A different market then ours so probably not the correct call to ditch the academy but interesting

Yeah, very interesting. Brentford currently 5th this year in the Championship too and potentially not far off being involved in promotion battle.

Are players like Piscopo, Davila and Steinmann all 'Brentford types' of one kind or another (ie, clearly talented, but for one reason or another haven't had their break)?

Davila too old if we're going by the article, Steinmann potentially too.

The article has two paragraphs that talk about not being preoccupied about a players age and about picking up late developers using Vardy as an example in a caption. Then a few paragraphs later goes on about only focusing on youth. And yet later talks about their approach being vidicated by one of their teams picking up Tim Sparv (who was 27) and then contradicts itself again about not wanting to sign older players. It's a bit confused.

By late developers I think they mean not giving up on young players too early - they give an example along the lines of, 'just because someone doesn't fully make it at 21 doesn't mean you should automatically give up on them as they may turn out to be a late bloomer.'

On the other hand they also talk about treating players as financial assets who need to bring value to the club when they leave, and again give an example of not wanting to bring in a 29-year old striker because his re-sale value would not be worth it for the club.

The Sparv example was only an illustration of where value can be got (i.e. which leagues to look at for good players at low cost) rather than direct example of Brentford's policy

Big difference with us is they were losing kids at 16/17 to bigger clubs which hasn't been happening to us. As the only New Zealand professional club, our academy has ability to get young talent to join us in mid/late teens, sort of opposite to them. Our biggest natural advantage in our league is being able to play New Zealand players as locals which other teams can't, so makes even more sense to develop that advantage as much as possible.

Interesting article though, and seems over there they need to look at how developing young talent can be made more worthwhile for such clubs.

Yep, I don't think the Brentford approach would work for us, as you say, our natural advantage is NZ players as locals.  But it was an interesting article about doing things differently from the pack, and truly looking where your strengths and weaknesses are.

Definitely will have to bring in defence cover next season with McGing, Scott seeming to not be up to scratch and Cacace likely to move.

The club tried to sign Stamenic last off-season but obviously it didn't happen. It will be interesting whether that changes after this season.

Think that Rogerson waka has sailed, don't see him being a part of the Phoenix set up again any time soon. JHS I would love to see being given another shot, but with Talay playing a back 4 that reduces his chances somewhat. Lewis is another who is probably on the radar, especially if bringing Stamenic in doesn't work out again.

Rogerson looks out of place in the ACFC setup let alone a Phoenix set up. He likes the ball at feet and roll how foot over it and is more a wide player. ACFC use wide ranging wing backs up and down the line and it squeezes him infield where he doesn't do much as there is no room on the postage stamp sized Kiwitea St

Because of this, clubs will see him as regressing and he wont go anywhere

Probably just waiting around until he turns 18 so he can sign overseas. Has he had trials anywhere previously?

The olympics will be huge for Rogerson and co to gt themselves noticed by the NIX and others.

Rogerson seems more driven after his Germany experiences... or at least a little more mature.

You can understand why he'd rather play TWs, but I guess also sends the message to Uffie that the Phoenix isn't the be-all end-all to Marco for him to make it as a pro footballer.

If Marko's dad is looking after him, he'll be making sure he gets a good deal. He's a shrewd deal maker, and a very proud dad. I knew him years and years ago, and if the kid is anything like his old man he'd be determined as hell to succeed.

Bevan I’d like to see at the Nix maybe as an IR - not saying we should sign him, don’t think he’s good enough, would just be interesting to see what his excellent movement offers. And if Davila goes we need some semblance of a penalty taker

Rogerson would also be cool, and wouldn’t be against his signing - same with Lewis who I could see become a starter if things go his way. Cheeky redemption arc for the kids?

Rogers not good enough I’m sorry to say. hard worker but think he’s reached his ceiling.

Schrijvers would be very cool though McGing seems like he can offer something

Stamenić, jfc i’d give anything to sign him but feel he might be better served in Europe.

Rudan bought Stensness over last year and that worked out pretty good for NZF.

He also brought Taci Kumsuz over, which turned out to be a waste of 1000 national league minutes, as he wasn't even NZ eligible.

When does the Indian League finish? Must be soon? What are the chances of getting Roy on a guest contract? He'd take us to the next level.

We have already had this kind of discussion when Rojas was mooted, and not sure it is worth wading back into this particular pond.

He is a poor fit in that team. He wants to play ball at feet and roll his foot over the ball in the channels. At Kiwitea where its the size of a backyard cricket game, he gets pushed infield and there is no room for him to do that so he is ineffective

(not withstanding that I am not a fan in the first place)
