Is a trend Old scores, Morecambe win.

Grabs first goal as Shrimps win 2-0 at Walsall.

Is hope of survival yet.

Full game in a 2-1 loss at Cheltenham (7th).

Morecambe remain 2nd last.

Two big home games in next 10 days against Mansfield and Macclesfield.

Two teams just directly above Shrimps on the table.

All about the letter M.

In a veritable 6 point game, 1 point each is the result as Morecambe (goal 86 mins) draw 1-1 with relegation rivals Mansfield.

Full game Old.

Another big match on Tuesday when Shrimps host Maccesfield. Win that and they will edge ahead of their opponents, out of the relegation zone.

Morecambe do have easily the worst GD in the league (-25), so that may cost them come the final day of the season.

In a very big result for Morecambe they beat Macclesfield 2-0, in another classic effective 6 point relegation scrap.

Shrimps go ahead of their opponents by 1 point, and to third last.

Means they are for the moment out of the drop zone (only bottom 2 go down), for first time since almost season start!

Full game for Old.

Cause the competition are better, see the various Reid, Smith, Boxall etc who have played there in the last few years.

Hasn't featured for the AWs since around 2009 - something tells me that narrowly avoiding relegation out of League 2 isn't necessarily the required standard these days.

Good on him for carving a career in Europe - big fan, but he's not AWs material in my opinion.

Thanks Andrew. Soccerway need to update their tables.

From Wiki.

As a result of the knock-on effects of Bury F.C.'s expulsion from League One, the second bottom team is reprieved for numerical reasons.[39]

So even better news for Old & Morecambe. They are now 8 points clear of Stevenage in last place.

Seems a good bloke, but doubt he's even close to the AWs. As above plenty of experienced CBs playing at a much higher level.

Same probably also now for Themi, who seemed to really enjoy his late career taste of international football.

You might as well bring in the youth as your backup CBs, like Pjinaker as they are the future.

These are tough leagues and quite mechanical. You simply do not survive in these environments without a decent level of ability and the know how to apply it consistently.

It's not so much about dismissing his ability, but more to the fact that at any point since 2009, there have been 5 or 6 better options at CB for the All Whites, so it's not exactly shocking that he hasn't been called up since then.

what about when TAHW/Luke Adams/Brotherton were getting called up to the OFC Nations Cup by Hudson?

Younger and cheaper to take to the Islands.

Besides, we could've had Nelsen and Siggy playing at CB - we would have still sucked!

From this week's Flying Kiwis, some happier news.

"Down the divisions, there aren’t too many kiwis out there at the moment. Steven Old’s Morecambe were in a relegation battle most of the EFL League Two season but they did enough to finish third to bottom after the shakeout. The league was abandoned and the table decided on a points per game basis. Only one team was relegated instead of two as well so Morecambe were fine."

From this week's Flying Kiwis. To Unattached FC for interim.

"Steve Old

@Steve0ld

Thanks to all the fans, players & staff @ShrimpsOfficial for the last 3 seasons. It was a hard decision to decline a guaranteed contract with Morecambe, but it's time to move back up north of the border, and play closer to home. #shrimps4ever

Alrighty then. Old had been offered a new single-year deal to remain at the club he’s spent the last three seasons with, keeping them in the football league each time despite some frisky relegation battles, but ultimately he chose to decline that offer for family reasons. Wants to move back to Scotland where he played earlier in his career and be closer to the rellies and all that. Which in turn was the major reason why he moved to England from Sweden three years back too. Fair priorities, dude’s 34 years old with a young family, gotta do what you gotta do. Old played 128 times for Morecambe in all competitions, scoring 10 goals.

Now we just need to hope that Tommy Smith lands on his feet, Nik Tzanev comes back from his loan and snaps up the starting gig for AFC Wimbledon, or someone else pops up from out of the woods because otherwise there’ll be no regular kiwi presence in the EFL next season. Championship, League One, or League Two. Plenty of time left for that to change though."

Wow fifth tier of Scottish football. Must be close to home. I guess he's had a good career and it's probably time to concentrate on other things, like family, maybe coaching or further education

George Stanger had a short loan spell at the same club.

All good prep for taking on Belgium.

Lol, you'd have to take this move as being the end of his serious playing career.  Enjoy retirement Steven.

Concussion an issue across all the football codes. Geoff Old is Steven's dad. Steven was born in Palmy North.

Not sure where Geoff Old lives these days, but about 20 years ago when I was living in the UK he was coach of the Dutch national rugby team!

I seem to recall he lives in the US now but may be back in NZ for now. He was definitely here a few weeks ago as he met up with a mate of mine.
