This must be a record mention of the word "Community" in a press release, even for WSW, and you thought I was taking the mickey in my above post!

Today the Wanderers launched their inaugural season in true community style with a three phased event in the heart of Parramatta. The event kicked off in Church Street Mall at lunchtime, before moving to Prince Alfred Park where all three of the Wanderers Youth, Women's and A-League squads were presented to fans as a Club for the very first time.

The event then moved to Riverside Theatre where Wanderers Executive Chairman, Lyall Gorman and FFA Chairman, Mr Frank Lowy welcomed and paid tribute to the work done by so many to make this Club a reality on the eve of their first ever A-League match.

"Today we’ve have had a wonderful day meeting fans and the community in Church Street Mall and Prince Alfred Park. It was important to us that we celebrate this event with our community in the public domain and that we indeed always deliver on our promise to be raw and real." Mr Gorman said.

"Tony Popovic, the players and our fantastic Community engagement team have been immersing themselves in the Community and have reached over 100,000 people at 55 events across Western Sydney, which has translated into membership sales and huge interest in the Wanderers.

Since the birth of the Wanderers just four months ago, nearly 3,000 Members have come on board, and we have over 100 School Ambassadors and nearly 70 wonderful volunteers join our respective programs"

The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers FC also announced a five-member independent Board of Directors to guide the club in its inaugural season in the Hyundai A-League. Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman will be joined by four prominent people drawn with a diverse range of business skills. The four new directors are;

Benjamin Chow – a leader of the Australian Chinese community with extensive business, community and political links

Warren Mundine – a high-profile advocate of Indigenous employment with a long career in corporate, community and political affairs

Paul Lederer – a prominent businessman with major manufacturing interests in western Sydney

Elliott Rusanow – a senior corporate finance executive

Mr Gorman said the establishment of the independent Board was another significant step for the Wanderers.

“When FFA made the decision to retain ownership of the Wanderers during the start up phase, the establishment of an independent Board became a top priority,” said Gorman.

“We have carefully assembled a group of Directors with vast experience in business, finance, community and political affairs. I’m humbled to have such high-calibre people make themselves available to serve in these honorary positions for the good of football, western Sydney and the Wanderers.”

The constitution of the Western Sydney Wanderers FC also allows for two member-elected directors to join the Board.

Mr Gorman also announced the development of a new training and administrative facility at Blacktown.

"Our new premises are underway at Blacktown International Sports Park and we are super excited about this move, which will give us strong representation in the West, with a physical presence in Parramatta, Campbelltown through our Westfield Women’s League team, Blacktown and St Marys through our National Youth League team.."

Plenty of tickets remain for tomorrow night's match against the Central Coast Mariners.

NRMA Insurance, major sponsor of the Western Sydney Wanderers FC, is helping to bring football back to Western Sydney with the launch of the NRMA Insurance Ball Amnesty in Toongabbie today.

The NRMA Insurance Ball Amnesty will travel across the Western Sydney community throughout the A-League season, giving football fans the chance to exchange their used ball (size 3 and above) for a brand new NRMA Insurance Wanderers football.

Always heard good things about him, but I never saw it myself. Definitely been on the outer at Roar for the last season or so, will be interesting to see him for the Wanderers.

The only time I can remember seeing him play against the Nix was in Dunedin, and I can only remember that because we came up with an amusing chant that I can't remember. My memory fails.

As per the matchday thread, the RBB have been setting off flares at a W-League game. I've just heard that the punishment for setting off a fire during a total fire ban is 12 months in prison. Idiots.

Important Message To RBB & All WSW Supporters

Myself (Benched), BigDukes, RBBKopite and JohnG met with the Club and FFA on Wednesday afternoon. We were asked to attend due to incidents that have taken place this year, such as the away derby (where several flares were thrown onto the pitch), CCM match (bottle incident) and the recent W-League match (flares and a pitch invasion).

We had a very open and frank discussion which lasted several hours. As of the conclusion of the meeting we have lost everything:

  • Tifos.
  • Oversized flags.
  • Megaphones,
  • Instruments.

These are privileges that we are allowed and we have now lost those privileges. It is up to us to earn back our privileges starting now. Our response and behaviour from this moment must be strong & unified.

True, but there are muppets everywhere (you don't need to look far here!) and on the whole I think they seem to be responding pretty maturely to what are (deserved) reasonably tough measures.  Although how hard it is for them not to rip flares, (especially during a fire ban) not to jump up and down on seats breaking them, and not to throw urine filled bottles onto the ground I don't know.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/football/wanderers-success-story-continues-off-the-pitch/story-fndb5nmd-1226564554705

WESTERN Sydney Wanderers' supporters are dreaming of the finals but the club's incredible debut season is amassing milestones off the pitch, with merchandise having become an endangered species and memberships topping 6500.

Saturday night's 1-0 victory against Melbourne Heart cemented the A-League's newest club into third spot on the ladder.

Just as remarkably, the entire night's allocation of 300 Wanderers shirts was sold before the match had even kicked off at Parramatta Stadium. The shirt sales though were only part of the $90,000 worth of merchandise sold at the stadium on the night.

The club and Nike are desperately trying to get more on to the market, blown away by the demand.

The numbers are staggering for a team which was just an idea less than 12 months ago and launched only seven months ago.

Already the merchandise sales are 300 per cent over budget, even though the season still has nine rounds to go.

Memberships continue to sell at a brisk rate even though there are four home matches left in the season.

The Wanderers' executive chairman Lyall Gorman said the membership figure is "approaching 6600, of which 700 are the Wander-four tickets valid for four games.

"We're still selling season tickets in droves, which is incredible," he said.

He believes the key to their success is not marketing tricks, or the novelty of a new club, but about substance.

"It's not about a one year wonder it's about putting the building blocks in place for a long term future," Gorman said. "This club is built on the fundamental principles of values, vision and culture.

"We built this club on what the fans told us in those seven forums in July last year: What might this club stand for; what does it represent and what should the colours be."

Gorman believes if on-field and off-field success continues at its present rate membership will need to be capped within just a few seasons in a similar fashion to the world's great sporting venues like Old Trafford.

"I think an ideal membership base would be about 75 to 80 per cent of the stadium capacity (21,500)," he said.

"That allows 20 per cent of the crowd to come along and taste the game day experience."

Gorman says the club is about building a culture and not buying players to win the competition in their first year.

However, the Wanderers might do just that as Tony Popovic's men go from strength to strength.

How about FFA letting their supporters get away flare after flare after flare? Not much to love about that when fans of other clubs were (rightly) getting 5 year bans for exactly the same thing.

Yeah, I'm surprised more hasn't been made of this. They do it at every game, more than once, and no reprimand or even any mention of it.

To be fair, the FFA have finally cracked down on it. They banned literally everything, tifo's, banners etc. It got too far out of hand to be able to control, so they had no choice but to ban everything until the RBB proved they can be trusted again.

UNPARALLELED support and demand for tickets to Western Sydney Wanderers games has prompted FFA boss David Gallop to petition the state government to build a new stadium for the A-League leaders.

RT this: RBB boycott of food & drink @ Parra Stadium for D3. TIFO deemed high risk, and banned. We refuse to fill their pockets. #rbb
They got denied their Tifo for the derby, so that is their response.

I thought they were banned for the rest of the season?

http://www.westsydneyfootball.com/_/supporter-articles/rbb-tifo-banned-supporter-boycott-of-stadium-food-drink-r351

This bit:

Opinion: The timing of the withdrawal is a clear attempt by Football Federation Australia & Hatamoto to discourage and punish the RBB for the silent protest at the Wellington Phoenix match, and for our perceived 'role' in the incident of supporter violence at the recent Melbourne Heart away match. The only other explanation would be that with the Sydney FC banner debacle of their Melbourne Victory match, that the FFA do not want to appear to favour the RBB and have thus extended the tifo ban from Sydney FC to the RBB as well. Neither sit well with myself, as both are punishments for the actions of other groups.

Parramatta Stadium has a sheer and total lack of respect for the Western Sydney Wanderers, who will be the major tenants of the stadium for the foreseeable future. In recent weeks the stadium has re-painted the changing rooms to the Blue & Yellow of the Parramatta Eels, have allowed the playing of multiple games of junior Rugby League matches that have completely wrecked the pitch, and this attempt to reduce the spectacle of a top tier fixture in the A-League when the Eels were embarrassed by pulling a smaller crowd for their first home game of the season in comparison to the Wanderers crowd against Wellington. Lyall Gorman must respond to the lack of respect that Parramatta Stadium has shown the team, to show that the Wanderers cannot be taken for granted.

Wow, just wow.

Hey RBB.... the A League and all sport in Australia did not start 8 Months ago!

I really wonder how things will go for them when they have a downturn in form and a poor run of results and people start falling off the Bandwagon. To me the RBB see a bunch of self righteous pricks with an unbelievable sense of entitlement. Mind you not really surprising when you consider their Sugar Daddy (FFA) has given their club everything they want, on a platter.
