Note the Dom attempting to spread doom and gllom about the AWs games as well this morning. It's not just "we hate the Nix" it's "we hate NZ football".

I'd have almost no doubt that is a story that comes from NZF. Classic PR move to encourage people to buy tickets. Basically it's just a reminder to people that the match is on

You think? I would think it would be absolutely the opposite effect: "oh, look at that, football isn't fashionable any more, won't bother going". Whereas "HOLY CRAP TICKETS ARE SELLING FASTER THAN FAST GET YOURS NOW!!!" would be the way to attract custom.

Creating the illusion of scarcity can a) stop people from buying last minute tickets under the expectation that "it's probably sold out, they were going quickly two weeks ago" and b) be an even worse look when there's tonne of empty seats. While you're right in that too much negativity can reduce demand, the inverse can be the same too.

whether there was a plan or not in making those comments, whether it was an NZF initiaitive or media inquiry driven, Glading should not have said "disappointly low". Say how many sold, say expecting to pick up as players arrive, say expecting good crowds, but dont say sales have been "disappointingly low". That will not help sell tickets. He can be disappointed after the event, but not 10 days before.

Still, a while to go yet and lots of media to come hopefully. and although welly on a tuesday it has the advantage of coverage of the first game selling the second.

True, but I have looked and looked through the paper this morning and can see no mention of the crowd gigures at last nights Lions Match, which looked about as popular as a gold coast game at skilled park, especially after on Saturday the paper actually reported that the Phoenix game was played in front of a "disappointing crowd of 7212"

Crowd of 3200 odd as the commentator was praising those that turned up due to the poor weather.

I don't see them mentioning nzfc crowd figures either. So what?

Stupid conspiracy you're going with here.

Super 14 crowds will be bigger.

Wasn't only the commentator, the article on 3 news was much to the same effect. did mention the crowd number, from memory, kinda sounded like it praised the hearty souls that turned up. tried to find the video but couldn't. but...

The Rugby Union controls all the media man

More importantly, how come Gold Coast United have named their stadium after David Tua's wife??

Tax bills unpaid to finance Smeltz's transfer/wages, anyone????. You know it all adds up.

Take a back seat Pakistani cricketers, this could be huge!

Back to the main thread topic ...
I was so grumpy about lack of coverage in this morning's Dom Post, that I have just cancelled my subscription.

I find it hard to comprehend that an international match involving NZ and a top ranked team of the world's biggest sport played at the scene of (and as a follow up to) arguably NZ's most memorable sporting spectacle of the past 20 years did not even make a mention on either the front page or the back page. Not even a reference to the picture-less article in the middle of the sports section.

I'm sure the All Blacks upcoming friendly matches with countries that have never beaten them (Ireland, Scotland) or not in the last 50 years (Wales) won't be treated with such contempt.

I've voted with my wallet. Who else?

At the end of the day it is the only language they understand is money...

The coverage in Australia of the Socceroos has also been piss poor by the mainstream media ....

We both share a common problem in that those in power in the media only ever take football seriously aside from the WC if we are playing a very powerful country and then a local game between East & Saint's two side from Sydney's South East would get more ...

Can feel your pain and anger ... but then my guess is RU does not have a Yellow Fever run by fans ...

Please e-mail them to tell them. If they don't know why you've cancelled its just an (even more) empty gesture.

Hello, in the Herald was a picture of our Siggy in aerial mode and they did mention that as the game finished too late...It was too late to put into their edition.

Cheers

Yes, certainly did that.

Email as follows (sent last night)
"I have been a subscriber to the Dom Post for a number of years however would like to cancel my subscription at the earliest convenience.

The tipping point was the inexcusable lack of coverage for the All Whites game in Wellington. On the morning of the day of this significant international fixture, there was absolutely no coverage by the Dom Post on either its front page nor back page (a picture-less article appeared in the middle of the sports section, but it was not referred to from the outside pages). After the massive boost that football gave this city (and vice versa - the relationship is symbiotic), this oversight was unforgivable. One could even be excused for thinking that this snubbing of football to be deliberate, particularly in the light of the particularly negative slant that has emanated from the paper on football related matters over recent times.

My subscription account number is etc etc.

I suspect I will not be the only person taking this action.

Regards"

Response as follows (received today)
"I'm sorry about your dissapointment with our coverage.

As for your subscription, [last day of delivery].

We're sorry to lose you

Regards etc"

I think I laid it out fairly clearly (and fairly).

Hi, just to let you know that I tweeted in my Twitter page to @Dompost and mentioned that they have annoyed some Yellow Fever posters to the point that we have cancelled our subcriptions..I also stated that their automated replies Sucked! and I hoped that now they were happy.

I will admit that since Fred's untimely departure and Sam Worthington's succession to his position-I did not take to his articles..esp when he called the Nix boys-The Wellington Phoenix schizophrenic football team-That kind of comparison was so off base..One is a sensitive medical affliction that many suffer and Sam put me right off.

I watched Ricki's post-match interview after the Paraguay game and if it was Fred from Dompost interviewing him, I heard Ricki say..Well Fred your on the board-Is it the NZFA? If anyone can clarify for me..it would be most appreciated.

Can one post images in here? I have some from the game against Paraguay...there's one that depicts our Siggy2010 looking quite dejected and other images too.

I am offside with a poster in here who does not like me farewelling you all with Cheers...so I will bid you all instead with this Maori saying..Hei kona ra (Stay well).

Hi, thanks for the clarification, that it was Fred de Jong who is on the board of NZFA.

Am I becoming paranoid?

But, surely they could have done a little better than "Wellington Phoenix's run goes on with dull draw"?

Dull? 4 goals, a penalty, ebbs and flows (both teams had the lead and were in charge at various points), tension to the final whistle, and even some interesting tactical changes for the aficionado.

There were mistakes out there, sure, and it wasn't always pretty, but dull is such a blaah word.

Oh, I don't know!

I probably wouldn't have mentioned it if you hadn't, but I also thought their choice of headline was a little harsh.

I'll see your non-paranoia and raise it -not only was the headline strangely negative

but i wonder if it signals a rift between dompost and Nix for some reason

it really did seem a very strange headline

Never been one for conspiracy theories but there's always a first time;

Wellington Lions average crowd down 50% on last season - no story in Doom Post.

Wellington Lions last crowd 2,662 - I suspect this was their lowest ever - no story in Doom Post.

Wellington rugby lost $300k last season - how will the finances be this year after a halving of the crowd - remembering kids have also been free all season. No story in Doom Post (but plenty on Terry's financial situation and constant reminders the Nix lose money).

RWC 2nd round of ticket sales closed last weekend - no story on how it went in Doom Post. A bit of public interest in this as tax payers are underwriting 2/3rds of the RWC loss and rate and tax payers shelling out millions for stadiums, infrastructure etc. Still doesn't rate a story.

Conspiracy theory - Wellington rugby in the sh*t so better try and knock off their competition (for limelight, crowds & sponsors dollars) to preserve our advertising dollars. Teach those soccer bastards who use twitter and face book and don't read our paper.

Off to make tin foil hat.

Two boys are playing in a park in Wellington when one of them is attacked by a rottweiler. Thinking quickly, his friend rips a plank of wood from a fence, forces it into the dog's collar and twists it, breaking the dog's neck. All the while, a Dominoion Post reporter who was throwing a possum in the park is watching. He rushes over, introduces himself and takes out his pad and pencil to start his story for the next edition.
He writes, "Hurricanes fan saves friend from vicious animal."
The boy interrupts: "But I'm not a Hurricanes fan."
The reporter starts again: "Firebirds fan saves friend from horrific attack."
The boy interrupts again: "I'm not a cricket fan either."
The reporter asks: "Who do you support, then?" "The Nix," replies the boy.
So the reporter starts again: "Phoenix git kills family pet"
