The Schools Nationals are this coming week, and I was wondering how the defending champions Nelson are looking? Can they repeat?

I see the top two Auckland schools and them are in the one side of the draw ( how did this happen with seeding), so one of them will be out early

16 teams in the top draw, so four pools of four. Top 8 go through to the quarterfinals, and I think the bottom eight then join with the top eight from the bottom 16.

I can't work out why the girls format has all 32 teams eligible to contest the national title but the boys has just 16.

Just one of many zany things about high school football.

Sacred Heart top group A and play Napier Boys in quarters. Saint Kentigern top Group B and play New Plymouth.

Saint Kents drew with Nelson to relegate them to the minor playoffs, and their coach is having a moan in the local press about extra time.

Group C and D to be decided still

Just a side note, there isn't a "Div 1". You're either at the Lotto Premier or you are at any of the "satellite" tournaments. None of them is officially the "second tier". For a lot of years the Jim Wishart was the "major" "satellite" tournament but that hasn't been the case for quite a while. Schools go to whichever tournament they choose to go to if they don't qualify for the Premier tourney.

Quite right Smithy, should have used Premiers.

Marlborough and Cashmere now 4 from 4.

Burnside, Nelson, Lincoln, Middleton Grange, Marlborough and Cashmere all in Bowl play-offs.

And even if you're one of the 32 at the Lotto Premier boys tournament, if you're not in the so-called 'top 16' you can't win the damn thing. Ludicrous.

Remember that first tournament in Christchurch. Hornby High hadn't lost a game in 3 years. Then lost the semi to Linwood who went onto win it .

Wellington College - love the place but they ruined my football career. I arrived year 11, so the middle of high school. I went from a select few in my club's academy to not even making WC's JPL team. The trial was probables vs possibles and I was new to the school was placed in the possibles team. Well if you're an attacking player on a team that's severely outclassed then you don't have much hope looking good in a one off trial. Unfortunately at that age I was too naive to just return to the club.

After that, probably due the fact I wasn't overly loud and brash, didn't really have a sporting family to tap on anyone's shoulder, and my last name wasn't also the last name of the guy that owned the Phoenix at the time, I fell into obscurity. Player of the year and golden boot for various teams followed but there was absolutely no care in the world beyond the school's special few.

In my final year of college after being snubbed for the first team after a very successful previous year I threw it all in and played social. I did the same for a few years of University. After finally returning to football I through some friends at Uni I became an occasional central league starter. After more than a few years break playing completely social football and without any decent coaching for the whole of my teens I don't think that's a bad achievement.

What could've been if from year 11 to the first few years of university if I was less naive? Who knows...

/rant

Anyhow... the point of that was to say if I did it all again I wouldn't give a damn about the school. If you're at a place that appreciates you then stick with it. School's footballing systems - like most things in life - are just another case of who you know not what you know. At least with a club you've had half your life developing those relationships.

I suppose that is less about "elite" players and more about the players one tier down. (And typically the school doesn't really care about them....) But there's some 2 cents for the evening.

Boys Youth Finals tonight at Petone, Memorial.

Division 1 Final @ 5.15pm

Rongotai v St Pats (Silverstream)

Premier Final @ 7.30pm

HIBS v St.Pats (Wellington)

HIBS going for a third consecutive title. HIBS don't have any standout stars & maybe slight underdogs but they are very good at getting the job done when it matters.

Not sure when St Pats were last in the final/winners & should be a good crowd & atmosphere  - believe some St.Pats Old Boys flying up from Christchurch for the night.

My Pick:

Rongotai 2-0

St.Pats (Wellington) 2-1

Not to far off..

Rongotai won 1-0

Fairly even game, I thought St.Pats slightly better but a good free kick for Rongotai late on won it.

St Pats won 2-1

Fully deserved for St. Pats with 2 quick goals just after half time before a very late HIBS goal set up a hectic finish. St. Pats much the better team in terms of technique, passing etc. HIBS game plan seemed to be long ball or long throw into the 50/50 mixer.

In what I hope will be an opportunity for a great leap forwards in the College game, former Miramar Rangers first teamer and all-round good guy Mike Woodside is the new General Manager of College Sport Wellington.

Awesome to have a football guy in the hot seat and hope he can make some of the changes that are needed.

Just to demonstrate how little I know about real life, Woody is actually the new GM of SPORT WELLINGTON. Not College Sport Wellington.

So of no relevance to this thread whatsoever.

Carry on.

College Sport Wellington Premier 1 Final will be held on Wednesday, 7:30pm kickoff at Petone Memorial.

St Patrick's College Silverstream vs Hutt International Boys' School

Stream have beaten HIBS both times the two teams have faced during the season. However, HIBS will be playing in their fourth consecutive final, and have a habit of getting the job done when they need to.

Will be a very interesting and emotionally charged game against two schools just down the road from each other.

Players to watch for Stream will be full-back William Kempt, goalkeeper Connor Maxwell, forward Benjamin Taylor, and attacking midfielder Tommi-Joe McIndoe, the latter of whom is a former Phoenix academy player.

For HIBS, defensive midfielder Nicholas McFadyen, forward Cole Kennedy, centre back Jack Wylie, and recent Phoenix first team debutant - forward Ben Waine.

If I had to give a prediction, after watching HIBS really come into their own and dismantle Wellington College in a must-win game on Saturday, I'd have to say HIBS will take it, and win their 3rd title in 4 years.

Score Prediction: 3-1 HIBS

My prediction wasn't too far off. HIBS won 2-0.

Stream utterly outclassed. Could have been 6 or 7-0 if not for their goalkeeper keeping them in the game.

I think Stream managed one shot on goal - which slowly rolled along the ground towards the keeper.

Ben Waine is perhaps the most talented Kiwi schoolboy footballer I have ever seen. Awe-inspiring passer, spectacular dribbler, pacey and just simply has that x-factor to his game that can't be taught.

College football is really on the improve. Have been along to a couple of game over the past 2 weeks and the talent and quality of football is very good.

Watched Scots College play Wairarapa College this morning. Scots were excellent. Play a really good style..They look very well organised and coached.
