The Metro article was very good I thought, well worth a buy.

Now available online.  Very interesting and I think lays it out pretty clearly.  Whether you think that behaviour is appropriate is up to you, but I think it's pretty clear what his MO is.  My view is that he's a dinosaur and I don't agree with these methods

Sad really, he is total football, obsessed with it. So much passion but an inability to control himself in the heat of the moment. I've never seen his black side but the few times I've had contact with him he has been a pleasure and a genuine nice guy. Would be sorry to see him lost but what can you do????

Acceptance is the first thing. And he hasn't got there yet.

It's too easy to just write it off to passion isn't it? that might be OK if it is a one off kind of thing, but a protracted continuance of the same poor behaviour doesn't show any acceptance by him that what he does is wrong or inappropriate.

An interesting article that is quite fair IMO. Fallon comes across as an enigma, but also as a frustrated bully. Some of his sideline antics are repellent in the extreme...

Had it not been for Kevin Fallon, we would not have made the 82 finals.

That does not give him a free pass for the rest of his career though

I'm not defending him, just making a point.

An irrelevant one.

I think you nailed it Ray. A frustrated bully. He talks to players from the sideline, with banter that is said between players on the pitch that no one else hears. You have to wonder if because his playing career was cut short, that there is that part missing for him. Robbed of that chance to see and do it all and get it all out of his system. Like the college football pro that burns out and rails his kid hard to be better than him.

I agree that he no longer has a place in the game. The mens teams wont touch him and I could see more than a few that would have no issue laying him out if he wound up. While I agree with his MO and what he is trying to achieve especially around standards and 'professionalism', his execution is completely and utterly wrong. For that reason alone, he cannot be exposed to kids. If he learned to filter or have a filter than fine but its clear he does not and wont change.

As much as I am not a Declan fan, Declan has learned to coach kids in a largely positive manner and you can argue in the current tense, is getting better results.

I missed it but do remember Ken turning up every now and then and quietly watching SO in defiance of the ban. Was a pretty lonely figure back then. Not sure how his road of redemption went or what/where he is now.

It went OK for someone who was banned for life. I seem to remember he tried to make a comeback in New Plymouth, but wasn't allowed to. However he then became the All Whites coach for a period - late 90's? Pretty much foregiven by then.

He's really been a good example of a player resurrecting himself from total disgrace (life ban for head-butting a ref) to become one of the top coaches in his country.

All Whites assistant coach 1994-98

All Whites manager 1998 - 2002 including very creditable performances at the 1999 Confederations Cup, Mexico (2-0 vs. Germany, 2-1 vs. USA, 2-0 vs. Brazil)

Left the All Whites to briefly coach Norwegian second division club Vesteralen.

Returned for a brief stint as manager of Football Kingz 2002-3 replacing Kevin Fallon.

Then returned to Norway to coach Vollen.

Still coaching in Norway I think.
