The I-League finishes in May, we won't hear much from him until then I think. Not very professional to start talking about your new club, whilst playing for your old one.

the interesting thing for me is to see how the new coach uses hernandez.

Ive always said that our strikers all seem better when they are partners in a front 2 - huysegems especially.
So that would leave hernandez in behind, Ifill and one other wide, and one spot for a DM

So if Hernandez is given total freedom, were gonna need a good DM to control that midfield

Very good assesment. I hope the club looks for one along with a RB & a LB - although Rowe did make a decent case for himself.

I think Ifill's spot is dependent on what shape he arrives in. If its a round shape then we are doing it to ourselves by looking at him as a starter.

Isn't Ifill trying to get a short term contract in Asia to keep his fitness level up for next season here??

Hadn't heard that before. Not really sure that would be the best thing for him. Better off with a rest while keeping up his own fitness I would have thought.

LOL. One remark I heard the other week was when Ifill got subbed and started his warm down stretches, was a fan yelling out "You had to have done some exercise to do a warm down".

Why don't we try signed that Kiwi striker at Southampton?

Baranowski is gonna have to get Hernandez and Ifill both super fit, and also manage their workloads.

The one thing we dont want is two big boys in midfield. Although maybe we could find out what happened to Charlie Miller to get him in there as well

Jeez, this is NZ, we've got sports scientists coming out of our ears! if we can't find the right programme that gets him ripped for next season would be unbelievable. Sending him to play in Asia (or anywhere else) would be risky, injury-wise.

Wouldn't mind if he did a Dura and went to Aus in the off season, maybe loan to CCM for a few ACL games or something.

Dura did that as a fit 26? year old with no History of Injuries.
I would much rather he be wrapt in a big spongy bag of cotton wool for a couple of months with a programme to keep him fit and to hopefully clear himself of niggles.
As a player who will be almost 33 when the season starts who has a history of injuries it would be foolhardy to send him off to play through the off season

Been doing a wee little bit of research for aussies overseas we could look at. Mainly because we only have 1 import spot left. And im sick of hearing people say that there are no decent aussies around for us to pick up. We got Gameiro on loan so theres one example of picking up an A-League standard player. Here are some names I've been collating (mainly looking at CMs & RBs):

Rostyn Griffiths - Defensive Midfeild - China - Loan move in China Off season
Ryan McGowan - Defensive Midfield - China - Loan move in China Off season
Jonas Salley - Defensive Midfield - China - Loan move in China Off season
James Holland
- Defensive Midfield - Austria - Unlikely to Leave Europe
Carl Valeri - Defensive Midfield - Italy - Current Socceroo & has big reputation
Matt McKay - Center Midfield - China - Loan move in China Off season
Erik Paartalu - Center Midfield - China - Loan move in China Off season
Steve Lustica - Center Midfield - Croatia - Has turned down a Roar return apparently
Neil Kilkenny - Center Midfield - England - Getting game time
James Wesolowski - Center Midfield - England - Club Captain
Massimo Luongo - Center Midfield - England - Young being sent out on loan from Spurs
Giancarlo Gallifuoco - Center Midfield - England - Youth at Spurs
Andrew Marveggio - Central Midfield - Holland - 2nd Div dutch side
Adam Sarota - Central Midfield - Holland - Not starting as much as he may want
Mark Bresciano - Central Midfield - Qatar - Earning big dollars
Jackson Irvine - Central Midfield - Scotland - May want loan move
Luke Wilkshire - Central Midfield / Right Back - Russia - On decent dollars
Ryan Edwards - Right Midfield / Right back - England - Reading U21 team (Son of Alistair)
Frane Vladislavic - Right Mid/ Right Back - Croatia - Young and untested

Obviously some of these guys are relatively unlikely. Some are current socceroos. But to be frank - the other A-League sides are signing guys like these so we need to be too.

And a lot can depend on the coach we get too - for example Mulvey knew Lustica so convinced him to come over to Roar.. Picking up a coah with connections in these areas could be crucial

I disagree with you on that Tv, the club as a proposition seems to appeal to players, they love the city and the fans....finishing last this season won't help but if the management can put forward a clear direction and desire to win trophies then I'd say we have a fair chance of nabbing any of the above - if we wanted them of course.

As a player, would love to have Port-a-loo from that list above all else. Good solid passing DM. would have to pay pretty big bucks would imagine. Not so sure if he would pass the "no cocks" rule though

with the exception of maybe 4 or 5 of those players they are all playing at a higher standard and being paid accordingly.

ive mentioned i would try and sign billy celeski and liam miller (taking last foreign spot) while trying my best to retain gamiero.

if we're able to offload totori somehow then i would look at signing another foreigner obviously - someone who is able to cover both both flanks.

Yeah will be interesting to see how the coach wants to use his only import spot.

Just for other's reference, heres a few links of Aussie players abroad, and A-League contracts:

if they are playing at abhigher level and getting paid more than the nix can afford then it's unlikely the nix would be chaisng them. The club has to want the player to come - which includes being able to afford them before the player (agent) gets to make the call of playing here. I read your initial post as saying that none of the afore mentioned players would want to play here - there are obviously many factors involved besides a player's desire to play in a particular team.

That's actually an interesting issue for the new coach because of the lack of import slots. The Phoenix will need to appoint someone with A League pedigree if they want to lure good Aussie players to the side. I hate to say it but Wellington is not one of your glamour destinations (all complaints about arrogant Aucklanders on a postcard to JV please) so a lot is going to depend on who the new coach is to attract any good Aussie players who have options elsewhere.

Unless, of course, you decide to stack the new Nix with Kiwi players, hmmmm?

You’ll need an account to join the conversation!
