Our selling point is clearly Ernie the Giant Chicken. WELL DONE WELNIX, FINGER-ON-THE-BUTTON MARKETING THERE.

Seriously, I suggest we let the Firebirds have Nixie on a loan deal. He'll do wonders down at the Basin and stop annoying us.

I don't think Ernie is "annoying".  He's not like most mascots in other codes where they are running up and down the sideline during the game.  He is there for the kids (who, from my experience, love him) pre-match and at half time but then hides away during the match.  He also seems to be a hit when roaming the streets.

Sure, he shouldn't be our only marketing tactic, but to label him as annoying is unfair.

Edit: I do think that there is so so so much work that needs to be done in marketing.

He is annoying. That is completely fair. But as long as he stays away from me and entertains children he's fine by me. Although I have seen some kids completely terrified by him.
I do think Nixie needs a his own chant though. I was thinking like "11 herbs and spices" repeat or "I feel like chicken tonight"?

Its not like you are forced to look at the chicken... There have been some times when he has been down in front of the Fever Zone and I haven't even noticed until the Fever start chanting something about the chicken. If you don't like it, then don't look at it.

I think it has been wonderful in terms of marketing. Nixie has effectively been the public face for the Nix in town in game weeks, as he gets out and does promo for the matches in the week leading up to a game. The club can't put players down on Lambton Quay every lunchtime for obvious reasons, so having a marketing tool that is probably more recognisable than any of the players is a huge tool.

Why not? A massive chicken costume is unique, whereas the players are just another person on the street. I doubt many people would notice Lia or Dura if they walked past them, whereas you can't miss the huge chicken.

Players/ the team representing the area in a way. That's significant.

According to another thread on these forums Manny Muscat is a massive cock so it maybe he is Ernie the Fighting Chicken!!!

I guess what he is meaning, is it would be ideal if our players were recognized on the street for being stars of the nix.

nixie is a cool way to get the club recognised. It is not a marketing campaign though. The Welnix crowd are all solid businessmen right, so where in the manual does it say "on game week - make no noise about the game", or "heres a sure fire way to get noticed, make no noise about the team except in football circles".

And "if you want more people to come along to your teams games, threaten/blackmail them"

Or "if you want to increase your crowds at games, criticise the style of football your team plays halfway through the season, and call it dull"

(The welnix guide to owning the bestest football team in the world - in stores now!)

To be fair, if they can get a system in place, they probably will. Still, it seemed like one of those things that was worth continuing, kept the fans engaged etc.

if, and it's a big if....Gareth and his men seem to be thinking of profits only at the moment, there is minimal money been spent on real marketing of the team,. no money being spent on star players - and we get dished up shiote week in week out and then we are scolded for not showing up. What still annoys me is that noone thinks about the fact at our home games we have 50-100 away fans tops, every other team can expect the away team to bring a few thousand with them.

Adelaide had about 15 in Newcastle last night.
The only games where there are "a few thousand" away fans are the melb & Syd derbies.

Sydney FC is great with their away support, they have loads turn up. I am always very jealous that they have 18/27 games in NSW.

Jets & CCM don't have much of an away following. WSW seems to have a decent away support to the NSW games. But the reality is that away support in the A-League is rare because of the expense involved. Most sets of fans pick 1-2 games a year that they go en masse.

Travel Logistics play a massive part too. No direct flights between Adelaide and Newcastle. The majority of WSW fans would be at least an hour away from Sydney Airport. Perth is so far away from anything!

Almost everything coming out from the club feels negative currently and the thought they have written the season off is shocking. Sydney were rock bottom but they are still positive about their play off chances. The league is very tight, 2-3 wins in a row and your back into the top 6.

I understand they want everyone to have a realistic outlook, but that doesn't sell the product. You don't see Lotto advertising that only a few people can win and almost certainly it won't be you. The club needs to come out and say that we still can make the play offs, and we can still win the grand final. Sell the dream, not the reality.

Yep. As a neutral deciding where to spend your dollars, welnix and the club are currently advertising the team by saying things like:

"Wellington isn't a feasible place to have the team"

"We play dull and unattractive football"

"Our season is written off, don't bother showing up"

Nice work guys.

With the new playoff system, all you need to do is to scrape into the top 6, and then pull of three good performances in a row and you will win the grand final. Our aim at the moment should be the top 6, and to be honest, all we need to do is slightly improve to be there, as there are some teams playing much worse football than us in the league.
