Mossy on Kosta

Moss knows Kosta dangers
Thursday, 23 December 2010
by Vince Rugari, Sportal

Glen Moss
Gold Coast United gloveman Glen Moss says he is not the least bit surprised by the sudden rise of fellow Kiwi and Brisbane sharpshooter Kosta Barbarouses.

Barbarouses has been a revelation since moving across the ditch from his hometown club Wellington Phoenix, headhunted by Brisbane supremo Ange Postecoglou as a perfect fit for his plans of Hyundai A-League domination.

Few expected the 20-year-old to deliver such potency in an orange shirt, which has guided him to the top of the Roar's goalscoring charts and second in the league with nine goals his breakout year - but Moss, a former teammate at the Phoenix and the New Zealand national team and the man who will be tasked with limiting his influence on Boxing Day, was well aware.

"I can honestly say that's no surprise to me," he said. "I've known Kosta for a couple of years and it was only a matter of time before he broke the shackles and now he's banging in goals for fun. I'm pleased to see the kid doing well but hopefully he doesn't do that well Sunday."

United will go into the Boxing Day derby with the slight disappointment of the abandoned fixture against Central Coast drowned out by the anticipation and excitement of a derby day that, according to Moss, the side has always kept one eye on throughout the season.

"Everyone was looking forward to (the Mariners game) so much and it sounded so good and a real offer to the fans to get things kick-started for us, but the pitch hasn't been good for weeks so it didn't really surprise any of the players when it flooded," he said.

"But Boxing Day is another one that we've been looking forward to in the back of our minds for a little while. Playing against the Roar always has a little bit extra in it and I thought we were probably the better team earlier in the season when we played and we were unlucky not to win.

Brisbane hold a Hyundai A-League record undefeated streak of 17 matches - but none of those were against their cross-town rivals with that 0-0 stalemate at Skilled Park to open the season the last time the two sides met.

A lot has changed since then - for instance, Gold Coast still had Shane Smeltz and were considered the top side in Queensland - but Moss is confident United can find a way to ensure the Roar remain winless against Miron Bleibergs men.

"They've got a big streak going and they're one of the best attacking sides in the league, but we've got the best defence in the league and hopefully we can be the ones to end that on Sunday."

"I can't pick any obvious chinks in their armour I don't think anyone really has this season. It'll be one of those games where it's two good teams and we know we're going to have to be up for it and really concentrate for the whole game because it could come down to one moment."

Mossy looking forward to "God"

MOSS: Bring on Perth and 'God'
Glen Moss   | December 31st, 2010

MY boots are still drying out after one of the wettest games I've played in.

It was great to see, although it didn't stop a fantastic turnout from The Beach and other Gold Coast United supporters.

It was exactly what football derbies are about -- two sides that really don't like each other battling it out in the pouring rain.

Tough conditions for players but a recipe for entertaining football.

Playing your local rival really is one of the best things as a player -- I'm already looking forward to the next one.

I'd be lying if I said the boys weren't a little disappointed not to bring three points back down the M1.

After leading twice, I thought we could hang on for the win but a soft penalty decision put an end to that.

I thought referee Chris Beath had a great game apart from that decision -- it's difficult for them in conditions like that as well.

I suppose when you're leading the competition and playing at home, you get penalty decisions and that little bit of luck.

On Monday night, we welcome "God", oh, and Perth Glory.

As a keeper, I love a challenge and I've been fortunate to play some of the best players in the world with the Kiwi team.

So I can't wait to come up against Robbie Fowler, or "God" as he is known to Liverpool fans.

If Fowler is "God", then Dino Djulbic is our devil.

Dino was man of the match at Suncorp Stadium and will be up for the challenge of Fowler.

It's a great opportunity for football lovers on the Coast to watch one of the greatest strikers the game has seen.

Every game is a must-win on our path to the finals and we need your support.

Grab a ticket, check out Fowler and cheer on United!

signed one year contract extension at GCU

Moss pens contract extension
Wednesday, 9 March 2011

United Goalkeeper Glen Moss
 goldcoastunited.com.au

GOAKEEPER Glen Moss has this week put pen to paper on a one-year extension to his contract as Gold Coast United begin the process of compiling their squad for the 2011/12 Hyundai A-League season.

The New Zealand international kept 12 clean sheets in 30 appearances during the 2010/11 campaign and displayed what many observers believed to be career-best form.

Born in New Zealand but raised on the Gold Coast, Moss transferred from Melbourne Victory to his hometown club just two weeks before the start of the season, replacing Jess Vanstrattan who moved to the Central Coast Mariners.

Soon after making the move from Melbourne, Moss became a key component of one the competitions meanest defences, making a string of outstanding saves that punctuated what was a highly successful season for the 28-year-old custodian.

Ive had a great year and loved every minute of it, so I was very happy to sign an extension, Moss said.

Both Miron and goalkeeper coach Scott Higgins managed to get the best out of me and have worked hard on my game all year, which has improved me a lot.

By showing faith in me and bringing me to the Gold Coast, Miron gave me a lot of confidence which helped me to perform to the best of my ability its been a great homecoming.

With one of the best defences in the league in front of me it helped to make my first season here a very enjoyable one. Next year we will see a number of our young players step up to the senior team and Im looking forward to that.

Weve had the best youth team in the country for two seasons now and were all looking forward to seeing those players develop and assisting them to do just that as much as we can, he said.

Sounds like a deal at Sheffield is looking pretty likely.

Gold Coasts Kiwi international Keeper Glen Moss is also looking to move on, with the club agreeing him to allow him to trial with English Championship side Sheffield United, even though he has a year of his contract to run.

Glen has a clause in his deal with us which allows him to do that, so we could not stand in his way, said coach Miron Bleiberg.

Moss agent Lou Sticca said: The club is looking at bringing in new players after a poor season and Glen has attracted their attention after a great year in the A-League. Hes been really impressed by the facilities there and well see what transpires.

Seems to be doing well in his trial

With Dino Djulbic, Bas van den Brink and Steve Pantelidis all now in Asia, Zenon Caravella signed with Adelaide and goalkeeper Glen Moss impressing during on-going trials with Sheffield United, Gold Coast has been reduced to a skeleton club looking ahead to 2011-2012.
