From Flying Kiwis, with some match highlights.
https://youtu.be/lERGcZpd-6s

Big Stef has experienced more rewarding games of footy than this one, that’s for sure. Hapoel Tel Aviv were away to Hapoel Be’er Sheva, who are third on the ladder, one of the three teams in this season’s title race... and they got smoked in a 6-0 defeat.

Marinovic almost raked the first goal off the line with a launching one-hander but no success there. That was in the seventh minute. In the 19th it was 2-0 as the HTA defence got sloppy as an advantage was played for a foul, allowing the ball to be nudged in behind to an onside forward with Stef beaten as he desperately rushed out. Make it 3-0 after 28 mins following a slick move and an even slicker finish into the top near corner. Pretty much all over already.

Except it got worse with two more concessions in the first ten minutes of the second half. Easy finish after a flick-on header for one, then a screamer from distance for the other. That fourth goal was scored by a half-time substitute by the name of Tomer Hemed. Remember him? Former Phoenix teammates running into each other in Israel. Hemed then scored again with quarter of an hour remaining, timing his movement perfectly to dodge the offside flag and nudge in from close range. Not the happiest Welly Nix reunion for the kiwi gloveman.

Hapoel Tel Aviv have signed Lithuanian international goalkeeper Džiugas Bartkus, which means it’s probably the end of the road for Marinovic in Hapoel Tel Aviv… what’s next for the big man?

League Two. That's where Kiwi keepers are clustering.
And if the AWs no 1 or 2 keeper, is upsurped by someone from Lithuania, League Two is probably where he should be.

He did have a short unhappy stint with Bristol City in The Championship a few years back.

33 yr old Bartkus (didn't play against AWs in 2019) I see has been playing in Israel for 4-5 seasons already, so yes Big Stef will have a fight on his hands to retain his starting spot.

Hapoel Tel Aviv (11th) travel to Hapoel Jersualem (4th).
Ignoring the politics, is an awesome city to visit Jersualem.

A 0-0 draw and Bartkus straight in as starting keeper for Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Marinovic not even in the match day squad.

So perhaps he already has a new home.
A 3rd Ligat Ha'al club? German lower leagues? League Two in the UK?

Tel Aviv derby as Hapoel (11th) host Maccabi (2nd). Be interesting to see if Marinovic is at least on the bench for this one. If not can only presume he is on his way out of Hapoel

Right you are. Now with Unattached FC.

https://time.news/hapoel-tel-aviv-in-negotiations-with-a-montenegrin-striker/

Alexander Buleevich, the attacking player who is linked to Hapoel Haifa, may come to Hapoel Tel Aviv. Haim Silves’ team wants to strengthen the attack and is in negotiations with the player who rarely plays in the Belgian league.

Boljevic may join the team, which recently released Abu Dusso and Stefan Marinovic, and strengthen the attack alongside Alan Ozbolt and Hisham Laios.

Edit - and the new Lithuanian keeper had another clean sheet, as HTA got consecutive 0-0 draws.

i hope not, I dont know how the israeli league compares to aleague but I'd take Paulsen over Marinovic at this stage. Better to have a decent rising star than a almost past it retiree in goal.

I would never call Stefan a dodgy keeper, sail definitely this year and last and flappy as fudge.

The bottom line is if any club has been scouting him this season sail ain’t going anywhere

Sail unseated Marinovic at the Nix. Sail's form for the Nix last year was mostly very good. All the rumours seemed to suggest a move north. But after that cockup with Payne for AWs against Peru in Barcelona, all the possible transfers came to nought.

He started this season pretty average for the Nix. No real clangers, just looking uncertain sometimes, and too passive. But in the Sydney game seemed to rediscover his mojo & a bit of an aggressive mindset. It wouldn't surprise to see overseas clubs relooking at him now, especially as this time he would leave the Nix on a free.

But where to for Big Stef? German or UK lower leagues? Or I guess any lower league on the continent that suddenly needs a keeper.

He really hasn't settled anywhere more than about a season (or less) since he left Vancouver in the MLS. Hopefully he can find a new home soon.

If he's cheap, cool. Get him and Paulsen going head to head, week in and out. Rather have another Kiwi in the team than some rando Aussie with no connection to the team. Plus maybe he has an eye on coaching in the next few years, too

I suspect Marinovic will be looking to stay in Europe, preferably lower league Germany.

Stef went on record on the Football Fix as being open to coming back to the Nix if they want him, but that he's also aware there's other dominoes that need to fall (like where Uffie ends up) before they're likely to sign anyone.

Of course he is open to coming to the NIX - he's a footballer without a club and not a star player who can pick and choose his next options.

We will be able to get him, and for a lot cheaper than last time probably, and for less coin than we would have been offering Sail, so it makes business sense.

The only question really comes down to the goal keeping coach - is Paulsen good enough to be a number 1 in his eyes, and do we have good enough back ups for him. That for me is the bigger question... what happens if the #1 goes down.

As posted by Khalil Media in another thread this a fascinating, and in many ways tragic doco on the 2013/14 season at Beitar Jerusalem. A club infamous for it's far right, opening racist hardcore Jewish fans, who's then Russian owner undertook a crazy social experiment in 2013 by signing 2 Muslim players from Chechnya.

With what is currently happening in Gaza, and before even that the stark divisions in Israeli society with Benjamin Netanyahu as PM. Netanyahu ('Bibi') is a Beitar supporter.

Thought I'd also stick it in the Marinovic thread. Big Stef last season played for Hapoel Tel Aviv, many of whose fans are Socialists. The 2 clubs hate each other along political lines. All in all I imagine Marinovic is happy to be the fudge out of Israel. Maybe his time there saw him lose some love for football?? Maybe. Certainly a million miles different to peaceful little NZ.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjOIRXG9LMQ

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beitar-Hapoel_rivalry
Rivalry with Hapoel Tel Aviv
Another rivalry with Hapoel Tel Aviv which is a political rivalry, as Hapoel Tel Aviv supporters tend to be socialist, a stark contrast to the more right-wing Beitar supporters

In recant years, both clubs have become far less relevant, with Hapoel entering administration and then being relegated in 2017, and Beitar narrowly avoiding relegation several times. Hapoel has not won any major trophies since 2012, although Beitar have recently ended their major trophy drought winning the State Cup in 2023.

Despite this, the rivalry has remained quite fierce, with fixtures between the two often involving racist provocative chants.

On March 5, 2023, before a match against Beitar, Hapoel's practice facility in South Tel Aviv was burnt down, five suspects were arrested the following day.

On October 2, 2023, following a 3-0 loss at home to Hapoel (which was the club's biggest away win against Beitar), Beitar fans went into the club's dressing room to curse and insult the players for such a humiliating loss.[19] Also, yet another violent incident between both clubs fanbases occurred following the match.[20]
