Think also they supported him very well with Lily's death and he'd appreciate that and would probably like to stay. Saying that, we supported him well when Uli Jr was born with covid, etc. so who knows. Doubt we can afford him though.
Unfortunately I'd say he'd be more likely to go to a big club in Aus before us. Even Auckland over the Nix I'd say.

Since Welnix took over I don't think we've ever picked up a top class A-League player who're still in their prime. We'd much rather save some money and spend on overseas players down on their luck.

That being said, Davila likes our club and likes our fans - that was very evident when they first played us after Lily's passing. I'm sure he'd love to come back here even if he took a small pay cut (provided Macarthur weren't an option) but I just don't think Welnix want to spend anywhere near his level of wages.

and without a kiwi connection we also signed ugarkovic.
After having him in the team do you really think he is top class?

I see your point with Kosta but how good for us was he that second stint...? I maybe don't remember it that well but it was pretty mixed, no?
He wasn't great for us but we recruited him as a top player in the league that time.

Hooper is another top signing under Welnix. A bit old and injury ridden sure, but would've been expensive regardless.

yeah that was my point - cheaper since he was older and wasn't already in the ALeague

Correct about Kosta, he was a top player. In that regard, it was a signing that was away from the norm for Welnix.

I also remember Gui Finkler being a decent ALeague signing but he was probably past his best too by the time we signed him?

When he joined his reputation was one of the top midfielders in the league, the fact that he didn't live up to that doesn't mean he wasn't thought of as a top player when he joined.

I agree that the season when Finkler, Hernandez and Kosta all moved (briefly) from Victory to Phoenix was a strange and disappointing one. None of them excelled.

They'd better not sign for the WRONG Dons, like Tommy Smith

I htought Wallace might of got a go with the team based on his WC performances. Certainly one of the more attacking NZ players currently.

Have heard he is a bit of a douche which may of not helped him.

He was happy in Wellington until we had a big earthquake & it caused a tsunami warning. His family were living besides the sea & it spooked them. I can't recall anyone ever saying he thought he was too good for us.

Two ex-Nixers on the board in the same game. Marco Rojas with an unlikely headed brace to open his account for the Roar (vs former club Victory), while Roly Bonevacia makes his debut and scores a late goal, 3-2 to Brisbane the final score.

Did not realise how much Europeans hated earthquakes until after that quake. My French flatmate left our apartment and went and slept in his van for two nights in the botanical gardens after that one.

If you've never experienced it before it can be pretty scary. That's kind of why Aucklanders react like they do when there's a small earthquake that a Wellingtonian would be pretty blase about.

Tbf, if there's even an earthquake even a small one in AKL, it might mean that Rangitoto 2.0 is about to rise out of the Waitematā and wreck the whole city

Minor tremors are common in all locations in New Zealand.  How they are felt has as much to do with the building (or location) you are in as with soil structure and tectonics.
Having lived through all significant events in Christchurch (Sept 2010, Feb 2011, June 2011 and Dec 2011) I am far more confident of surviving one here in Christchurch than in any other city in New Zealand thanks to rebuilds compliant with new requirements for foundations post 2011 here.
Wellington suffered in the 2016 Kaikoura quake whereas nothing was damaged in Christchurch, despite the distance from Kaikoura being the same. Part (perhaps a small part) of the reason is the quality of new building foundations in CHCH post-2011.

I'll never forget the first quake I experienced in NZ. It was terrifying. In Rome, in the preceding 21 years I could only remember one, maybe two 2 magnitude 3ish quakes. That one was a good 5 or so and I couldn't go back to sleep afterwards!

Most of the energy of Kaikora earthquake was released north of the epicenter in the cook straight and much closer to Wellington, but you're right that the best place in the world to be in an earthquake is a city engineered to withstand an earthquake.

Just for a minor reference:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Kaik%C5%8Dura_earthquake#:~:text=The%20epicentre%20(the%20point%20on,200%20km%20(120%20mi).

"A complex sequence of ruptures with a combined magnitude of 7.8 started at 00:02:56 NZDT on 14 November 2016 and lasted approximately two minutes.[1] The hypocentre (the point where the ruptures started) was at a depth of 15 kilometres (9.3 miles). The epicentre (the point on the Earth's surface above the hypocentre) was 15 kilometres (9 mi) north-east of Culverden and 95 km (59 mi) from Christchurch.[3][15][16] From the hypocentre associated with the Humps Fault,[17][18] ruptures ripped northwards at a speed of 2 km per second, over a distance of up to 200 km (120 mi). The largest amount of energy released did not occur at the epicentre, rather 100 km (62 mi) to the north near Seddon.[19] Initial field surveys indicated ruptures on at least six faults,[19][20] while more detailed studies confirmed ruptures on twenty-five faults.[21] This is considered a world record for the greatest number of faults to rupture in a single earthquake event.[22][23] The earthquake was assessed as the 'most complex earthquake ever studied' and prompted the reassessment of a number of assumptions about earthquake processes.[8]"
