no hand ball.

Marinovic was used to us controlling possession and was halfway up so as to be ready for the next corner

Wish we had Australian coverage post-match, they'd be blowing up over the decisions, meanwhile nobody on this NZ coverage knows the handball rule.

Slater and co know nothing about the new handball rule. Hasn't even been mentioned well into the wrap up.

We score that and we are 2-1 up.  Seconds later we don't conceded because the situation is different.

Do we still lose or draw? Dunno, but bloody hell i feel shafted.

If the league gets called off because of COVID and that game is all we are left with after waiting so long I'll be gutted.

Don't worry, I think they'll wait at least until we get shafted in the next match before calling it off.

This highlights that VAR is now a vital component of the game to enable correct decisions to be reached

Well that sucked. I can’t believe how appalling bad A-League officials are. How many times have we been shafted by Beath? That was real home town refereeing. Every important decision bar one went Sydney’s way.

On the positive side we gave the best team in the A-League one hell of a game and should have beat them. We will beat plenty of other teams in the rest of the comp. I am really looking forward to the rest of the season. Apparently the finals will have VAR....but knowing A-League officials we will likely to be shafted again even with VAR

I have watched lots of soul less European football over the last few months. Dead, empty stadiums with canned crowd noise. This game was great, probably better than a lot of the shiite I have seen. Lots of skillful play, passion and it was great to hear real people in the crowd.

I don’t think we can be too hard on Devila. This is what happens when you have to play someone who has spent two out of the last four weeks locked in a hotel room. He will be better for this hit out. We need him firing at the business end of the season.

I think the Nix are on a great trajectory. They will be fired up by this loss. They look like a good well balanced, well coached side.

VAR does make mistakes and the decisions seem more egregious because VAR had so much more information and time to make them and they cost us the natural flow of the game. But overall the decisions are more correct and that's invaluable for an underdog team, which the Phoenix will always be in this league. We can beat a team like Sydney by 1 goal but it's too much to have to effectively beat them by 3 to register the win.

I know it's a tired old argument this VAR one, and yes it might be possible to make an argument that it makes for a more level playing field for underdog teams (I don't think it actually does). But in the long run does VAR enhance the spectacle of 'the beautiful game' or detract from it? It's resoundingly the latter in my opinion.

1)as we have seen, plenty of errors are still made with VAR

2)it was so nice to not have the flow of the game constantly interrupted.

This

I still don’t like VAR. I also don’t think VAR would have come down on the side of the Nix for everyone of those marginal decisions especially with incompetent A-League officials running it. VAR possibly would have given Rufer a red for a high boot against Bratton. They have done that in the past for that sort of thing. Also as much as I hated Beaths decisions the game did flow nicely. At least the players didn’t have to keep standing around in the sleet waiting for VAR to make up their mind LOL.

Not true about more shots on goal(12 to 5) All those stats mean nothing if you can't win. An EPL game this week Arsenal/Liverpool shows that. Shots 3/24 and possession 33% to 67% and Liverpool got beaten.

Disappointing to have the game end like that. Brain explosions for Davila and Marinovich were completely avoidable, felt like we were more dominant throughout the game and the boys looked pretty good after a few months off. Don't know how the mullet man didnt get penalized in the first half, could see that handball from a mile away.

Im not sure the refs were much better when we had VAR...I do enjoy how the game is more flowing without it.

Anyway, hopefully some future calls go our way,  good to have footy back!

dont think they are playing under 2020-2021 laws as the season started before 1 june.
We do locally as our winter season started after that.

If the  Ref errors made in the game were made by VAR no doubt  you would be banging on about how poor VAR was and  to get rid of it.

VAR has meant that in the overwhelming majority of cases the decision has been checked and got right. I much prefer that to this feeling today.

This next month of games is going to be a bit of a trial on the merits of not having VAR and I'm sure there is going to be lots of discussion.. So far the score for me is VAR 1 - Chris Beath 0.

I've just been quietly following this season with increasing pride in the team. It got to the stage that, pre-Covid-19 stoppage, I was taking it for granted that we'd just breeze past teams like Victory, and we did.

Last night wasn't a great result but it's still good to have a shot at something in the finals, after so many disappointing years.

Last season was great too, I'm not forgetting that, but this year just seems like something else.

I'm off today to find some Phoenix gear...but don't call me a fair-weather fan! It's just that I've never looked too hard for any Phoenix gear, honest! I want something low-key, like what the only other known Phoenix fan here in Katoomba NSW has, it's just a black T-shirt with the logo on the front. No advertising, etc.
